Electronic Arts and Crytek have formally announced Crysis 3. Described as a sandbox shooter, the title is set to release in Spring 2013. Meanwhile, get the first details and screenshots inside.

Press release:

Crytek Takes Aim with Crysis 3 – The First Blockbuster Shooter of 2013

Fight in the New York ‘Liberty Dome’, Exploit Seven Natural Wonders and Wield Advanced Alien Weaponry in the Ultimate Sandbox Shooter

Pre-order the Crysis 3 Hunter Edition for Early Access to the New Crysis 3 Signature Bow and XP Boost in Multiplayer*

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The hunted becomes the hunter! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) and award-winning developer Crytek GmbH, today announced Crysis® 3, the premier sandbox shooter experience of 2013. Powered by Crytek’s proprietary CryENGINE®, Crysis 3 advances the state of the art with unparalleled visuals and dynamic shooter gameplay. Players take on the role of ‘Prophet’ as he returns to New York, only to discover that the city has been encased in a Nanodome created by the corrupt Cell Corporation. The New York City Liberty Dome is a veritable urban rainforest teeming with overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers. Within the Liberty Dome, seven distinct and treacherous environments become known as the Seven Wonders. This dangerous new world demands advanced weapons and tactics. Prophet will utilize a lethal composite bow, an enhanced Nanosuit and devastating alien tech to become the deadliest hunter on the planet.

“Crysis 3 is a thrilling mix of sandbox gameplay, advanced combat and hi-tech human and alien weaponry that shooter fans will love,” said Cevat Yerli, Chief Executive Officer of Crytek. “Leveraging the latest CryENGINE technology, we’re able to deliver seven unique themes that offer stunning and visually loaded gameplay experiences. We cannot wait until people get their hands on the game.”

Set in 2047, Prophet is on a revenge mission after uncovering the truth behind Cell Corporation’s motives for building the quarantined Nanodomes. The citizens were told that the giant citywide structures were resurrected to protect the population and to cleanse these metropolises of the remnants of Ceph forces. In reality, the Nanodomes are CELL’s covert attempt at a land and technology grab in their quest for global domination. With Alien Ceph lurking around every corner and human enemies on the attack, nobody is safe in the path of vengeance. Everyone is a target in Prophet’s quest for retribution.

Crytek also announced that players who are ready to start the hunt can pre-order the Crysis® 3 Hunter Edition* today. The Crysis 3 Hunter Edition gives players the tools to become the ultimate hunter in multiplayer with early access to the new signature bow and its attachments, plus the Hunter Nanosuit module which adds additional power and functionality to the super-suit. Gamers who pre-order now will also have a head start when playing online with a bonus XP boost up to level 5, a unique bow skin and three exclusive dog tags to hunt in style**. The Crysis 3 Hunter Edition is available on Origin.com and other participating retailers for $59.99.

Stalker Pack – Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: for players who like to stalk their prey from the shadows the Stalker Pack provides early multiplayer access to the deadly semi-auto Jackal shotgun. This powerful, close-range shotgun comes with a unique silencer attachment, custom weapon skin and two exclusive themed in-game dog tags.
Overkill Pack – Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Overkill Pack features early multiplayer access to the Typhoon assault weapon and skin. Spewing 500 rounds a second, the Typhoon gives players the ability to go guns blazing to take back the Liberty Dome. Also included are two exclusive Overkill themed in-game dog tags.

Not a fan of city's that have been turned into Jungle's but loved C1 & 2 so no doubt it will be good. PC version is going to look incredible.

No mention of open-ended level design? If it was like Deus Ex where you could use your powers to jump around and get to secret places, I'd appreciate that. Was that possible in Crysis 2? Multiple venues to get into places?

Not really.. they handed you a few options (literally) in any given scenario but it was very linear. They have mentioned that they're opening it back up a bit, but I'll believe it when I see it.

It's worth noting that Crysis was never a complete sandbox. It's more of a series of smaller sandboxes. That still offered a lot more freedom in approach than Crysis 2 did.

ya really.

Sure, you were in a big open area and couldn't backtrack to the beggining of the game. linear, but you could do the game anyway you wanted. First section you enter the tank... go straight trough the road, or inside the sewage.

In the pier to the house of the doctor... go down the pier or through it. There is always a full on way, or a sthealth alternative way. not THAT open like "you can see the whole island from here", but its the perfect balance between linear and open-ended approach to gameplay.

There's nearly no sense of exploration in Crysis 2. Load up dem magic binoculars and see the few, sparse options that the developers have laid out directly in front of you. The game is a linear shooting gallery for the most part. Oh, there a few scenarios where they give you an alternate route! That's the illusion of open ended gameplay. Want to take a simple flank around the block? LOL! We've barricaded every street down this path! Don't be silly.

Compared to Warhead, the game is simply awful.

shitting me right?

Crysis 3: Take the invasion to them

We should steal their ship and fly it to their planet.

Sweet, although crysis 2 wasn't "perfect" i really enjoyed it. So let them work on this new crysis and learn from the flaws then they will get my money!

i think that's what he means, he'd rather it be in another city other then "new fucking york"

which i agree with. at least this new york is utterly fucked up. makes it a bit more bearable.

i hope this one is less focused on the aliens. they where boring to fight, had the worst, most buggy AI in all of crysis 2, and generally they wernt any fun to fight against.

I am with the anti Crysis 2 force, I reinstalled and tried to replay Crysis 2 over the weekend but couldn't....the game is just fucking awful

not even the DX11 eye candy can save it. On the other hand I beat Crysis 1 like 8 times, it was soo good (at least before the aliens showed up anyway)

And speaking of aliens, the only game that gets aliens right is Bungie/343 Studio. Everyone else just fails, especially Crytek, they have failed the most. First, it was the trigens which totally ruined Far Cry when they showed up. Second, the retarded ice aliens ruined the ending of Crysis 1 and Warhead and finally, Crysis 2's aliens were just boring as shit. No personality, no threat, just generic robots.

Not out right said, but they talk about spliting up the world in a way that makes me think of Bioshock, so split into chunks that you can make your way back and forth through at will.
Also holy fuck those shots look sharp. I mean SERIOUSLY. Damn. I really like this change in environment, looks really cool and potentially an interesting gameplay space. Interested to see how this turns out!

Hopefully the bow and more jungle-like New York means we'll get a real Crysis sequel. Free-roaming and stealthy, not on-rails and generic like Crysis 2 was(MP was barrels of fun, though).

Please no Crysis 2 story.....
If you read the press release the story sounds as stupid as ever. The setup in Crysis 1 was also pretty good. Sheesh.. talk about a disaster of a sequel.

oh crytek... have screens splashed over the internet, then when the cat is out of the bag, runs launching official screens.

... with NO TRAILER. oh so terribly exciting.

Must be PS3 or PC screens.

xbox355 can't render graphics like that.

Come to think of it, 360 can't render anything close to God of war 3 or Uncharted 3.

But it's had a good try, bless.

Come to think of it, GOD OF WAR 4 19/4/12.
