The screens looks the same to me but image quality is vastly improved over Beta. That's how I'd like the final game (MP) to look like - very clean graphical style of Beta needs to have very clean image, otherwise it's not appealing.

He doesn't have his helmet missing, it's just another type of helmet. That one is a different Spartan armour and was used in the Ghosts of Onyx novel.

The idea that they deliberately downgraded the beta to lower people expectations is a bit too far fetched I think. The screens of Shine show of the atmospherics capability of the engine with a definite heat haze effect going on which makes it a lot more impressive. There is obviously less scope for using that on a lot of the other maps. In fact disabling the atmospherics was a design choice.

Perhaps they switched on for that map to show off the engine and because it's influenced gameplay in the way they intended as opposed to the "clarity" they sought with the other maps. Kind of like Backwash from Halo 2 and the fog.

It's Mjolnir with different helmet. SPI did not look like that (basing on book cover and some descriptions in the novel).

I seriously can't wait to see Halo 3 singleplayer :)
Me either, just 'cause I enjoy pain and I look forward to the insane arguments that are coming.. just around the corner. Really.. can't wait. There have been some ridiculous claims made concerning this single player mode in this game -- claims that are justified by Frankie's ability to spin the visual clarity of the beta. What was that again? Single player's graphics are too busy for MP? I think I can handle it man!

Of course considering people seem to think that this looks much better than the beta (which.. it doesn't, it looks slightly better though) than I guess it won't be too hard to impress.

I can't believe Bungie spent 2 years developing an engine that doesn't support tiling..and there's no point tiling if you're not doing some form of AA.
Not really so hard to believe.. especially considering there are leftover bugs/exploits from Halo 2. Seems more like an engine upgrade than starting from scratch.

Upgrade of the Halo 2 engine? Hmmm I don't buy that. I think there is enough new stuff in there to convince me it's a new engine at least.

Bungie did a presentation on HDR a long while ago (post Halo 2 though) might have to re-read it see if I can get any hints there. I still think they'd be mental to not have a tiled renderer at this stage.

New stuff doesn't mean they started from scratch.. though it's no good reason not to include tiling support either. I just think when there are specific bugs (like BXR) making their way into Halo 3, it seems to suggest that they're doing a lot of things in a very similar fashion to how they used to -- sharing code from old projects or not.

I'm not really bashing the engine's design from the perspective of visuals here.. but stuff like Double Shot and BXR really bug me. I guess I just meant -- nothing surprises me -- when they've built an engine for two years that still has remnants of Halo 2 exploits in it. They talk about how they can't go overboard w/ the MP visuals because it will upset their little game of chess -- and well -- with all that talk, they better fix these exploits. I'm pretty sure Battlechess is still chess, but cheating is just out of the question.

Halo 3's visuals can't possibly bother me, because I'm honestly not expecting much more than what we're already seeing. Call me cynical or critical, or call me a skeptic -- but I think my expectations are more grounded in reality.

I'm impressed with these multiplayer screens and the production values in halo's singleplayer have always been amazing which is why halo 3 singleplayer will be stunning.

I think the scale + visuals combination is what will impress people the most about the game. I think that gigantic ship on that map in the desert is only but a taste of things to come. I strongly believe Halo 3 singleplayer is going to impress.

Considering I'm still amazed by a lot of halo 2's cutscenes there is no way Halo 3 wont be impressive. Even if they aren't using enough graphical bells and whistles for people to be satisfied with. If the scale is as impressive as I suspect then its all good. Also in the bungie weekly updates I heard some awesome things about selfshadows and how great it was looking on some plant. Were people impressed with the E3 06 trailer? Well I think Halo 3 single will likely meet or surpass that.

I don't want a Halo that looks like Unreal 3 so I prefer this look and style many times over. I'm quite sure Halo 3 single will match or surpass COD4 in impressiveness.

It's good to shoot for the best possible result, but lets not forget that Halo 2 didn't meet or surpass its initial showing at E3. I'm also not seeing what's so impressive in terms of scale or scope -- we really don't know how large the single player levels are. I assure you it's no Crysis in terms of scale.

Don't take it personally though, I'm partially just playing the devil's advocate here.. I think Halo 3 is going to look and play great.. I just also think that peoples expectations are way out of line.

At half the framerate.. it might match COD4's visuals.

Ho ho ho funny you mention Crysis :P

I couldn't agree more on the reload exploits and I'm at a loss to rationalise while they're still in there. They can't possibly not know about them, so even re-using old code you would think they would have gotten fixed.

I have to say I didn't see a lot of it in the beta. Was it just as easy to do, a little harder?

Perhaps it a generic thing they can't fix, or they don't want to for fear of annoying the MLG fanboys too much. Personally I'd rather see the back of the atomic battle rifes thanks very much. I've been schooling my younger cousin in all things not cool in Halo online. He tried to do a superbounce at my house on the weekend and I almost slapped him!

I didn't even really attempt BXR in the beta deft.. but I know it's there. Not sure if it's harder to use or not. In my Halo 2 experience cheating was only a widespread problem when the standby glitch was a serious issue. I quit before stuff like "Double Shot" became more common/widespread.. but I'm not even sure you'd witness those things often on XBL in Halo 2.

