Should Indie games be included in GOY talk

New to this site..... first thread so apologies if this topic has been discussed to death.



My thoughts on this are pretty straightforward.......YES, however it has been made clear to me recently that I might be in the minority if so why? The usual arguments against their inclusion is that they don't bring much to the table when stacked against fellow nominees e.g. Journey vs GTA....

Thats a dumb argument. Indie games, at least the good ones, are udually by far more creative and inspired than big AAA type of games that just play it safe, banking on cutscenes to carry them along rather than gameplay.

Obviously not true for all big games, especially if we are talking multiplayer games. In that arena i dont think indie devs really have much chance of competing.

Ultimately its a pointless topic because doritoking keighley and his dew fueled cronies seem to just pick whatever game sold the most as goty at every shite ass awards ahow anyway. Just play what you enjoy, and dont care about stupid, hollow awards.

Yea as a gamer it's not even a question. But I get why press outlets do it I guess.

Well, i mean...i think the gaming press is in a bit of a weird place. Maybe it's the same in other entertainment related press as well (i wouldn't know), but it seems like a lot of gaming sites are more about asskissing than actually serving honest views to their readers. I mean the VGAs, for example, are a joke to me.

Most of the time indies can't deliver the amount of content AAA's can, which is where the issue comes in

An Indie has to do something really special to get GOTY

I'm not so sure about that. Most AAA games are pretty light on content to begin with.

It's not like every AAA game is GTAV.

In general i think the only thing brought to the table by most AAA titles is production value. Yes, you get the fancies graphics, the most expensive voice overs, the most well directed cutscenes. But then again they need to sell 6 million copies on launhc weekend, so it you know...it can't be niche or anything. Can't even remember the last time i saw a big budget game and though "wow, that looks creative/interesting".

Of course. Indie games have won GOTY like Journey in 2012.

This year one of the best candidates is an indie game. The Witness.

Though it doesn't matter that much, Uncharted 4 is clearly going to win. It's only possible competition is Deus Ex. We'll see.

I nearly forgot that I picked this up recently. I should probably play it.

Starbound is another that ranks high on my list for the year.
