2007-06-04 23:06:40 Halo 3 speculation for people that have read ghosts of onyx to its end.
Alright since I assume everyone in this thread has read ghosts of the onyx you guys remember that one of the problems that the team of spartans along with dr halsey and mendez were presented with while on the interior of the forerunner structure inside onyx were to either go rescue team katana or go to the core of the onyx and try to recover whatever new technology they could find and then attempt escape aboard the UNSC Prowler Dusk and bring the technology back to Earth as it could be key to saving billions of lives and turning the tide of the war.
Now knowing the Onyx is referred to as the Shield World and the trillions of sentinels that inhabit the planet that were giving so many ships trouble to enter the Onyx planet had some pretty good shields do you guys suspect that the bubble shields which are now in Halo 3 was technology that was found inside the shield world by the people inside. Don't the Bubble shields kinda fit the description of the Sentinels that were attacking everyone on Onyx?
People inside Onyx's Shield World :
Spartan IIs - Kelly, Linda and Fred from Blue Team
Spartan IIIs from Gamma Company Team Sabre - Ash, Mark, Olivia
Spartan IIIs from Beta Company Tom and Lucy
Spartan IIIs from Gamma Company Team Katana - 5 of them are trapped inside Sarcophogi like cryo pods found inside the Forerunner structore on Onyx
3 Unknowns trapped in the other 3 Cryo Pods.
Dr. Halsey and Chief Mendez.
Reading how Ghosts of the Onyx went there is no way in hell they can possibly call Halo 3 any sort of completion without Master Chief having set foot on the Onyx Planet and you guys see that black planet in the background in the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta? I believe that circular Black thing they're showing is Planet Onyx aka where the Shield World is located.
The Bubble Shield to me I definitely think is technology from the Shield World it fits perfectly. The Bubble Shield I think is a Slipspace Bubble which is why I think it's impenetrable to almost any weapon that fires at it.
Like Dr. Halsey said while they were inside the Shield World.
"I believe the sphere resides in the center of the planet, encapsulated and protected by a Slipspace bubble of compressed dimensionality" The only reason the slipspace bubble doesn't last as long on the portable one that Master Chief will use is because its portable and unlike the one covering the small sphere which is the gigantic shield world it isn't being powered by an entire planet.
Dr. Halsey said "I see. You do understand that while externally, this space may only be a few meters in diameter within the center of Onyx, internally, its compressed dimensionality gives it a surface area many times the surface of the Earth"
She said that in response to the Spartans as they suggested they search the entire planet for any forerunner technologies they could find and bring them back to Earth.
So this place that is so much bigger than earth is tiny on the outside, but gigantic on the inside and only way to enter or exit is if a slipspace field is open. I think the Spartan Laser can break the defenses of the Bubble Shield right? Do you guys think that was found on the Shield World? To get out they'll need something that can crack Slipspace fields.
On snowbound when you go inside one of those structures there are more shields you can't shoot through so I think with all these shield references it makes sense that Master Chief will be on the Onyx in Halo 3 at some point or maybe the other spartans will get off without his help?
The shield drainer kinda looks like one of the Sentinels too doesn't it? It also sounded like the Sentinels had a plasma redirect ability as well think there will be such a thing in Halo 3?
Actually the bubble shield doesn't fit the description of the sentinels I guess, but the bubble shield potentially being from Onyx makes sense I think.

I'm not sure of the timelines but I think the events on Onyx and those of Halo 3 will be very close indeed, definitely not enough time to analyse and reconfigure newly found forerunner tech.
I think the Bubble Shield is reverse engineered from the Covenant Shield Doors to be honest as Slipspace would mean the inside of the bubble would certainly not be unaffected, either in location or physical properties.
The Ark could well be a direct link to the Onyx shield world, as Earth itself most certainly isn't a shield world. I just hope Chief doesn't go down the same way Kurt did, as valiant as he was.

