Not to me mate. I am quite disappointed with this to honest. I like to have my control. I can expect this from games like Star Ocean, Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery....etc but not from Final Fantasy. Xii Took control out completely and this one goes and does this :S

Well yea, traditional turn based games are all but dead now, and anyone who tries "sakaguchi" gets the shit kicked out of their games.

I can't see the FF series going back to the old school ATB gameplay that it used to be so well known for, too bad really.

Saying that I have played the FF13 demo and its not so bad, you are way too busy with one character to beable to control 3, I still get the feeling that the gameplay will become very tedious by the end of the game though.

Were BD and LO actually slammed for their combat systems though? I thought LO had excellent combat, it was just that the stuff around it was pretty awkward. Stealth bits and.. falling into pits and.. looking for keycards and.. god, I wanna rip my clothes apart just thinking about it.

Oh yeah and the insanely melodramatic story delivered in cutscenes where the editor was like "I could edit this, or.. not. Okay I won't.".

Persona 4's combat is slightly better paced, but the systems are of comparable depth. I really think most reviewers were just put off by the context LO's battles were presented in. At least that's my gripe with it, but the combat still had me trucking through it to the very Turtles-esque ending where they somehow found a loophole in their own logic within the span of a final battle.

Nah many reviewers complained that the combat was dated (which it was) but that was kind of the point, but it still got bad reviews because of it.

The only problem with the stealth bit and puzzle aspects which you mention were the fact that you still had random fights during those phases which became incredibly irritating, yes it was bad game design, however these parts were fairly small in number across the whole game and the only one that I remember with anykind of dislike was the mansion part.

Persona 4 had two features in its game play you could take each turn across all characters or set it so the other two characters took their own turn (which from what i remember was the default setting), so depending on who you ask criticism could be different depending on how they played it.

FF13 plays out similarly to one of the options you get in Persona 4, I do agree with Alimo that it is short sighted to not add a slower take turn per character option though, at least for older fans of the series that remember how 7-10 played, but SE have pretty much said before that FF games are about the new generation on JRPG fans not the ones that made the series a success.

I do agree that turn based is turning away quite a few gamers but the thing is FF is moving so much away from its roots and loosing what made it appeal to million before.

FF7 sold MILLIONs and it had turn based combat, FF12 sold Millions but less than FF7 anyway. They think they are making it appeal more to the mainstream but they are lossing traditional gamers too which kind of renders the process pointless.

While I can in turn appreciate appreciation for classic turn based combat (hey, that could be mistaken for a palindrom by.. people who don't know what that is) I'm more excited about learning new combat systems with each RPG I play. I am very, very excited about Final Fantasy XIII and I reckon the combat looks awesome.

If you really like turn based stuff though there is an extensive back catalogue of great RPGs to play. Sure some of them look a bit rough nowadays, but if you play them for their gameplay you can still enjoy hundreds of hours of the kind of RPG combat you prefer. I think it would be rather awkward if the series synonymous with JRPG didn't keep attempting new challenges.
