Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain :: Stealthy Bastard does it again

Hi guys,

wonder how you like MGSV so far? I really love it, although I hate it sometimes - Hideo doesn't know, what the term "checkpoint" means, but apart from that I really enjoy it.

It's quite time consuming though, all that sneakin ;)

Sometime I play a new mission for 20 mins., collect all kinds of shit and then get caught or die and have to start it all over again. Shouldn't happen in 2015 anymore IMO.

it's an annoyingly addictive, yet highly repetitive grind...that's the best way i can describe it.

the stealth mechanics are good, but the systems in place regarding item building, and mother base are awful and actually hurt the variety of play. the world is a means to and end rather then an integral addition to the gameplay (see LA noire and mafia 2) it's used to travel between enemy bases, but the enemy bases could quite easily exist in isolation and be just as open to approach and fun to tackle. plus they could be thematically different if that were the case (snow levels etc rather then endless Africa/Afghan colour palets) the world is basically empty and locations are re-used over and over much like in an equally dull open world: far cry 2.

I'm well over 50 hours in and i still can't craft one of their pre-made silenced tranq rifles. that in itself is ludicrous for a title that promotes stealth (due to the rating system) and promotes non lethal means (due to mother base and fultoning live enemies) BUT, due to being able to customise guns, you can create your own by buying a loud tranq rifle and a silenced regular rifle...which still took around 25 hours to acquire yet you can craft about million loud and lethal means of a attack...the complete opposite of what you actually want in a stealth title.

the waiting for thing to build reminds me of a free-to-play game and exists purely to lengthen the game.

and that's not even talking about the shit plot and bad voice acting (which I'll avoid so not to spoil this travesty of a story and themes)

oh. and mission 24-29 are just plain shit. who thought that was a good gameplay mechanic to introduce needs a punch in the face...it rivals planet scanning in terms of sheer boredom and busy work

look like an up-res'd PS3 game too. i don't quite regret the purchase. but i don't think it's a good game, let alone a 10/10

I agree in a lot of points Korn. What's also funny is the lack of variation in enemy design. I know they are all soldiers, but every other game gets bashed if it has too many clones and I didn't read a single review that mentioned it.

What is working really good though is the picking up of items like plants, weapons etc. Not a chore like in the Witcher 3 [otherwise fantastic game].

I'm currently in the mission where you first see the "mechs" in Afghanistan and have to rescue Hal. Started it 3 times already and everytime I played about 30 mins. - frustrating to start from the beginning each time.

Sigh, gotta use that night-vision more often...

end game spoilers

now, i'm not going to talk about the general low quality of the story itself, and how it somehow manages to be even more rediculous then past games. But that end missions. Mission 46. Does kojima have no understanding of basic game design? Or was he so in love with that overly cinematic, hand held intro they just desperately wanted you to play through it again? I mean, it wasn't even a shortened version, it was the entire intro up to the ambulance crash AGAIN. even after the time i put into the game that opening was fresh in my mind and the last thing i needed to end the game on is A corridoor section where i flopped about like a dying fish again for 5 excruciating minutes while "big boss" (obvious from even the early trailers you wasn't playing as him, but i'll get to that in a second) decides to start walking again.

Now. Onto that "plot twist" we saw a mile off. If the fact you was called "venom snake" in EVERY MISSIONS opening credits wasn't a big enough clue. Trailers sure as hell spoiled it. It was just utterly needless. And just made the overaching story of MGS even more convoluted... if such a thing was possible. This should have been a stepping stone for big boss and his transition from good, to evil. And while it's hinted at at the VERY end with a conversation between ocelot and miller, it was just more filler that didn't need to be there. They had a chance to push the characterisation of big boss but copped out instead. All that shit you did in MGSV was redundant. It was irrelevant to the main story, and your actions have no effect on anyone. Basically the real big boss is out there making the outer haven we were anticipating, and frankly, THAT should have been the game and premise behind MGSV. Not some dopleganger pointless shite.

That ending was such a huge dissapointment

Finished it a few days ago and didn't even realize it, with the 25mins. credits rolling on for the 3rd time. Absolutely hate the "ending", it's a farce. Also hate the consequences with a character near the end, because it breaks the game if you played it in some particular way.

After finishing it I finally caved in and catched-up on all forums, spoilers and things guys found in the PC version - a 3rd chapter. This game is unfinished.

Introducing "insurance" with real money via GMP [in the newest patch] for your Forward Operating Base in an online-mode of a game I paid full-price for, is the tip of the iceberg. I'm finished with this game. Gameplay is very good. Open world is not needed and in fact a chore, "checkpoints" that actually aren't checkpoints are pre-2K10 and the story has been toned down 80% compared to MGS4. It all feels rushed and unfinished.

I haven't touched MGSV since I beat it. I may never touch this incomplete bullshit of an game ever again....but I do love my special metal cover that features shinkawa's art.
