Nah there are scenes in this game with 17 allied on screen at once. I know i read it somewhere.

Battles clearly get pretty crazy. You only control a single 4 man party though. There are even situations where three 4 man parties are moving independently to achieve a common goal or something to that effect.

Check some articles on it you'll find it. I'd link, but busy currently.
Well I think thats just retarded and my expectations have just been lowered, I can't imagine fighting with 17 allied characters on screen, by the time you add enemies to that it just guna look like a mess.

Square-Enix's Infinite Undiscovery kicks off a quartet of games coming from the famed RPG developer. Coming in September, Infinite Undiscovery mixes modern touches, such as real-time combat, with some classic elements. One of these classic elements is locking out content to gamers who play on lower difficulties. Play on easy and you will be warned that some content will not be a part of your experience. Choose normal and you will see "most" content. That means there are some bonuses for playing Infinite Discovery on hard, a concept that was quite the norm back in the '80s.

You play as Capell, a member of the Liberation Force. The game begins with you escaping through the dungeon of a castle. Early on you meet your first companion, Aya. You don't get to play as Aya (or any of your party members), but instead must rely on the AI to accurately back your play in combat.

You can offer some guidance to Aya. Hit the right bumper and you bring up the connect menu. From here you can direct a character to use specific "connect actions" in combat. For Aya, that means long-ranged attacks such as the Ravaging Raptor and the Peacock Plume. While Capell is moving in for melee attacks, Aya will assist as instructed.

Combat is fairly simple. It's light and heavy attacks which can lead to some brilliant animations in the proper combination. Some of the finishes are truly impressive. What's not so impressive at this stage is the framerate, which dips when more than two enemies are on screen. Square-Enix has time to smooth this out, which will need to happen for gamers to truly enjoy the real-time combat.

Along with a sword and some slick combat moves, Capell has a flute at his disposal. Over the course of the game, you will learn new tunes, which will act like spells. It's unknown how many tunes you can learn or if there is any sort of upgrade system for the flute.

Inventory management appears to be an important element of gameplay. That's going to make things tough, since the inventory screen opens in real time. So if you are in the midst of a heated battle, you're going to get worked pretty hard going through the menu system. So prep before you hit combat.

In the demo, which shows off the start of Infinite Undiscovery, you and Aya must make your way up a series of stairs while a massive red ogre (with blue tribal tattoos no less), charges after you. Along with a number of guards attempting to block your progress, there are wooden barriers closing off the stairs that need to be destroyed. The ogre will charge from behind, but will also climb up the sides of the stairwell to get at you.

Eventually, you and Aya are cornered. You have no choice but to battle the ogre and remaining guards. Fortunately, someone lined the walls with explosive barrels. Have Aya take them out with her bow and you can do some serious damage to the ogre without getting smashed.

RPGs are always difficult to judge at a show like E3. Ten minutes of play doesn't give a very good sense to the game world or even the RPG elements. The combat, while simple, is fun. The production value seems to have the same quality Square-Enix gives to every title. Expect some gorgeous CG cut-scenes and a heavy dose of story. So, in other words, it will probably be awesome.

But without having more significant time with Infinite Undiscovery, it's hard to say for certain that Square-Enix will deliver. Let's hope so.
I was under the impression that the cutscenes were mostly in game, no mention of many characters on screen either, seems they only had access to the demo that was shown at the SE party not so long ago.

Looks like I will be playig the game on hard from the get go though, don't want to miss out on anything.

You can't switch between the parties. You may be with 2 other parties of 4, but you will only be able to control one 4 man party and no others.

There will be a scene in the game when up to 17 allied characters are on screen according to Tri-Ace. If they are going all out like that, then maybe they believe they'll be able to optimize it all.

Sure they can optimize it but if they are having these kind of problems with a few characters on screen, 17 sounds like its out of the question, framrate problmes are the last thing you need in a real time RPG.

It could end up being something that ruins the game, I hope not because my hopes are set high for this game, and we are past the point of shoddy first gen titles.

Very true, but clearly they've got some coding issues they need to worry about because there were times in some videos where multiple people were on screen and it didn't seem anywhere near as bad as some have sadi in previews, but clearly we'd all like it to get even better :)

Would be cool if installing it to the hard drive ended up making a big difference :P

Why they didn't implement shadows for the most part? Makes it look very flat.

:| there are no shadows ?

Damn that's pretty bad for a game of this gen, I hate to say it but Tri-Ace really haven't impressed me visually with this game, especially when you consider what they did with VP2 on the PS2.

Lets hope they try a bit harder with SO4.

I've definitely seen shadows in this game before. I actually see some in the shots above.

S04 is already one of the best looking games visually for the 360 so far imo. Watching the E3 2008 trailer on the 360 proves that. Incredible lighting, amazing looking environments, incredible textures, amazing special effects. The game appears to be pushing a lot of polys as well.

It's understandable that IU doesn't look as good as S04 graphically because of all the things that it has to do from a technical standpoint. Fully seamless world with no separation between field and battle. Tsunamis during actual gameplay, being chased by a dragon while carrying a party member, boulders coming at players on the field and a few other things like detection by enemies via sight, smell, sound and Star Ocean is probably the title that is higher up on the priority list, but you can tell they're putting serious effort into this one.

Also battles appear to get pretty large as well and the combat seems to be pretty good as well considering what it is already doing from a technical standpoint. The effects look pretty great as well. The game is more impressive than one would initially think and when people get to see it on their HDTVs I think they will see that.

New gameplay details and some new screenshots.

New Gameplay Details thanks to duckroll on Gaf.

This week's Famitsu has a 2 page article showing off 3 characters (only 1 is a party member though) as well as some stuff we didn't know about before:

- Privite Events are in! When PEs happen between the main character and a party member, there are dialogue options and stuff just like in the SO games!

- Party Connects in towns and villages! When in a town or village Capel can Connect with a party member like he does in battle, allowing the player to bring that party member along with Capel around the village to interact with people (and animals) to get results that he would not get alone!

Wow the new shots look fantastic.

A lot of great looking stuff in there :)

I hope they lock the framerate. Oh and on GAF they said there was private event detailed where aya was wearing some skimpy skirt and she falls down and Capel is able to see up her skirt so then she starts to interrogate him about what he saw lol.

This game looks so good.

Komachi does look cool, too bad we will never play as her directly, this connect thing has me very scepticle.

One thing for example is what if Capel dies, is it gameover or do we just sit back and watch as the AI party members fight by themselves?

How does this connect thing work anyway ? and dont we have some kind of control over the setting of the AI of the other characters ?

Also is it true that at some point, more than 4 playable characters will be on screen ?
