2008-12-01 22:01:26 PlayStation 3 Yellow Light Of Death?

Hi everyone.

It's all started when I was playing some Far Cry 2..
Loaded my savegame then my Ps3 suddenly turned off. I tried to switch on again, but it beeped three times then the red led turned yellow for a second and the system turned off.

This is what happened exactly with my Ps3 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmLlvRtpHrA

It's a 60Gb model bought in June 6 2007. It was kept horizontal and in a place that has good airflow. I admit it ran a lot, and I kept switched on and off everyday 4-5 times. And of course the warranty has expired. I called the store where I bought and they told me that there's a shop called "service of the consoles" maybe they can repair it but it will be expensive. They also told about Sony's Hungarian service but it was more expensive, and I don't have enough money..
So, what should I do? Anyone experienced this kind of problem? And what's going to be with my saved games and trophies, I will loose everything? To be honest, I really don't want to buy a new console..

Thanks in advance.

Ps: Sorry for my english

Just backup your saves on a usb device or remove the hard drive before chucking the bricked PS3 on the trash pile ;)

That totally suck man!!. I bought mine on launch day so I hope I`m covered if anything goes wrong. Although Microsoft have taken alot of flack regarding the RROD, at least they treat people better than Sony do!!.

I thought that all electrical goods carry a 2yr warranty anyway?.

That's right. 1 year warranty is not enough.. I admit, when I bought the console the news was full of 360's RROD.. so I thought the PS3 is a lot more reliable.. and yeah it was a lot of money.. 160000HUF it's about 774$.. And my 6 year old pc is still running lol..

Well its sucks but Sony have always been assholes when it comes to faulty products (the good thing is that their products don't break that often), as with most products though after the warrenty runs out its up to you to get it fixed.

It's worth adding that MS only fix our consoles for free because they know their product is at fault and they don't want to see a huge legal battle to pay out to its consumers.

I know that they had BIG problems with regards to the RROD etc, but I have always been extremely pleased with Microsofts hardware policies. (well, compared to Sony anyway).

No but MS changed their hardware policy after so many consoles became faulty, before hand they had the same policy as Sony.

Finally I've decided to buy a new PS3 (it appears that was some problem with the mainboard I've read on an another forum that this is a "common" problem amongst 60gig PS3's, and they seem to die one and a half year after purchase) Anyone has the 80gig model here? What are the experiences with that? Just asking because I'm a little worried lol..

That may be true for the US where the warranty is just a few weeks, but the warranty was 2 years right from the start here in europe, they just extended it to 3 years for the ROD. So yes their customer care is the best I've experienced yet, and that was long before they admited they were at fault.

The 2 years in the EU has nothing to do with MS, it has to do with EU LAWS for consumer rights for general electrical products.

Customer care here is pretty good though, but it in no way does it make up for the major cock up the 360 really is.

Same here man.
I found a killer deal on a PS3 bundle but decided against it.

I really want a bluray player and Killzone2 so if anyone can chime in, please do.

And another thing. I'll check if my PS3s hard drive is still functioning. And if it does, what can I do to backup my saved games? Is there a program for reading the PS3's file system on PC? Because I really really need them.

To answer that question, I've seen a few reports of people having their 80GB's getting the "YLOD", so yes...it seems that it happens to the 80GB models as well.

Check out this forum: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/...

I don't think this problem is all that serious though, not atm anyway. I don't think the signals are as alarming as they've been (and are still) with the 360, it's definitely not going to hold me back on a PS3 purchase.

I will however keep an eye on this as I'm looking to buy another PS3 maybe next year, after selling mine last year. But, untill I see some more alarming reports, I don't think it's a valid reason not to go for a PS3.

Warranty doesn't mean you'll get your stuff fixed without questions asked. In fact they have to fix it just when the defect occours within the first 6 months. Everything that exceeds this timeframe, YOU have to prove the defect was the companys fault (before it is assumed to be their fault)... and that's pretty much impossible with hi tech products.

I had written some stuff to dispute your statements, but after looking it up properly, I stand corrected. This is indeed true.

Still, in practice it's not all that relevant (and not all that relevant in this discussion either). I've had to return something often after the 6 months period, without a hassle.

Usually any company will fix a product for you, even if you're lying and it's obviously your fault

There are a lot of rules and procedure in business that don't allow for any type of mistreatment to a consumer so as not to affect their future buying their product.
People get a lot of free things in life by simply complaining enough

That doesn't matter they still changed their policy after realising they were in the wrong, admiting it has nothing to do with it.

Don't think they are giving you a better service out of the goodness of their hearts they are forced to do this otherwise they could be taken to court over it.
