2007-08-22 20:19:17 UK, August 22, 2007 - During the demo of Dark Sector we saw at E3 we were given a glimpse of one of the boss monsters we'd face later in the game; a giant behemoth who tossed around buses as if they were made from polystyrene. A month later and we're face-to-face with the Colossus, who's closed in on Hayden Tenno since our last viewing and is about to dish out some serious damage. The battle takes place in a half-wrecked church, the giant beast clambering in through holes in the roof before crashing to the ground at the opposite end of the aisle. As the cutscene switches to action the Colossus jumps to the side and begins climbing one of the pillars lining the walls of the church. He then uses his massive fists to grab huge chunks of masonry, which he throws at our hero. It's possible to shoot them out of the sky using the Glaive if Hayden is fast, but miss and he'll be instantly crushed. A much better - and certainly safer - method is it avoid the makeshift missiles altogether, by leaping safely to the side. Glaive in hand, Hayden retaliates but quickly realises his blade merely ricochets harmlessly off the beast's tough hide. However, anyone who's been keeping up with Dark Sector will know how Hayden can infuse different powers in his weapon, by throwing it through power cables to electrify it and, as is the case here, setting it on fire by tossing it into the flames. The burning hot Glaive cuts through the Colossus's armour with ease, causing him to lose his grip on the wall and fall to the ground with a crash. While the Colossus staggers around in a daze Hayden seizes his opportunity to deal the killer blow, by running in and shoving his blade in the beast's head, then sticking his gun in its face and pulling the trigger... Only he doesn't die the first time round, instead scampering back up into the rafters. On the third time the Colossus stays on the ground, charging at Hayden who uses the same attack pattern - set the Glaive on fire, burn through the beast's armour and finish off with a blade-pistol combo - to whittle down his enemy's health. It's not exactly revolutionary - why is it all boss enemies take three hits to bring down? - but it's exciting nonetheless. What's more, D3 has made a few improvements to the levels previously shown at E3. For starters the enemies are a lot more cautious when approaching Hayden, not just because he's a demon with a dagger but also because he's infected with the mutagen that gave him his powers. They therefore run around in full Hazmat suits to avoid contamination. It's a nice touch that supports the story that Hayden is a menace to everyone, even if they're not directly on the end of a vicious Glaive attack. With Resident Evil 5 still a couple of years off there's certainly room for a decent third-person action game. Whether Dark Sector is it remains to be seen but it's certainly heading in the right direction. Be sure to stay tuned for a thorough hands-on playtest in the next few weeks. But I guess I have been waiting so many years for it, a couple of months would be like weeks for me, so I have to wait. Besides, with so many cool demos and games planned before Fall I can most definitely keep myself busy with them until they release the demo and then later on the game itself. I heard Jericho for instance is coming out this month...demo that is. --- |
