with the success of ipad and the entering of new devices like the galaxy tab and dell streak, is it worth getting a tablet pc's. to those that have bought them what do use them. im reluctant to get one because idk where this new market is heading, i want to wait and see what will offered besides superior hardware and apps

i mean galaxy tab doesn't even use proper OS for tabs (their rumors of including chrome). while apple does a remarkable job are its apps gimmicks or are they fully developed software that are equivalent to their desktop counter parts. while i like how other companies put so many features, do they all work or is just to give apple competition because i have notice apple never puts feature if its shitty and not working

so will the better be in software or hardware, and is it time to buy one

You can dream all you want, kid, but it won't do any good 'cause when you wake up again you'll realize nothing has changed.

It depends what you're looking for. There's huge diversity among "tablets." There are devices like the iPad and Galaxy Tab, which aren't really tablet PC's, there are slates like the HP Slate 500, which are relatively young and don't pack a lot of power but have a load of potential (Asus and others will be venturing down this line in 2011), and then there are real tablet PC's which are convertible notebooks like the HP TM2/Elitebook, Fujitsu Notebooks, and Lenovo X201T. All of these devices appeal to different people.

I personally just scored an HP Touchsmart2. It's not the best convertible tablet out there in terms of build quality (especially the LCD quality), but it has a great feature set. It has switchable graphics with the Radeon 5450 and Intel GMA graphics, which makes it capable of some light gaming (I even have Black Ops running somewhat acceptably on it) and includes a Wacom penabled digitizer and a multitouch capacitive digitizer. Combined with a Core i5, four gigs o ram and a 500GB hard drive, it's something I can do light graphic design/illustration work on too.

January is never a great time to buy anything unless you're looking for deals. CES starts soon and there will be a ton of new products launching this Spring. I'm thrilled with my purchase, but it's definitely a niche/specific needs sort of tool. If you don't need all of these functions you can get a more powerful notebook in the same price range. I opted for the TM2 because it's literally the only machine on the market that fits all of my needs, although it does not excel in any specific area.

I do adore it though :)

Basically:

Tablets (iPad/Android): Great devices (especially the iPad) for consuming media and playing casual games.
Slates PC's: Young and unproven market with a lot of potential but practically no momentum.
Tablet PC's: Proven niche market combining power and utility you won't find in the previous categories.

I got an "El cheapo" Chinese Android tablet a couple of months ago and even though it functioned fine, after getting over the initital "new gagdet fun" period, I always found myself either grabbing my laptop, or my smartphone. I just can't find a use/the added value for a tablet atm to go wth my 13 inch laptop and 4,3 inch smartphone.

A little off topic( ok a lot), but does anyone know of any free registry clean up software. Actually free and not a free scan with a required update to fix anything? My computer is giving me a lot of shit right now. I can't even run Zbrush because it says It can't find my license server dll. Pixologic doesn't know how to fix it, but the forums had a method that didn't work for me....

CCleaner has always done the job for me. Run it several times to clear up the loose ends each run creates.

I've always said I wouldn't buy some tablet, because "it's a expensive and big cellphone". I got one from a "High Stakes-like" competition and was happy about it, it cost me nothing. So, after a month of having a Galaxy Tab GT-P1000, I have to say it's really good for me, since I travel monthly, I take almost 9 hours to get from one point to the other, so having a Tablet is pretty handy when looking for new e-mails, browsing the net and seeing movies. BUT, (yes, there's a but)when I'm "stuck" for a month, I don't have much use for it, I play some games, draw something in AutoCAD, browse the net in some boring classes...and that's pretty much it.

Long story short, it's not a bad thing, mind you, but it's a more of a gadget than a necessary thing. If it was cheaper, yes, maybe I would buy it, as it can be your phone, but it's around 400 eur in Portugal.
