Microsoft released this trailer showing the three main cities of Lost Odyssey. It's in fact nothing more than more or less unrelated cutscenes of the game cut and assembled, without the music. Strange choice.

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/785/785924p1.ht...

Perhaps the most interesting part of Sakaguchi's comments centered on the battle system. According to the article, Lost Odyssey will employ a wall system which will require players to ensure that the front guards protect the rear. Enemies will use these formations as well and Mistwalker plans to add an "analog trigger system for physical attacks" to breech the walls.
He also went on to say that the latest build of Lost Odyssey is far enough along that the team has gone into the balancing and tuning portion of development. The load times are being reduced so that they are becoming less noticeable as well.
Confused by what they mean by the wall system, but I've got faith :) Do they mean you'll probably be surrounded by enemies and will need to move the analog stick in a specific direction to physically hit the enemy?

Sounds like you have to put your team in the proper formation to protect physically weaker members (magic users and the like). The enemy will employ similar tactics so you can't just beat the crap out of the tankers in front because the spellcasters behind will just keep healing them, so you break through and stab them in their weak guts.

Yes i would say slabs is right, which means nothing new as JPRG's have been doing this for a long time.

Moving characters to the rear for less damage, and abilities such as defend and guard.

I would also imagine you could use magic based attacks without having to break through the guards.

If it's in the final stages, it could end up being released early .. :)

The Way I understand it now Optimus is perhaps that This time and for the first time I might add in a JRPG the enemies formation will probably be a sort of a circle around your party and you have to make sure that the back of some of your characters is covered by a member of your party i.e. back to back. I very much like this concept, it certainly will add a lot in terms of startegy and I AM SO GLAD, the combat is still Turn Based. The FF12 combat system was boring to death. Cant Wait! I am sure all the goodness is saved for this year's E3 and TGS

Also, I bought the new EGM Magazine today, the one with Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Interview in it (June 2007)

Here is how Mr. Sakaguchi described Kaim Argonar:
(taken from the interview/article)

"I wanted to portray a normal man with real emotions," Sakaguchi says.
"Kaim has lived for 1000 years, so you'd think that he's seen so much that he'd be indifferent to things around him. But when he cries, he cries over the most mundane of things, just like we do."

Well, at least Lost Odyssey should look damn good when its leading man sheds a tear, as the game uses the same tech that powers Gears of War. Cross your fingers it plays that well, too (Mistwalker still hasn't revealed much about Lost Odyssey's battle-system).

Gamasutra has a big interview with one of Lost Odyssey's producers. It has lots one the business framework in game making in Japan today but also some stuff on Lost Odyssey. That part:

Gamasutra: And good distribution. But that aside, how has work been going on Lost Odyssey?

RN: It's going really well. There were some troubles, but it's all fixed now, and it's going very well. We're finishing up the content-side. The biggest task is content creation for that kind of game. And it’s almost done - we're satisfied with the result, and it's going to come out this year. We have a few more months, so we still have time to polish things.

Gamasutra: What is your direct involvement?

RN: I run the company, and we have director Daisuke Fukugawa from Square Enix. He worked on Legend of Mana. We also have production managers to do content production. In terms of what they’re making, I am kind of hands-off. I try not to say much about what they are making, so all I am doing now is project management. They tend to add more and more stuff. It's fine if they feel it’s important, but at the same time, if it really is important, they have to think of ways to cut out things that are less important and lower priority. Those kinds of things. I feel like I'm still educating the staff. It's 120 people, so a lot of things happen.

Gamasutra: Do you have any examples of things you needed to cut?

RN: We had 400 levels we had to make, so some had to be cut to make others better. Characters are fine. We've got about 300 characters. There's a little more than seven hours of real-time cutscenes. We determine priority: there are A Cutscenes, B Cutscenes, and C Cutscenes. There were too many A Cutscenes - the ones where we make them really good. We had to reduce the number of A Cutscenes and make more B Cutscenes.

Gamasutra: Are they all real-time?

RN: Out of those seven hours, one hour is prerendered, and six hours are real-time. They don't really look different, though, it’s almost the same. The prerendered scenes are for better lighting and for more visual effects like explosions or when a tower falls down. We needed prerendering for those scenes, but characters look almost the same.

Gamasutra: I didn't know that it was level-based, or did you mean scenarios?

RN: We had about 400 locations, I mean.

Gamasutra: How long has it been in actual production development?

RN: Sakaguchi started discussions in late 2003, but actual production started in early 2004. Over three years ago.

Gamasutra: That was well before the technology was ready.

RN: Yeah.

What I found most interesting is how they released a demo before Gears of War was out (a demo they finished back in June) with an unfinished UE3 engine if that isn't badass I don't know what is :D
