No idea....

Maybe there will be something more this week.

Personally, I'd have given Halo 3 the end of the show. Have some Bungie guys come out and show off some MP stuff. Not everyone at this event will have seen the beta after all. Show off the armor customisation and a new game-mode. Use the equipment in an interesting way to do something goofy and make everyone laugh. Think, hey! That's funny, record a save film, edit it, upload to your fileshare, Show off the Bungie.net integration and how good films can be distributed.

Then if they've got online co-op working (they better!) have someone else on the other side of the stage send an invite and jump in. Introduce the Arbiter this way (I've no idea if he's playable but co-op could have a Marcus/Dom setup looking at the trailer). Show off a very small snippet of gameplay before a cutscene that teases the storyline and then maybe finish with a trailer.

Would have been a more effective demonstration of the game and what it's about, imo.

Did anybody happen to catch this gem of videogame journalism from Gamespot?

"As the trailer wound on, we managed to spot what apparently was a huge new Covenant ground weapon: a large quadraped robot with a massive laser beam, which appeared somewhat similar to the massive Spiderbots that appeared in Supreme Commander."

He must be somebody's nephew or something; I don't see how else he could've gotten that job.

Oh, thats fucking halarious! Its a scarab!

Speaking of Halo, Did anyone else watch "Halo: Arms race". The little short directed by Neill Blomkamp? Its on that Bungie story as well. near the bottom. Real-life as well. God, I got giddy watching it! Its so awesome, and is a perfect hommage Aliens, while being Halo at the same time. Just awesome!

Oh boy....
"much better graphics than in the multiplayer beta. This is what they needed to show people. First time ever I've been wow'ed by Halo's graphics. You'll dig 'em too when you see 'em." Jeff Green from 1up"
http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8253565&public...
"If you’ve got any qualms about the visual fidelity of the single-player game, let’s just put those to rest right off the bat. The segment we saw took place in a lush forest, where tall trees cut off a good deal of the sunlight and moss grew on just about every available surface. The foliage and textures looked excellent, as did the “god rays” that beamed down through gaps in the canopy.

With that, our all-too-brief Halo 3 single-player demo ended, and the lights were brought up. Nearly everyone in attendance agreed that this was the footage that Microsoft should have closed the press conference with, as it surely would have impressed just about everyone in attendance. The game is definitely shaping up nicely, and the single-player campaign looks much better than the multiplayer. We’ll be bringing you more information on Halo 3 later this afternoon, as we’ll be checking out some different elements during our E3 meeting with Microsoft."
from teamxbox. Pretty much straight up gameplay would've done the trick.

Well having just seen the... other big game... actually played at the Sony conference I think Halo 3 would have won on actual gameplay. Bungie knows how to do AI and keep the gunfights interesting.

The trailer really lacked focused. It has some really nice graphic touches here and there (lighting was really nice, as was the water) but the animations left something to be desired at times.

The graphics look fine for SP, but a lot of talk about these 2 elements:

1. Where is the talk about all the features? Coop? 4 player coop? Haze looks very similar in fidelity (if not better in greenery and god rays) and it has 4 player coop. And any new MP modes?

What is making Halo 3 special? Where is the innovation to trend set the industry? At least they could have demoed all their live features... or SOMETHING! Anything! A dev walk through.

2. Besides innovation, the trailer was really... flat for Bungie. Discombobulated to say least. And a lot of 3rd person gameplay elements just randomly slapped together. Even the music wasn't synced well at all. I am not audio expert, but where the ship flew by the camera toward the end the music SHOULD have synced and even had the roaring engines sound... but nothing.

Very anti-climactic.

The years biggest game deserved more screen time and more attention. Very dissappointing. It could have used the CoD4 treatment for sure.

Ps- the POS Weta live trailer thing SUCKED. HORRIBLE, and I mean that. Absolutely horrible. Campy, trashy, stiff, to clean when it should have had more "earthy-ness and grit" and cheesy and cheapo when it needed more quality. What a waste. No wonder the movie got canned -- which sucks because a Halo movie has Transformer / Xmen like potential if done in a similar vein. Just a travesty.

I think the kz trailer was just more impressively put together and they deserve their credit for that, but I don't think during gameplay H3 will outshine it.

I'm not trolling killzone btw keep that in mind people I'm just making an assumption based on all the cool stuff that appear to be in halo plus the new equipment added along with all those vehicles. The battles in Halo 3 will probably be bigger as well judging by what I saw from the killzone vid. The environments in Halo 3 are supposed to be pretty huge.

Adam Sessler said the impression he got from all the fast cutaways in the Halo 3 trailer is that maybe they had something to hide, but after seeing the demonstration he now knows that most definitely isn't the case. He believes it looks better and its what MS should've shown at their press conference.

"What is making Halo 3 special?"

Heh acert that ones easy the halo universe itself and the story is what makes Halo 3 special and different from the other games. I mean we'd have to be crazy not to factor in the story going on in the game as part of what makes it special.

Yes the trailer wasn't what one would expect of such a hugely anticipated game. If this is truly to be the end of the series wouldn't they want to show that in the trailer by doing the best they could with its unveling trailer? I believe I understand why they did what they did though. I think making a fancy trailer for E3 would've set them back and they are in crunch mode (and releasing soon)

That's what everyone who played or saw the game is saying. It's a shame we haven't seeing it. :( It would be nice to know how the game exactly plays.

