Gameplay looks fun, music is good But damn, this is still looking like a PS2 game in HiRes! The textures, lighting and overall design looks a decade old, its a shame.

How does this connect thing work anyway ? and dont we have some kind of control over the setting of the AI of the other characters ?

Also is it true that at some point, more than 4 playable characters will be on screen ?
I think you have nothing to worry about as long as your ai party members bring you back to life?

I think it's game over if your entire party dies. You do have a lot of control about how the AI acts.

The way the connect action works is you press the right bumper to bring up the connect action menu and from there various party members are available to choose from on the face buttons. Once you pick a specific party member you can then decide which ability you wish for them to use. I know for a fact you can take control of a specific party member's ability, but I don't know if such a thing is possible for all of them.

I read that you have the ability to assign certain character abilities to a quick assign button so you don't need to access the connection action menu. So you can tell a party member to perform a specific attack while you do your thing.

Your flute also has multiple abilities. It breaks illusions, gives your party buffs and I think even allows Capel to perform magic.

Yes it's true alimo. There will be times where you have 3 parties of 4 in the same place or even battles where there will be up to 17 party members fighting in an area. The one thing that can hold this game back is performance.

I'm totally blown away that, looking at those screens, the latest ones on the site, that anyone could refer to this as looking like a high res ps2 game. The textures, lighting, overall design, looks a decade old? Come on :)

There are more than enough aspects of this game's design that simply wouldn't be quite as practical on the ps2.

The lighting doesn't stand out as much as it does in say something like Star Ocean 4, but this game DOES have really good lighting and the lighting they are using makes their character designs really stand out. The textures are a lot better than simply high res ps2. I think this fact will be proven when we have it running in front of us. This is one great looking game for me personally and I don't know maybe that's because I love how the character design's stand out and the art direction.

Well thats sounds ok I suppose, but it would have been nice if you could cycle through the characters like in Star Ocean, you could even do this with VP2.

It feels like a step back for me where you are limiting the player by only using one character, plus I kind of like playing magic classes and Capel is a melee character.

The special effects in this game look fantastic. Combat is going to be really fun to play and look at if those awesome effects are present along with a solid 30fps.

Oh and an E3 2008 hands on impression that some may have missed.

http://www.destructoid.com/e3-08-hands-on-with-inf...

First impressions are very, very important. Case in point: despite my love of Square-Enix games, when I heard about Infinite Undiscovery last September, all I could think was "That is the stupidest f*cking name for an RPG I have ever head in my life." It's the latter half I can't handle. Making up a word is certainly ok, but butchering a preexisting one just violates the rules of grammar in a way that messes up my tailfeathers.

Because of this initial impression, I walked up to the game on the E3 show floor this morning with no expectations whatsoever and little knowledge of what I would actually get to play. All I knew was that the screenshots were pretty, the battle system was real time, and I was still really mad about the stupid name.

Hit the jump to read how my hands-on time with Infinite Undiscovery turned my first impression into something else entirely.

First off, you may think you have an idea of this from the screenshots, but let me say it again because I can -- this game is absolutely gorgeous in person. The crisp surroundings and character renderings jumped out at me as the first two memorable elements. Square-Enix is pretty fail-safe when it comes to delivering a graphically polished product, and Infinite Undiscovery definitely holds the standard firmly in place.
To walk up to a game feeling unenthusiastic and walk away really excited is almost more special for me than playing a game I was already excited about, and that's exactly how I felt about Infinite Undiscovery. It looks and feels like a rich offering for RPG fans, and I definitely found it refreshing to stand outside the Final Fantasy universe and see what else Square can do. Maybe all these side projects aren't such a bad idea after all.

Not for a while, and I wasn't saying I wanted another Star Ocean I just want to play as someone other than Capel.

The story better be very good in this game because so far I ain't all that impressed.

It seems like Tri-Ace have put their least talented people on this game whilst the others have been working on Star Ocean 4. (which is good news for SO4 I suppose :P)

I wouldn't say that jolli, they have some of their best people working on IU.

They may not have as many people working on this as they do Star Ocean and I assume the budget on the game isn't as high, but the sheer amount of new details that keep coming up for this game showcase that they are putting a lot of effort into this game.

