Being completely realistic it's a bold undertaking, But if it's really happening then it's happening. Logically Price and many other factors stand in the way of true 4k gaming. Many have speculated that having an expensive powerful version of the console will grab double the market. I say the costs of having a powerful version of a console on the market could backfire leaving only one reasonable version of a console for everyone buy. It is inevitable that a 4k console would eventually drop in price, leaving only one sensible purchase.

Second, Just how much power would it take to do true 4k gaming when not all games run at native anyways? I've speculated at least 3x the amount of system resources. which would lead to many other concerns under the hood of these small consoles. TDP of stronger GPUs require lots of power and so you just can't simply have a massive power supply inside of the console. PC cases are usually bigger as a result of this.

Now, word was mentioned about the idea of a "expanding console", which leaves room for the console to be sold at the same price and still have a future of true 4k gaming. the easiest way to do this would be to externally support a GPU that IS capable of 4k gaming out of the box. similar idea to gaming laptops with external upgrades -
http://fossbytes.com/razer-blade-stealth-is-an-ult...

this is not only beneficial to console gamers but also PC gamers too because the hardware could be shared. and the prices of consoles wouldn't have to be expensive.

My two cents.

New consoles every few years would be fine by me - people pay a lot of money (many every year) to get a new smartphone. This E3 is gonna be hot I guess...

Yeah.. But, will I be able to pay monthly for my upgraded console?

I think it's riskier for two different consoles of the same type to split the market. eventually people will wait for the better version to drop in price and overtake the older model. it's a tricky situation if not conceived correctly. Now Expanding A Console Would be more of workable solution if done right, locking the upgrade to a single type of component could simply work. Whichever way done the market of the console wouldn't have to be divided between price ranges or types of Consoles. Only a simple component upgrade would be needed for the same purpose.

Anyways We'll see how everyone plays their cards for this E3. totally can't wait.

If it's true the PS4 Neo will cost exactly the same price as the regular PS4 ($400) then I would imagine they're gonna gradually phase out the regular PS4 altogether. My guess they will still make games compatible for both PS4s for two years, but then it's mainly the Neo as VR becomes the norm, and devs master the PS4 Neo.

the duration of phasing out the regular versions would need to be at least 6 years total, completing it's cycle. Also A true 4k console sold for $400 in this point in time would be sold at a huge loss. that's supposed to be the bargaining chip for the next generation actually. The last generation had a really hard time bringing in the HD standard at an affordable launch price. It's going to be costly to the console manufacture if it's not priced realistically; since neither company makes the hardware. True 4k gaming is costly on PC as it is.

Now as previously mentioned, Allowing 4k supported hardware via expansion is nowhere near as costly to the console manufacture; it's just adding support. the console could be sold at the same or similar price with the support added. And not only that but TRUE 4k at 60fps would be available as a benefit.

True, it would definitely be the cheapest 4K player on the market. I believe Sony is banking on consumers like me who are gonna also purchase an 4Ktv, since they will have an 4K compatible PS4 (Neo). Sdarts gave me some helpful tips on what to look for in 4Ktvs. I'm definitely will get an Samsung. Now as for the phasing out of regular PS4s...I guess it will depend on how quickly 4K definition and VR entertainment will take off. Sony is really taking an chance with the PS4 Neo, because the current PS4 has been printing money for the company.

I suspect this is what's going to happen:

PS4 --- > release Nov 2013 supports all games released between Nov 2013 to Nov 2019
PS4.5 ---> release Nov 2016 supports all games released between Nov 2013 to Nov 2019

New Generation, all games from Nov 2013 to 2019 are playable on the new PS5 via backward compatibility.

PS5 ----> release Nov 2019 supports all games released between Nov 2019 to Nov 2025 + backward compatibility
PS5.5 ---> release Nov 2022 supports all games released between Nov 2019 to Nov 2025 + backward compatibility

i think for this to even work particularly well, they can't drop support of the lower spec model until PS5 is released. and i think there will always be 2 supported machines at any given time.

so PS4 and PS4.5 will run all games until the PS5 is released. at which point PS4 will stop being supported and all games will run on PS4.5 and PS5. this will carry on for 2-3 years until PS5.5 is released, at which point PS4.5 stops being supported but all games run on PS5 and PS5.5 etc etc

you effectively need to drop forward compatible support at some point to see any significant jumps to visuals. but i think backwards compatible support will continue throughout multiple iterative hardware at least until that hardware improves in ways that prevent it from happening.

I think if Microsoft wants this to be accepted as the norm, then in the future they should release both Xbox Elite and Xbox Standard at the same time. If gamers are continually convinced that a newer and better edition is coming they may not adapt at all.

I don't see Microsoft releasing every 3 years either.
