The one thing that'd make me care about the avatars... clothing options. This is MS right, so it's not totally out of the question for them to make Master Chief clothing, Fable 2 accessories, Gears' Lancers etc available for them is it? That'd set it apart from Miis in a nice way and also make them a little bit awesome.
well the fact that they're going to start doing that with home means theres every chance microsoft with follow... the difference will probably be that where as ps3 games will have clothing as unlockable achievements..microsoft will probably charge you for them.

Gotta say though.. enforcing mii style aviators is a genius move in alienating the hardcore gaming community that is the 360 target sales base. They should of had it as optional... because this is great for 7-15yr olds, but the 360's target audience are the 20+

Does this not feel like Nintendo's Mii rip-off? only a little less cute in a way(which is a good thing btw (: )
Except Nintendo stole the idea of Miis from Wee Mee.

New dashboard = casual shit. It's awful with those pathetic/childish avatars.
Those avatars are optional. You don;t have to use em. And their less childish then the Mii's. They have more form to them, look better, and have a lot more options. They could have gone more cartoony for serious casual audiences, or they could have gone more towards home for core audiences, but instead they went for a stylized mixture of Home avatars and Mii's, leaning more towards casual, which they want to take from Nintendo.

I think its gunna be great, and with unlockable items, it'll stop being so childish with your MJOLNIR armor and your Lancer and your Ninja Guidan head thingy. ANd I really like the new interface, but the biggest thing for me is probably eitehr the new marketplace stuff (their adding more info and content, like screenshots of games, etc) or the avatars, which I will actually enjoy, even if I would have prefered like, a different styles option, so I could choose cartoony avatar, realistic avatar, stylized but matrue avatar, etc. But the thing works more then well enough for me. And I love customizing so I;ll have a blast ^.^

Since nobody's mentioned it yet I thought I'd let everybody know that not only can you use your old themes as a backdrop but new themes will actually be 3D so the new dashboard won't just have an empty grey background.

They're alienating the fanbase my having avatars? I don't see how, like I've said, they probably should have been optional, but even as it is, it's not hard to just ignore them. I don't see anyone selling their 360, or even being particuarly bothered by having it standing there on the dashboard, it's only going to encourage more people who like that type of thing to get a 360.

I don't see how it's really any different than being forced to choose a gamer pic. Remember when the 360 was first launched, and there was nothing but cutsey pictures of animals and what naught to choose from?

I'm 21, and I certainly have no problem with designing a 3D avatar to represent myself, it simply makes things a lot more personal than simply using a static 2D picture. If you feel it's childish to make something that looks sort of cute, then you yourself are probably 7-15 years old.

thing is, a LOT of people dont like the whole avatar thing, and i mean a LOT. i'd definately say more disslike the idea of avatars then those who arnt bothered by them. i mean, pissing off the majority of current owners isnt a great thing to do just so they can tick the "casual market" box with this type of gimmick. and btw, the core selection of gamer pics at launch covered everything from cutesy to games like cod2 and the darkness.

if these are forced onto us to use i wont be particularly happy. cos i simply dont see the point in them.

i mean, mii's on the wii make sense since they have a lot of mini-game based software for them to fit into. the "home" characters also have a purpose on ps3. these avatars however simply come across as something thats being thrown in because it was a polular feature on the wii. the idea of mii's i can respect, the blatant copy...not so much.

Looks like some ugly attempt to combine XBL, Home, and Mii. It better be optional

OK, you have changed my idea. I thought they are cool and especially not being extra cute, the nintendo way; but as you've put it they do seem like imposed. bad thing!

The noisiest crowd isn't necessarily the largest one.

I'd be willing to bet the majority of people making a fuss about them don't even own a 360, and are just using it as an excuse to bash Microsoft.

Exactly, a lot of people online dislike them but no one really knows what percentage of 360 owners frequent forums etc.

Plus they are only on the dash, so I am reckoning most owners prob wont give a flying f**k after a couple of weeks once theyve gotten used to the new dash.

To bad they couldn't release this dasboardupdate 2 weeks earlier.. November 7th is when GoW2 is released and I was hoping I could play that in my monitor's native resolution of 1680x1050.. Or will that possibly be added in a seperate update?

It's bassicly the only thing I really care about in the next update.. :P

i figure alot of people are gonna bitch and moan but honestly since i havent been on my 360 as much as i used to im ready for a change like this. seeing as the 360 has the best online interface outta all 3 platforms i wonder how it will fare when they have a little bit of the other two.

Well the guide will improve, whatever you think of the rest. The old guide was basically the entire interface stuffed into one tiny section. They now remade that into a sort of blade system which looks a lot better and I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to find your way around better.

Well done microsoft on giving the x360 (a mostly mature gamer's console) some kiddy factor. Why the F**k would we want this? I'd buy a wii if I wanted to look like a pussy. Next time I sign in to my xbox live account infront of my friends I will be embarassed.

Must everything that happens become a bitchfest? For the love of god people!
All you "HARDCORE" gamers can still avoid all the easy to use, cleaner and far superior interface by simply pressing the GUIDE button which brings up the quicklaunch blade interface *cleaner and faster version of the current blades* and launch from there.

Happy?! You can avoid the MEE WEE/AVATAR/HOME/MII etc if you wish.

I for one am a gamer and anything that makes the interface easier to navigate and search able is welcomed.
From other reports i read the avatar will have functionality besides standing. It will be integrated into party games etc and displayed as your persona when playing 1 vs 100 and future game shows etc.

Let's not forget party chat and the ability to share movies *even netflix* with them.
16 by 10 support.
Game rip to HD
Netflix streaming
Auto invites to all friends in party when you wanna launch a game.
FASTER then existing Interface
LESS INTRUSIVE ADS! (now they will be smaller and blend in far better then the existing way they are displayed)
I'm sure i'm forgetting a bunch everyone gets my point.

Actually the avatars will have games, I know at least 1 that uses them, the 1 VS 100 virtual gameshow. There'll probably be more to come too. I don't see why anyone should care though since apart from any games that use them as characters the avatars are just an image on the dashboard, I'm sure they don't pop up during Gears Of War 2 and start hassling you, lol! By the way, Miis basically copied Wee Mees and Home basically copied Second Life so whatever.
