2009. The Summer of Death.

Ceaseless deaths of the famous mark summer `09

NEW YORK – We had been told to expect the deaths of the famous to come in threes, not in the dozens.

But all through the summer of 2009 came a ceaseless and somber drumbeat, as idols of all walks of life passed away. From Walter Cronkite to Sen. Ted Kennedy, the nonstop loss of luminaries continued almost as if a seasonal occurrence — as much a part of summer as hot dogs and humidity.

If a filmmaker were trying to capture the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson news would be playing in the background. Many thought coverage of Jackson's death was too much; a Pew Research Center poll released in July found that 64 percent of those surveyed thought the media blitz was overdone (though none could top MTV Japan, which designated an entire week of mourning for Jackson).

But news outlets went heavy on coverage for the many others who passed. Collectively, it made the constant commemorating hard to escape . . .

I don't want to come off as a dick, I'm never happy when people pass away, but elder people die, people with cancer die, anorectics that overuse drugs die etc. It would be a particular shame if a talented bunch of people died in a plane crush (like Lynyrd Skynyrd), because that would be really unlucky, but celebrities dieing of age or diseases is not a tradegy IMO.

Aah, the old 'well, other people in the world die so why does this get covered?' debate. The fact is that part of being a celebrity is that you're constantly in the spotlight; anything you say or do - providing it's news worthy - will show up in some form. So, when a celebrity dies, it's only natural that everyone hears about it. It's then up to the public to decide what they think of it.

Now you think it's not a tragedy - fair enough. But the fact is that you're always going to hear about it, while people that die every day from far worse causes don't get any coverage at all. I wouldn't expect them to. Whether it's a tragedy depends on how you feel about that celebrity. If he/she means nothing to you, you wouldn't expect to feel much sympathy other than the fact someone has died; but if he/she had some bearing on your life, like Michael Jackson did for me, then maybe it could be seen as a tragedy.

Celebrity deaths do get blown out of proportion, but that's the life of the celebrity. It's all about exaggeration.

There's some people I could only wish would die, but all the good ones go instead.

I don't like drawing attention to it, but you've been seeing a lot of very high profile deaths this year.

No one person's life is any more or less important than another, unless of course we are dealing with or comparing to the lives of terrible human beings, but you pretty much get my point.

what was your point? That only terrible people don't deserve to live?

If we get rid of all the terrible people, then where do we draw the line?

Don't worry, my definition of a terrible human being is one that pretty much nobody can, or should, disagree with.

I'm not talking kiddy stuff here, I'm talking about truly terrible people.

I think you would agree that individuals who purposely seek to target and cause the deaths of innocents are people we could do without?

Someone being a totally inconsiderate jerk doesn't necessarily qualify them as terrible human beings, I'm talking about the truly lowest of the low here.

There are many examples that I could come up with, but I'm too lazy :P
