im still not happy about the change in gameplay and style, just like i hated how resi 4 changed everything about resigned evil. it was resident evil in name alone, and i feel this will be the same. if it wasnt for the name plastered on the box it could be a completely new IP. BUT, there are features i like the sound of, but it sounds a bit like a 3D brawler. "the bouncer" style. which would suck quite a lot if it went in that direction, but interaction, lightling and the idea of grusome executions quite frankly turns me on *purrrr*

Fortunately, Resident Evil 4 was easily the best Resident Evil game of the series.

if you like resident evil with very little survival or horror, then yes, it is the best in the series. they turned a classic, intense series into a full blow action fest that removed key elements from the game. thats not resident evil, no matter how you look at it. it may be a damn fine action game. but resident evil it is not. except for the inclusion of leon kennedy, its not resident evil.

"with very little survival.."
Care to explain this? Are you saying that it was simply too easy?
"..or horror"
There maybe weren't as many cheap, jump-through-a-window scares as in previous RE games, but I wouldn't say there was very little horror. I guess this is pretty subjective. For me, getting my head chainsawed off was pretty damn horrifying :P
"they turned a classic, intense series into a full blow action fest that removed key elements from the game"
What key elements do you speak of? The horrible controls? The downright, indisputably retarded puzzles?
Ah well...maybe you're right. If the name and Leon Kennedy is all RE4 shares with its predecessors, then great! They can keep everything else and hopefully won't taint RE5.

Wow.
Thats is, strangely, exactly the direction i thought action games this gen would be going. Weird.
I should be a game designer! ;)

Good god can IGN EVER keep their promises? They promised new Conviction details today including talks about the lighting and we got nothing.
They work much better when they don't promise anything.

I like the fact they are making some effort in the lighting -- one of the 2 most neglected parts of next gen games that make them... next gen. They really aren't doing anything "new" but are tieing together quite a few techniques at high qualities. Ambient Occlusion maps have been used in a number of games (PGR3, soon Crysis), but it looks like they are putting them to good use. The multiple spotlights for various soft/self shadows sounds a lot like Variance Shadow Maps which is being used in Little Big Planet and Forza Motorsport 2 -- very cool technology, and one the 360 should handle well. The "bouncing" light is indirect lighting, aka "global illumination". They are probably using SH for it. The tech shots they show all look OUTSTANDING. With all 3 technologies together you get better control over ambient light as well as per-pixel occlusion -- one of the biggest issues in most games that make them look "flat" -- quality self shadowing and soft shadows, and a sense of the world being "solid" and interactive via the indirect lighting (only 'from' non-animating world geometry I wonder?) ATI has a really nice video on using current techniques to get "GI" on current GPUs and UBI Montreal has basically taken the core of their lectures -- AO, VSM, SH -- and adapted them. Nice job Ubi!
The other area next gen games look last gen is Animation... it looks like Ubi is leveraging all their research and development from AC. COOL is all I can say.
I can see now why MS tied this game up as an exclusive. Too bad it is coming this year :| This game is sounding good enough to get the "Gears of War" treatment and be MS's BIG 2008 title. It sounds aggressive, challenging the issues games face, yet building on a popular franchise, taking it out of its confining gameplay/themes and giving it a full Next Gen treatment, and are recreating a franchise into something worthy of being an exclusive must have. I must say I am impressed with their ambition and willingness to take a risk at the prospect of great reward.

Ok, I'm going to translate this one equation to layman's terms so you all can understand it. It's simple Gemetric Statistical Calculus, nothing out of this world.

As you can see before the "=" sign, you are basically solving the questions "why me?"
The (o, p) can be substituted by numbers, so the question now is "Why me again?" or "why me for the fifth time?!!?" (depending on the number)
And then the square root. L stands for loser(s)
"2 losers + 1" basically means 3 losers, divide that by 4 pi.
So, it's saying "3 losers over 4 pi" which means every loser gets ~1.3 pies. (this is actually quite unusual because losers mostly get no pie at all, so this is a special equation as you can tell)
Then the other parenthesis say (l-m), in other words, "loser minus me" and the "loser + me"........don't worry about this part, it just cancels out! Why else do you think the "!" sign is there?
And then you take the squre root of that and then you have to PM the losers and ask them "why did I get no pie for the fifth time!" and then if you get a reply starting with "cos" it means you have the right answer. It basically tells you if you are a loser or what.............
So it's pretty much like that.
EDIT: I got a reply and it seems like the pie was actually poisoned, so it seems that's the reason I got no pie and losers got so much of it.

Hmmmm I guess that is "one" way to solve a derivative Lebato... but yes, these are derivatives (if you have had Calculus the form is familiar), albeit they are geometric focused and more difficult than you would see in Calculus A or B for the most part. I had Calculus in High School and College, but it kind of bored me. If I had known it was useful for games and could have landed me a job in the industry it may have held my attention more! :P At B3D one of the developers explained SH at an "artist" level and they are not overly complicated in the approach (precomputed wavelets) as it is really just the use of trig with geometry.
The interesting thing is that real ray tracing as well as radiosity are simpler equations deemed trivial. The problem of course is that while trivial from a mathmatical perspective they are computationally intense.
Btw kids, if you want to be in the game industry focus on your maths. Being able to interact with advanced Calc as well as Physics, in hand with strong C language(s) knowledge, will take you very far. If you can pair that with mad 3D art skills you are a very valuable asset if you have leadership skills and are a hard worker.