The way the combat works with the force system gives it a lot of depth, the connect action system, the situational battles and other kinds of obstacles that can get in your way, the numerous ways enemies can detect your presence, the recent news that private events between various party members are in where you get to choose dialog options, then there is the incorporating of party member's abilities not just for combat purposes, but to help you out in the game world as well. Maybe a party member will have an ability that allows you to move forward or another will have an ability to help you get information from more unlikely sources like animals.

The connect action system also allows you to take specific party members with you in places to get results during conversations with towns folk or various other individuals that you wouldn't get otherwise were you to have a different person accompany you.

You can go into the menu and get a small summary of what a character's like or dislikes are and other character specific information and you can then act on what you learn, if you wish, to affect your relationship with that party member positively or negatively.

A crap load of effort is going into this one and they do have a good deal of their most talented working on this title. The biggest difference between this and Star Ocean, in my opinion, is likely the budget because a lot of Tri-Ace's most talented people are definitely present and accounted for.

One of the biggest reasons to not assume the worst for IU is to look at the man directing it. He knows his shit. There is also no doubt in my mind that the combat will be insane! :D

The only jrpg where I have serious worries as to the amount of care and work going into it is definitely Last Remnant. My biggest issue for IU isn't one about quality, but whether they'll be able to get it running at a rock solid fps. I expect IU to be the 360's best reviewed jrpg until Star Ocean arrives.

4 new gameplay videos from IGN!

http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/821710/square-e...

Gameplay looks pretty awesome besides the person sucking :D

Visually, I think it looks great and I can't get enough of those special effects. When is release date? How much time do they have to lock the framerate down? The drops that do occur are pretty minor so hopefully they can clean it up even more. They definitely improved it greatly over what it was before.

Watched some of the others. So beautiful.

Holy crap at semberas video!!

This baby is looking hot. Please please improve framerate. The graphics really do look awesome. High res ps2 game, this is not.

Wow action really does get pretty crazy in this game. I'm loving the look of the combat system. You can really see all the effort going into this one. I would take the game even with the slowdowns present, but if they manage to lock it then that's even better!

Most impressive looking gameplay from a jrpg this gen. Let's hope they can lock the framerate. If not, then I'll still enjoy it.

It annoys me though that no previewer even thinks to ask the developer questions like this. They clearly notice the frame drops, but they don't ask the developers if they think it is something they'll be able to improve before release. If they do ask, then they should at least let us know that they did and give us the developer's response to the question.

I agree with you to some point, but I do not think it has the better gameplay so far, IMO ToV gameplay looks a bit better to me.
As for the frame drops, you know how the press works. People usually thinks that this gen should have solve framerate issues, but that is impossible to solve and we wiil have this problem forever due to time development and money.
Frame drops don't bother me too much in an RPG, since they do not affect the gameplay drastically, so for me this game is looking just fine. We'll find out this september.

I say better because as awesome as tov looks and as insane as the combat can get in that one, the combat can get just as good in this game as there are many aspects to the games combat.

This is the jist of how in depth the combat system can get in IU.

Basic combat - Pressing the A button delivers a normal attack on the targeted enemy, while the B button will deliver a heavy attack. Different combos will result in different sequences of attacks, with the heavy attack always being the final blow in a combo.

Reflect Drive - By timing the LT button at the right time, just before an enemy's blow hits Capel, he will perform a Reflect Drive counter. This counter attack strike will leave the enemy defenseless for a moment allowing you to retaliate with a deadly combo. even works on some bosses

Battle Skills - As Capel gains various Battles Skills as he progresses, you will be able to map these attacks onto the X and Y buttons. Pressing the respective button in combat will trigger that skill. You can use a battle skill to finish a chain of regular attacks as well, instead of a heavy attack. Battle Skills take up MP when used.

Action Points - The vertical bar on the right of the screen represents the AP bar. When you gain Action Points, the AP bar increases and goes up. When an enemy is being attacked, the AP bar will indicate a level on the bar. If the current AP bar is higher than that level, heavy attacks and Battle Skills will gain an additional edge. Depending on the type of heavy attack or the individual Battle Skill, the enemy will either be struck into the air, knocked away or smashed onto the ground. This puts the enemy in a vulnerable position for additional combos.