Yeah,Kurt was THE man !.I`m hoping that Bungie will include alot more references from the book in Halo 3 because I love the idea of fighting alongside other spartans!.I want to see what Dr Halsey looks like. The only one point that I wish to make,is that when you look at the advertising for Halo and read the rear cover,it clearly states that you are the `last` surviving spartan soldier!.Why would Bungie do that?.I think that because the internet is rife with rumours of Halo 3 supporting some form of co-op,maybe the chief will end up meeting up with Fred and the guys perhaps?.Maybe they left out co-op play in past games because it wasn`t ready to be tied in with the book etc?.I think that during Halo 3`s cutscenes, you will get to see other spartan soldiers,(and if one of your friends is playing with you, then they will be the other spartan in the cutscene?).Think about it! :0)
Since 1020 Days
2007-06-05 01:23:32
Yea how insane was that!!? Kurt went out in style he was quite an amazing character almost sad he and Master Chief wont get to fight together again. He seemed as if he might've been better than the Chief.
It was so amazing how Kelly ran up to an elite snapped his wrist then elbowed him to the face then twisted around taking his energy sword and then cut through 3 elites with a single swipe or how Will was going hand to hand with 2 hunters as a dozen or so elites watched in shock.
On the topic of the Ark I suspect it might have something to do with the shield world too, but I'm totally dumbfounded as to what it might really be. Could the Ark on Earth be the key to exposing the Shield World to the rest of the Galaxy around it? As in the only possible way the Shield World's defenses can be dropped without being on the inside to make something happen? Maybe the Ark has the ability to translocate people directly in or out of the shield world? Then again if the Ark has an entirely different purpose altogether and its just as cool as the discovery regarding the Onyx then I'm all for it.
For all we know there could be another Micro Dyson Sphere on Earth cause afterall the sentinels on Onyx had to do quite a large amount of unearthing of something and it appears a similar thing has taken place on earth only this time by the covenant. I don't think there is anyway Halo 3 begins and ends without us getting word of other spartans.
From the moment we started getting info from Voro's Covenant ship the Incorruptible we were at Halo 2 and all the events that take place on the Onyx especially when Blue Team arrives on the Onyx should be well after the end of Halo 2. I know for a fact the events in the core room of the Onyx forerunner structure is definitely after Halo 2. For all we know the entire time they were making their move using the stolen cov ship to get deep into zone 67 could've been after halo 2 as well.

My "Ghosts of Onyx" book is coming to me from Amazon. Too bad I live on the other side of Atlantic and it takes the things forever to come here (like 3 weeks). It's kinda hard not to read this thread, but I think I'll manage it somehow.:)
BTW I'm thinking about translating Fall of Reach to Polish in Summer, should be fun experience (though not for readers :P)

Szaromir you're going to enjoy the hell out of this book. It's amazing. The writing is top notch you'll be able to visualize everything the writer is saying in your head perfectly due to how well its presented by the writer. It'll be hard not to be impressed you'll be dying to find out what happens next. The book is really good at getting then holding your attention for extremely periods of time and as the book goes on it gets harder to pull yourself away from it, but don't take my word for it you'll see for yourself :)
I think I read 383 pages in like 2 and a half days or less than that and it wasn't like I was reading 24/7 I just picked 3 to 4 sometime 5 hours where I knew I'd have the time to read uninterrupted and in no time I was done so I guess if I added up the time I will have spent less than 24 hours to read the entire thing.
You're going to care about the characters and everything going on the writer describes things so well that you'll have a proper idea of how exactly a character is feeling at a specific time (right when you're most interested in knowing too the writer never misses a beat) Hell to be honest when they eventually get around to doing the first Halo movie I'd really love for them to touch on all the cool aspects of this book.
The book gives you a lot of different perspectives to view the story from and at certain times when the writer leaves a set of characters you became extremely interested in, they'll switch to another set and initially you'll think oh god this is not going to be as good as the other stuff let me just hurry through this section, but as you read on you'll find yourself now becoming attached to this next group and you'll begin to truly understand the reason for their inclusion. Personally for me right when I thought "man... I'd like to find out whats happening with this group now as things were so tense last time I knew what they were doing" I'm immediately rewarded with what that group is up to.
I also saw some people say this wasn't as good as the previous novels and I'm shocked because if this isn't up to the quality of the previous ones I'd really love to see just how good the others are because this one here has hit movie written all over it.
All I want is for the story in Halo 3 to be close to the quality of this book and they've got themselves another hit.