Halo isn't the only game with a great story. And there have been plenty of games with great stories that fall flat. And I need not mention the Halo 2 SP debacle, so regardless of what you say Bungie isn't bulletproof in this regards.

Now that I think of it, Microsoft Games Studios may have more than 1 game out in 2007 that has a longer and deeper story than Halo. But that isn't the point: If the story is what makes it "special" it is difficult to swallow all the hype about this being the biggest title this year when there are a lot of games marrying great stories with great, innovative gameplay.

So, outside of the story, what makes Halo 3 so special from a gameplay perspective?

The AI, the weapons, the vehicles, the enemies, the allies. It sounds silly to say "everything" but the reason Halo is so popular is because Bungie manage to weave everything together so amazingly well where some developers fall flat.

The AI, the weapons, the vehicles, the enemies, the allies.
So... "We pretty much didn't see any of what I just claimed makes Halo rule, but it will rule based on faith".

Which is why it is completely anti-climactic. If we have to talk about AI -- basically none shown -- and weapons -- again, really nothing new or overly impressive shown -- and so on ... should not fans be asking, "WTF? Why didn't MS and Bungie give us a proper Halo 3 demo?"

A lot of whys, and few answers. And the point, in general, is for an industry leading title to do that: lead the industry, expand the industry, and convert new fans.

All the video did was wet the mouth of the hardcore Halo addicts. They are already buying the game.

So what did this accomplish?

Oh I agree totally. Bungie should be kicking themselves for not getting Halo 3 front and centre, I honestly believe it would have been more impressive than the Killzone 2 gameplay.

I don't think Halo 3 is going to be a bad game btw, just E3 was mishandled for how important the title was.

On the one side HALO3 looks really good to me, but on the other side it also looks really underwhelming. I think the lighting is really good and also the environments like the forest looks really good. I like it how the light shines on the characters. But on the other side you have that underwhelming low poly starships that looks almost exactly like from HALO2. Also these stupid blue plasma explosions looks so lastgen. On the one side there are that excellent character animations like the one where the alien kicks the human away. On the other side there are those totally underwhelming character movements like the one where the MC runs out of the forest. Absolutly unaccetable, because this looks really like an old XBOX1 game. I am also a little disappointed about the environments. They look ok, but nothing more. So the big deal about the photorealistic grass is just another hype like the 3d grass from Forza2. The only thing that could look photorealistic are the ground textures in the forest. But this is really nothing special. Even 6 years old PC games had photo textures. I thought they come up with some kind of good looking 3d grass. So CoD3 and CoD4 provides much much better grass that looks real.
I have to say this is not the quality i've expected to fininish this triology. It's really a shame that mostly all 3rd parties do a much much better job.

What else from a gameplay perspective needs to make it special? Its Halo 3 we want the same successful formula with new things and they're are delivering on that. I don't know what more you can really expect.

The story isn't something that can simply be looked at as "well other games have great stories too." I know that, but Halo is still Halo its unique and people care about what is going on with Cortana people wanna know what goes on with the Chief. People wish to know the details of what was found on earth. The story is just something a lot of people wanna know more about.

The story is a very big deal for me and for others. It alone is worth the price of admission as long as the gameplay is fun and Halo's gameplay has always been fun and its going to be even better in Halo 3. There are new vehicles, new grenade types we apparently haven't been shown, different equipement (shield grenade, shield drianer, grav lift) and a ton of other equipment additions we still don't know about yet.

Spike grenade.. pretty much a ton of things. It's halo with more weapons, new equipment additions, more new vehicles, larger battles, larger environments. I don't really know what else to say all of this gameplay is fun its always been fun and now it'll be bigger and better, more intense than it was before and add in the story and Halo is a killer app.

What is COD4 doing that makes it special? It just looks amazing and fun to play and thats all there really is to it. The multiplayer stuff like last stand etc is pretty cool I gotta admit though. Call of Duty 4 is like previous COD games only more impressive technically and modern. Plus there is more of an attempt to have a cool story it seems with this being modern.

I don't know how else to really say it, but we are getting what people expected and wanted from halo gameplay and story. The story alone is all Halo needs to seperate itself from other games. Its not a matter of whether or not other games have great stories. The other game stories aren't Master Chief's story they don't take place in Halo's Universe. When I say that I'm not saying other games have bad stories, but halo's story and universe has what has made it special and without that the Halo series would be nothing.

So needless to say there aren't many reasons that one needs to give for why Halo 3 will be special and I hope people understand that.

I do believe the title was mishandled at E3 Acert and its almost an a slap in the face for people that believe halo should seem more important, but it appears as if Microsoft made it take a backseat to the third party games which is incredibly surprising. It was like they were trying to be respectful of third parties who'll have their games released in the same timeframe.

Second one I think is from near E3 06 trailer.

Halo has scripted moments too so those will add to the game, but what we saw was all gameplay and some glimpses of single. It looked awesome tbh, but that isn't the type of trailer halo 3 deserves, but I know them putting a better one together would've set them back and the end product is whats most important.

Enemies have jetpacks for god sakes lol. What if the chief can use one ? =P

Stuff that sets it apart from Halo 2. Interestingly enough, the one thing that NO ONE has mentioned about what makes Halo 3 special is one of the things that actually separates it from Halo 2 -- deployable equipment. This actually adds a new layer of gameplay to the franchise, unlike the AI, and the vehicles,