There are plenty of videos on youtube of various glitches and "exploits" for the Halo 3 beta. I hope they pay serious attention to this stuff. Frankie got pretty defensive of their testers not too long ago -- something about how they make things like BXR look pedestrian.. but if that's the case, why did it even make it into the beta?

Believe me you do.

After the standby thing got largely negated we had the map hacking /game type modding malarkey where people were editing the configs of the weapons so you could fire the BR without reloading more or less. As the Xbox as a platform was busted wide open by this point, there wasn't an awful lot Bungie could do about it.

Ultimately it's what turned me off the game as it was getting to the point where literally every other game something was up.

Having gotten back into it earlier this year things are a lot better. The Bungie banhammer combined with the cheaters getting bored means it's better, but every now and again you'll come across people using the glitch. I'm not a "great" Halo player but I'm above average so I know how many rounds a BR fires and how long it takes to reload. You can tell.

Have to say, saw none of it in the beta or any direct evidence that it was beyond a couple of dodgy YouTube videos.

COD games are also very much scripted. Events happen in a very set order. Halo 3 will have much more reactive AI as well as a greater number of enemies.

That's not to say COD4 won't of course be a lot of fun. More than one way to skin a cat :P

With that said I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm optimistic Halo 3 will look better than it as I've got nothing but blind faith to base that notion on. What IW are pushing out at 1080p and 60fps is pretty unbelievable.

And we've seen some "modding" already in Gears of War. That's one of the things I often bitch about when it comes to the Live platform. MS insists that they're offering a secure service for developers to use, and that it's one of the potential perks of "Windows Live." I'll believe that when I see it. There has to be something they can do about it.
COD games are also very much scripted. Events happen in a very set order. Halo 3 will have much more reactive AI as well as a greater number of enemies.
That's sorta assuming that COD4 will be just like COD2. I'm not about to make that assumption just yet. When it comes to scale, we actually know very little about Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4.
Have to say, saw none of it in the beta or any direct evidence that it was beyond a couple of dodgy YouTube videos.
What's so dodgy about those videos? They seem pretty legit to me..

Regardless, I still think that peoples expectations for this game are a little ridiculous. The fact that people keep pointing to the E3 debut trailer really strikes me as a bit naive too. How quickly we seem to forget about what Halo 2 initially looked like, compared to the game that was actually released.

I'm not saying that it won't look that good, just that we probably shouldn't assume as much.

LOL Grift, you're dead in that pic. Guess you're not the only one with pink armor in Halo 3.

Were people impressed with the E3 06 trailer? Well I think Halo 3 single will likely meet or surpass that.
The scale will be impressive enough and why do people always mention crysis. I don't even rate those devs in the same league. Any dev of similar talent can target those specs and make one of the most incredible looking games possible. So maybe I'm not surprised by what they are achieving giving the unbelievable specs the game is made to run on.

I know it looks godlike, it looks downright amazing, but with the hardware that game is built to run on wouldn't it be a damn shame if it didn't? What if Bungie had similar specs to work with like Crytek does? Said it before I'll say it again i'm far more impressed when a developer accomplishes something incredible with a set hardware specification as opposed to having the freedom of just upping the specs if you can't program it to run and look amazing on less.

We don't know exactly how large the levels are, but we have an idea and I'm quite sure it'll be impressive. Its one of bungies main talking points for Halo 3 the scale. They pointed out in the E3 06 trailer everything out there was real geometry in the distance that you could go up to. It wont be as graphically impressive as Crysis, but what makes you think it can't produce a similarly impressive sense of scale? Crysis on that boat? Halo 3 will have no problem matching that in terms of scale of course the graphics wont look as incredible. I don't know whats so special about that jungle other than the incredible graphics that Halo 3 couldn't have a very similar large playground to mess around in be it a location in africa or whatever the hell it is. Not as much geometry, but who cares? I know the 360 the handle can handle a lot of geometry even if it can't do as much as Crysis with the same visual fidelity.

I think Halo 3 in terms of epicness will beat Crysis overall its fucking halo. Crysis is incredible graphicswise, but I don't see why Halo 3 can't have things that are similar in size to some of those creatures or even ships flying overhead going crazy while the battle is going on. When you really think about it Crysis is just a visual masterpiece as it should be. I see no reason why an Xbox 360 title can't impress in terms of scale. I don't even know why Crysis is mentioned or why Halo 3 is even being compared to Crysis.

Crysis is a title that needs to prove itself beyond its incredible graphics and Halo 3 is the third installment to one of the biggest games out there. So crysis can have the incredible dx10 fancy graphics Halo 3 will still be halo 3. It's expected to be big its expected to be epic.

Its funny grift how you wont make assumptions about halo 3 yet and are so willing to make so many assumptions about halo 3. Oh I get it now it literally just hit me with all the comments such as at half the fps it MIGHT match cod4's visuals. You are just trying to piss me or others off to have a bit of fun so I'll end here :)

Regardless, I still think that peoples expectations for this game are a little ridiculous. The fact that people keep pointing to the E3 debut trailer really strikes me as a bit naive too. How quickly we seem to forget about what Halo 2 initially looked like, compared to the game that was actually released.
you also seem to forget the only single player screen that we