An answer to fr0sty:
I think they ment that Master Chief believes that he's the last Spartan,he saw all the other Spartans 'die' in the 1st book remember? So I think they mean that he thinks he is the only Spartan alive and at the time that the other Spartans were at Onyx, Halo 2 happened.
It's just speculation but I really hope Halo 3 has stuff from the books in it.
Still got to order Ghost of Onyx.....
Going to do that right now! :-P

Everyone remotely interested in Halo needs to get this book. It doesn't give you the info you'd want to know on Master Chief the main character of the games, but that isn't the point of this book and I think previous books such as Fall of the Reach and First Strike probably do enough of that.
People that have played the multiplayer beta don't you guys think that black planet they sometimes show in the background is the Onyx?
I not only want Halo 3 to have more stuff from the books I want Halo 3 to include stuff we've never seen from the books and I'm not just talking about the future events that will take place in Halo 3 either I wouldn't mind seeing Master Chief become aware of some information he wasn't aware of prior or atleast get some flashbacks going. This game is a hit waiting to happen with the reservoir of story content they have for the universe there are so many things they could do with this game that would make it big.
Also Halo 2 began October 20th 2552 so everything during and after that in Ghosts of the Onyx is during Halo 2. I'll find out what date is officially after Halo 2.

Ghost of the Onyx ends November 4th 2552 so its quite possibly well after Halo 2 as I don't think the Halo 2 lasted over 14 days.
Oh and silly me the Ark is the only place in which the rest of the Halos can be remote activated to fire, but who knows it might have other significance.

The omitted story cinematics on the Halo 2 LE DVD would have added so much more, especially with the stone tablets talking of the Prophecy.
Oh and I also want to recommend Frederick Pohl's "Gateway" series to everyone, I read the first book a long time ago and recently re-read it and picked up the sequels. Great stuff.
Or it could be a maguffin to ensure a certain amount of "reclaimers" survive, much like the end of Terminator 3.

If the previous books are far superior then I'm dying to see what the others are like, because I think Ghosts of the Onyx is amazing. Hmm thats interesting maybe the Ark is also a place where people could be protected from the fire of the Halo Rings.

If you would like to read Halo 1 from other prespectives you should buy The Flood too. I got all 3 of them, they had a special box at the bookstore =D
I'm getting Ghost of Onyx between now and 6 days.

After reading Onyx, I can say that it was an interesting book, but it didn't reach the level of intensity that Reach and First Strike did. Not having John in it was a disappointing as well.
As far as how much of this goes to Halo 3, I think we'll see very little. The books have been more of an after thought for the longest time. Sure its taking place in the Halo universe, but I'm sure the main game will be self reliant, as I'm sure a large part of the Halo fanbase doesn't read every book.
For those who do there will probably be some "Oh, hey that makes more sense," moments, but I doubt it'll go beyond that. Introducing the other Spartans and teams now seems a bit strange. I would enjoy it, but I don't think an introduction this late would be plausible.
Most likely they'll be trapped in Onyx till the end of Halo 3, and then they'll get a book set afterwards. Man, I'd like to be wrong here. It'd be awesome to see a dedicated group of familiar Spartans taking it to the Covenant.

John was in it he just wasn't in it a lot.
Phaethon Halo 3 absolutely HAS to involve the Onyx if its to be any sort of completion to John's Story. He has to see the other Spartans atleast one more time. As a matter of fact I wouldn't mind an epic battle taking place within the Shield World.
I get reach and first strike tomorrow. I actually support the decision to not concentrate on John too much in this book. This other story had to be told and it would've been interrupted by Spartan 117 fan service I think.

Wouldn't fanservice qualify as giving everyone exactly what they expect? Concentrating only on popular characters in the Halo Universe. I don't know I just don't classify ghosts of the onyx as fanservice. The book itself is sorta in a way meant for that purpose, but the book itself I think strayed away from what everyone expected.
