The damn thing is detected, but will not set up and a gaming controller is there anything you can do for it to set up?

You could try to get the driver here if you haven't already: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/download....

Also would be good to know what version of Vista you have (Premium, Ultimate and then 32bit or 64bit). Is your controller wired or wireless too would be good to know.

I haven't tried with my own controller but maybe I test if it installs correctly.

Are you trying to configure it in the OS, or in a game?

As far as I know there is no OS config to be had, and if a game doesn't recognize your 360 pad, you're pretty much SOL, unless you come across some sort of hack or patch for the game.

I mean the OS won't even acknowledge it as a gampad. It's recognized but not as a game controller.

Did you try reinstalling the driver like Isomac suggested?

I have one on XP and it just calls it a USB Human Interface Device, but if I click its properties in the Device Manager I can see it is called the "Xbox 360 whatchamacallit".

Can't remember what the OS refers to it as, on initial plug in, though I think it was "Xbox 360 whatchamacallit"...
(of course that was after I installed the driver)

One thing more to test if you haven't already is to try another USB port. Sometimes my camera doesn't seem to work with XP/Vista but trying another USB solves this.

I tried with my controller and it worked right away. I'll try to think something more to try if you can't get it to work.

Oh and one more thing to ask. Does it show up on control panel -> game controllers? Just asking because I am not sure where you are trying to look it. Device manager? If so there it is named as PlumbDrumb said.
