LCD Burn in? / Further funk!

I think I had Mass Effect's pause menu up for a bit too long because now I'm SEEING THINGS. MENU ITEM.. THINGS.

At least there's a ghostly boxy thing on the screen now and it seems to fit nicely into the "save" item on the pause menu.

Does LCD burn in eventually fade away? Is there something I can do to shock it away like putting a Rez playthrough on fast forward/repeat?

LCD's don't burn in, that effect you're having is called 'persistence of image' on LCD's. Turning of your screen (unplug socket outlet) for 24 hours or so should fix the problem...

You get image persistence on pretty much any screen. You're only at risk for perma damage if you're using a CRT or Plasma for the most part.

There are some simple executables out there that create a fullscreen static effect to resolve this.
I've never used one but supposedly you can run it for twenty or so minutes to get rid of the retained image.

Sledgehammer works fine and dandy

Swing it with enough G and it will fix your issue, not to much though you might strain yourself.

Now my screen has developed a new funky defect. At the top of the screen, off slightly to the left, is a dark, shadowy blob. I can't say when it got there or if it did so gradually, I just noticed it a lot when I was playing Brotherhood the other day.

It's like a stain, basically, perhaps 10ish centimeters wide. I can still plainly see the image "behind" it, it simply makes it darker, much like a water stain on a piece of paper.

What, if anything, gives?

Shadowy spot appears slowly as the display heats up, too. It was gone when I started the telly earlier, but now it's appeared again.

After a truckload of Sherlock Holmesing I've found out that it may be a thing refered to as the "mura effect".

http://www.behardware.com/articles/589-1/panels-a-...

Explained there.

Doesn't help though, I seem at the mercy of randomness.

The more commonly used term apparently is "clouding", that might help a bit in the search for a solution.

Here's a couple of interesting topics I found on the matter:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=10...

http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-led-lcd-tvs/101...

From what I've gathered, the fixes mentioned in the topics above might be a solution, but it seems in most cases you are going to have to get it repaired, get a replacement, or simply live with it. :(

Thanks for the links! I dunno if clouding is the same thing, though, because that seems to be about light leaking through the display creating bright spots.

This is a dark spot, and it keeps fading and reappearing. Soooo weird.

I thought they were the same thing, but just 'variants' with the same root cause (could be wrong though). Either way, good luck! ;)

Well I'm just semi guessing, because I dunno how leaking light could result in a dark spot, so. :)

And thanks, I'll need luck, I have no idea what to do. I've started looking up prices on tellies, getting somewhat used to the thought of having to get a new one.

Are plasma burn-ins virtually a non-issue these days?

I believe most modern plasma tv's use several techniques/improved manufacturing processes/material to combat burn-ins, but other than that I can't say for sure it's a non-issue. You'd be best to check out the avforums or the likes for some proper feedback...lot's of die-hards over there. :P

I kept it off for 2 day (agonising gameslessness!) and it actually seems to have faded. Been playing for a bit now and it doesn't seem to be coming back. There's a VERY feint tendency still, but keeping it off for long stretches does seem to be the cure!

Man, I kinda semi believe in karma with these things, so it would be nice to know I'm not a bad person. :O

Yeah, but that's not really an option given I just spent all my savings on a new computer and a new phone. Worst timing ever on this. :(

My old LCD would get image retention after being on for 5 minutes. It became useless for playing games.

seriously dude, you have no luck with screens...

Just whack your systems up to a old crt, those things have awesome resolutions and last forever.

CRT's definitely do not last forever. Hell, they die forever! Who hasn't had an aging CRT that's been on its last leg for several years?

And no, if you have to hit your monitor to get it to work, it's not actually good :P

I have a 40" sony LCD now and its fine except that it has a horrible response rate so I get nasty smearing. My LG monitor is smaller (22") and lower resolution but I often use it for 360 gaming cause it has a much faster response rate.
