Ubisoft's and Gearbox's Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway was released last week in both Europe and the US, and here's a new Q&A provided by XCN. As before, the interview consists of questions submitted by different sites and members, so it's a big mix of different stuff. I remember some of these from our forums, and this one covers everything from delays, multiplayer, physics to demos and much more. With some luck we'll have a copy of the game this week and the First 10 Minutes online.

2007-11-22 13:11:24 Brothers In Arms 3 is still Alive & kicking - New Preview

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=88...

It's got a lof of the PR bullshit you'de expect. I like this bit in particular about their cover system but him mentioning both Halo 3 and COD4 is just calling for trouble. let's hope they deliver

You'll play the game from the first person point of view and you're a real character in the world, not just a camera. Whenever you're near a wall or any kind of cover, you can choose to "Dig-In". When you dig in, you're really hugging the walls and the cover. It's better than Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 where you're just sliding back and forth from behind cover. Using dig-in is really evolved from that kind of old-school FPS strafing. It's a lot of fun and a huge improvement from where FPS games have been.

I just read it, but it doesn't reveal a lot. I just hope they will show us some more screenshots or trailers soon.

This game is still high on my want list :) Cover is a great addition--hopefully it is more like RB6 or what KZ2 showed and less like GoW cover.

I don't think there is a lot of PR bullshit, the guy is just extremely enthusiastic whenever he talks about his games - watch the BIA presentation here on gamersyde. Though I think he's more of a studio manager or producer rather than designer.

He can call out Halo3 or COD4 as they have no cover mechanic - I think it's more of a hiding than cover. but I don't think either is better than the other - it's completely different. He would do much better if he compared it to the newest RB6 IMO.

On mine, too.

Too bad he didn't want to comment on multiplayer other than "it's awesome etc.". I would like to know the new mechanics, especially if it has a chance to be more successful than precedessors in terms of popularity, which was non-existant.

I think I'm going to rebuy and replay BIA Road to Hill 30 one of these days, this time the PC version for better image quality :)

I want this game.. but I sorta hate the fact that some people think every game needs a cover system. I've been taking cover in FPS for years without some blind fire mechanic. It's called ducking, or going prone behind an object. Additionally, game like Call of Duty have a "lean and peak" mechanic which is just as valuable in most cases, without giving a line of sight or blind fire bonus to the player.

I HATE cover systems that allow you to aim from cover. Games like R6:vegas and PDZ come to mind. That just does not make sense to me.

Yup.. in Gears you can still sorta do it too, but at least you're not given a reticle.

Hopefully cover system will not become ultimately the new health recharging, which while fits many games is also lazy design in others [in (pseudo)realistic shooters, for example]. I'm so glad it wasn't adopted by BiA, but now cover system is... Hopefully it'll be better for the game.

BiA3 is similar to GoW in this regard.

I think cover is a valuable game mechanic, and it has its place in the FPS/TPS world, I just don't want it to become too overwhelming of a trend. I think the KZ2 cover system is one of the more interesting implementations of this idea that I've seen recently.

I'm not too worried. If you look at some other popular trends, like more advanced stance mechanics (prone), lean and peak, etc -- which have all found their place in many popular shooters -- they haven't taken the genre over completely. Hopefully cover will find its niche and stick with it.. rather than becoming the new regenerative health.

I hope regenerative health takes a back seat in some cases as well, it's a wonderful mechanic, especially for single player games, but there are viable alternatives that are just as well designed I think. It beats the hell out of hunting for health packs, but what about medics, health stations, etc. There are existing options, and a creative developer could come up with new ones as well.

I really do want to play this game. I've never played a BIA game before, and I do enjoy a good squad campaign, and I actually do still enjoy the WWII setting as well. I hope it's better than GRAW, with a more engaging story, at least.

Considering that neither Halo 3 nor Call of Duty 4 actually have a cover system, then the statement is more than accurate.

Now, had he made the comparison to say Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas or GRAW/GRAW2, then he'd have to back up those words with more than just words.

All things considered however, the first two BIA titles were top notch, AAA games, and there is little reason to believe that Gearbox cannot continue to deliver the goods. I think one of the reasons the game is continually being delayed, is an impetus by the company to not only to make it as close to perfect as possible, but to create what is quite possibly the best WWII shooter ever made; for that matter, one of the best shooters ever . . . and it shows. Everytime they show off Hell's Highway it looks light years beyond the last time you saw it - which is a very good thing, especially considering the competition. One thing is for certain, once Gearbox finally delivers this monster, be prepared to have the high water mark of what it is to be a shooter, set just that much higher than it was before. Not hyperbole, just the likely outcome of years worth of dedicated work from one of the best devs on the planet.

So you no longer think KZ2 demo sucked gameplay-wise? :P

Even older BIAs are still worth playing IMO, so you could play them. :)

Just because a game has flaws doesn't mean it doesn't have strong points or offer up quality implimentations to progress a genre.
