I'm actually thinking about learning to play the guitar, but I have no idea where to start (aside from getting a guitar at my local music shop

You can get just about any sound out of a Strat too, so they are just all around good guitars.
Then, learn a few simple scales and chords. You'll be making your own music before you know it.

It should be fun to go shopping for one though. Try 'em all out without having to plug them in!
Just don't spend a lot of money on your first one.
