Microsoft released this trailer showing the three main cities of Lost Odyssey. It's in fact nothing more than more or less unrelated cutscenes of the game cut and assembled, without the music. Strange choice.

Quotes:

Based on the gameplay demo we just received at E3, we believe it can capture the same fans. Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi's beloved style and imagination are obvious. Fantasy and technology sat side by side in every scene. The first battle took place on top of a speeding cyberpunk locomotive with mechanical monsters, but the group's female mage destroyed them with a glorious meteor shower straight from the heavens. Later, a massive boss made of earth and molten rock towered over our puny heroes, but they defeated him with a well placed gun shot.

Lost Odyssey isn't a throwback, though. While fighting is turn-based and you watch a loading screen each time you encounter a monster, the combat includes some innovative touches. Every time you launch a physical attack, you engage in a timing minigame to land the perfect hit. The environment can play a role, too. When our party killed that volcanic beast, they did it by consistently shooting away at a nearby crane. When their bullets finally broke through the metal, the crane dropped a load of explosive missiles on the boss's head.

But the way in which Lost Odyssey truly sets itself apart from older RPGs is with its spectacularly cinematic look. The graphics are gorgeous, thanks to the power of the Unreal Engine, but it's the subtler touches that bring the screen alive. During battle, dramatic moments will be highlighted with inset panels - like a comic book - so you can see a character's face up close while still keeping an eye on the bigger picture. Party members don't simply stand still waiting for their moment to attack, either; they shift in place, checking their armor and rummaging through their pockets. And the epic cut scenes we watched rival anything in Final Fantasy, but they also include the occasional Gears of War shaky cam, making the action feel more real and less staged.

Finally, we confirmed that Lost Odyssey will include downloadable content after its release. By the time Final Fantasy XIII hits shelves, will we even need it?

Haha thats really cool right there and the part about the environment coming into play I love that concept. I like the timing stuff sorta like in Final Fantasy 8.

but again "they shift in place, checking their armor and rummaging through their pockets." lol pretty interesting stuff. I like this preview a lot more than some of the others I've read you'd think they'd be happy a game like this is showing up on the Xbox 360, but they're all like "pretty much final fantasy new coat of paint" You'd think they would EXPECT a game similar to final fantasy from the creator of the series.

Same as with blue Dragon unless you want a boring fighting system like the one in Final Fantasy XII. Turn Based is what JRPGs are all about and Im glad sakaguchi is sticking to this with all his games! :)

where did I take a knock at turn-based in my quote? Yeah, that's right, I didn't. I don't have a problem with TB, but they should be able to do all that(exploring to battle) w/o a loading screen by now.

When did I ever say you took a knock at it ????? My comment ended with a smiley meaning I wasnt blaming you for anything!
what's the deal with everyone around here jumping out on me everytime I mention something about jrpgs and turn based :| It's getting kinda annoying I must say. I dont usually complain but I am sorry I had to say this.

I played Blue Dragon, and while I tried to like it, and I do like some things, the same holds true for me. Turn based = crap/nonsense. I really do wish I liked these kind of games though because they are clearly top notch. Ah well.

Fair enough lebato but The turn based combat turns better when you progress through the game a lot more. at the start it's always very simple and looks shallow YES but when you progress, there's so much depth to be had :)

Aint that the truth. If most jrpgs that are turnbased remained as blisteringly simple as it is in the opening parts of the game I'd never play them.

It still the same thing though. I especially hate being hit without being able to do anything at all, and to me "defending" is a waste of turn. Corporals were nice, but after the second time, I just want to skip him.

Strangely enough, I like turn based strategy games. Civilization for example. Somehow, that makes more sense to me.

Lost Odyssey still has 6 months of development left, but the good thing is, according to Mr. Sakaguchi, everything is going smoothly so far, which is great. :)

What the LO Trailer gave me was the great feeling of what a powerful Story can do to you. To me, it captured that kind of human emotion that I have always longed for to experience in a game one day, not just when it comes to JRPGs. Kiyoshi Shigematsu + Sakaguchi are like the Power Duo! XD

Also, I played the Blue Dragon demo and I loved it!!! I finished the “Ancient Ruins-Forest” stage and then, I played the very beginning of the Fortress (I would have loved to play more of it but I didn't want to get spoiled, and people have been telling me that there is somewhat of a big spoiler there)...I am able to wait until next month! :D

@dcdelgado: Thanks for the Lost Odyssey Preview.

PS: ...and I am still trying to figure out who voices Kaim Argonar...
