2007-05-26 16:00:40 GTA IV DEMO Dissected - Press L1 to open trunk, X to stuff body inside

We sent three gaming editors to glimpse the most anticipated game in history. Here's what they saw

http://www.gamesradar.com/us/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?sectionId=1006&articleId=2007052515371820069&releaseId=20060313153735796095

It was a hotel room in San Francisco, very much like thousands of others, but with one big difference: This hotel room contained three GamesRadar editors, two representatives from Rockstar, and one Xbox 360 debug unit running a demo version of Grand Theft Auto IV. Which made it the best hotel room in all of San Francisco. There will be zillions of words written about the game in the coming months, but we thought we'd start by letting you listen in to our post-rapture brain dump.

quotes:

Charlie Barratt, Xbox 360 Editor: Before the camera pulled back, we were staring at Niko's face - and only Niko's face - for what felt like 10 minutes. And yet I was fascinated that entire time, watching him shift in place slightly, glance casually around and move his facial muscles. Quite a departure from the melted polygon of a head we've seen in other GTA protagonists.

Charlie: You're right. They're so solid that when Niko bumped into one on the sidewalk, it knocked him a little off balance. And then I loved how Niko took one last look over his shoulder at the annoyance before continuing his walk.

Mikel: They gave the same answer when I asked about climbing, right after when Niko hoisted himself up the rungs on a telephone pole to get a bird's-eye view of the neighborhood. The question was something along the lines of, "How far are you going to take this? Will we be able to climb up the sides of buildings?" And they said, "We'll show you that later." Sounded like a vague confirmation to me.

In spite of that, there wasn't any further violence in the demo; once Niko left the car, he just sauntered casually down to the waterfront and pulled out a cell phone. This was one place where we got to see how realistically Niko will react to terrain - while he walked through the gravel leading up to the docks, it made crunchy gravel noises; when he'd walk across a grate, it clank-thumped like someone walking across metal.

Here, he walked up to a short ledge and - once he got close enough - automatically rested one of his feet on it as he made a call to a buddy.

Eric: I loved that foot thing. I've been squawking about the animations looking unnatural in the PS2 series for ages. I love that the new stuff looks so realistic - it bodes well for all of the other physics-related stuff in the game as well, like car crashes.

Eric: Yep. I also dig like that it was Niko making the call rather than the other way around. That implies the game might be even more free-form than usual.

Okay, let's sum it up: far grittier and more realistic than ever before, with a smaller, yet more detailed city and improved everything. With that in mind, what would it take to keep you from playing this thing? I'm thinking it would take a sperm whale covered in rubber cement falling out of the sky and landing on me. Twice.

Mikel: I'm going to go with being torn apart by wild dogs. Or carjacked and shot by wild dogs, thereby giving me some sort of horrible fear complex about urban crime, and also dogs.

Charlie: Nothing. Death, maybe? Nah... not even that. If the game delivers on half of what it promises, I will be consumed by it. Happily.

Mikel: Agreed. I don't like to kiss a game's ass before I even get to touch it, but what I've seen so far makes me really want to play it. October can't get here soon enough.

Ah, after those abmismal shots a few days ago, this preview has made me much more hopeful.

I haven't played any of the GTA games much before, too over-the-top mindless violence with no thought of consequence for my tastes. But this sounds very intruiging.

Right were I want my next-gen free roaming action adventure game to be.

SOO many good games this year!

Grand Theft Auto IV will bring real-time car trunk interaction physics to the world of GTA, according to a pop-up command glimpsed during a demo of the astoundingly next-generation game.

The witnesses to this revelation? Official Xbox Magazine, who were "accidentally" able to see a contextual command prompt that popped up while their Rockstar guide stood near a car's trunk, reading something along the lines of "Press LB to open trunk."

We say "accidentally" because Rockstar are such perfectionists that there's no way it was really an accident. It'd certainly work, enabling you to stow contraband, stash bodies for disposal or perhaps even leap in yourself to trail a target from extremely close distance. And it's just another indication of the staggering depth of GTA IV, beyond even the things we've already seen with our own eyes.

he's not allowed anywhere near take 2 and the companies within (rockstar) why do you think he suddenly moved onto microsoft and the "hyperviolent" (his words not mine) halo series. he cant do jack (pun intended) to rockstar so he's taking his bitching elsewhere.

Wait, they've been showing the 360 version to the press so far. So, if OXM saw it how did they see the 360 version automatically have LB buttons? :|