Force - A successive series of combos on an enemy will result in Yellow Force gained for the party. This Yellow Force replenishes Action Points. When a successive series of combos are delivered on an enemy that has been struck into the air, Red Force will give the party additional experience points. A successive series of combos on an enemy that has been smashed onto the ground will result in Green Force, replenishing HP and MP for the party.

Connect Action - Similar to Battle Skills, Capel can also equip two Connect Actions for each party member, mapped to the X and Y buttons. In combat, hitting the RB button will show the Connect Guide which maps each of other other three party members onto a respective button - X, A and B. Hitting that button will connect Capel with that party member. When connected, Capel can still move normally and attack, but pressing X or Y will trigger the respective Connect Action which puts Capel in direct control of that character's respective skill for the moment.

Tactics - While the player controls only Capel, there are different party tactics that can be activated in battle. This will change the way the party behaves and give you better control over any given situation. There are available commands: Move freely, Split up and attack, Concentrate on one enemy, Stay behind and wait, Combo, and Conserve MP.
Now take all those details into consideration and now consider that all we just saw in those videos takes place in a 100% seamless world with no separation between where you explore and where you fight. I don't suspect that TOV will have a more impressive combat system than IU, judging by what Tri-Ace usually puts out, but the game's combat just looks so unbelievably flashy with all the effects they got going on there and even TOV, as awesome it looks, doesn't look quite like that. I'm not so much trying to say which game has the better combat system when I say most impressive looking gameplay, even though I have a suspicion that IU will be the better of 2, but I'm more saying that, of the 2, IU gives me more of a shocking impression, in a good way.

Yea, framerate as is, I would still gladly play this one without much issue, but I do expect some noticeable improvements to the framerate because it could use a bit of fine tuning. If it doesn't get any I'll still enjoy it nonetheless. Still I hope it does get improved :)

The funny thing is I think they've for the most part got the performance down. It's when the main character performs his crazy swing animations that the performance gets awkward. When he's not doing those insane attacks the performance really does look great so I hope it's just a small issue in their code that can be fixed before release.

Going to seem even more spoiled come TGS. We know Sakaguchi has multiple things cooking in the oven, and no he's not pregnant so it has to be more rpgs. Timing for the announcement of a Blue Dragon or even Lost Odyssey sequel is just right I think. A sequel of either game would be awesome, but there is some truly massive potential for a BD sequel going based on the ending.

We know Cry On is coming and I have a really good feeling about it. Sakaguchi also has other titles in the works that he mentioned awhile back in an interview. Nonetheless, this game looks so awesome.

Oh and 2 new gameplay videos this time in HD. From same demo, but different gameplay videos.

Dude in first vid lifted an ogre in the air with the combination of his attacks :o As duckroll mentioned on gaf there appears to be some deliberate slowdown put in place when he main character initiates one of his more flashy attacks, but naturally things get messy when a real slowdown occurs. This shouldn't be anything that can't fix since it seems mostly coincide with each time the main tries a swing.

Yea the 2 kids are pretty awesome now from what I'm seeing. I also like how intelligent the AI seems. The way they are healing capel is pretty damn aggressive and perfectly timed.

It needs to be in a game where you can't pause to enter the menu during combat unless you want to die, but I like how the game's combat system factors in for strategic purposes to either improve AP, experience points or restor HP to the party.

Lost Odyssey wasn't crappy, it was awesome. Oh and the name lends itself well to a new world with new characters and such just like Final Fantasy. Kaim, Jansen etc, none of them have to be involved in a new Lost Odyssey. So it would be an entirely new game world and characters just now officially a franchise.

So you're saying they should just make a totally new game and reuse the name of their last one... uhhh NO !!

It's ok for FF to do that because thats the way they have been doing it for years but I don't agree with the concept.

If you make a new game it should have a new name IMO, otherwise you are piggybacking the success off peoples expectations of the old game.

I didn't realise I had to say this though but when I say its crappy, that is my opinon, no matter how many times any one tells me otherwise, its not guna change it.

I didn't finish it because the story lost steam and became so boring, the random battles every 2 seconds drove me almost insane aswell.
