2009-09-09 12:55:25 WLAN problem :|

My parents bought laptop and it works fine otherwise but WLAN is weird.

You can use Firefox etc. to browse internet and all that but suddenly it just stops to open new pages. No matter if I use Firefox or IE it just randomly stops opening new sites. It can take from 5 minutes to couple hours before it does this. When it does this I can still use Thunderbird to check mails, Download files and use Windows update.

I'll try to see if I can take firewall off from the WLAN next. I kinda assume it has something to do with the port 80 or what ever it's what is used for web browsing.

Any ideas what to do next? I'll report back once I have tried the firewall settings. It's just so time consuming to test this problem since it's so random.

Is this just in your home or in other WiFi spots as well?

I had a similar problem with my home setup and it was a setting on the router (Speedtouch 585i) called "Web Browsing Interception" which would basically stop everything coming through to check if it was a webpage. Once it was disabled everything worked great.

Do you know ping? Can you ping a website such as yahoo.com while this is going on?

If there's indeed such an option as Slabs suggests that would be seem to be the obvious answer, but you seem to suggest it's only happened with the laptop, so if any other computers in the same network have no problems it wouldn't seem likely.

You should try a ping anyways as Lebato suggests. Other things to try is setting (just) the dns manually on the wlan interface of the laptop. What it also could be is a reauthentication timer of the WPA security that is screwing things up every time it reauthenticates. I've seen strange behaviour coming from that as well. Try (temporarily) disabling the WPA security and see what it does (if it's being used at all).

A final thing to suggest is to de-install the wlan drivers on the laptop and install the latest.

I haven't been able to try any other WiFi spot yet. I'll check the settings of my router next. My other PC's doesn't have this problems but those are wired connections.

About the ping command. I can ping just fine to yahoo.com even when there is problems with my web browsers.

Ah yeah I didn't think about security, I'll see if disabling it helps. I did install newest drives to the laptop but if nothing else helps I'll try the reinstalling. My router is pretty old and does have some other problems too. Like if I use the firewall and exceed the DL speed of 1.3MB/s the router reboots :p maybe it's time to get new shiny router. I still want to try get this one working, routers are quite expensive.

I'll have time to test more tomorrow. Thanks for the help!
