Marvel and Capcom Team Up Once Again for the Highly Anticipated Return of the Celebrated Action-Fighting Franchise

ANAHEIM – Dec. 3, 2016 – Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced MARVEL VS. CAPCOM: INFINITE, the return of the highly revered action-fighting game series. Marvel and Capcom universes collide like never before as iconic characters team up for action-packed player-versus-player combat. MARVEL VS. CAPCOM: INFINITE is currently in development and will simultaneously release on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One®, and Windows PC worldwide in late 2017.

“For the last two decades, Marvel vs. Capcom has been one of the most celebrated franchises among fans,” said Mike Jones, Executive Producer, Marvel Entertainment. “To deliver on that legacy, we’ve worked closely with Capcom to create a game that honors the heritage of the series and combines Marvel’s unique brand of storytelling with Capcom’s world-class gameplay. We’re raising the bar with Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and are excited for players to get their hands on it next year.”

Imagined and created through a shared vision between the two companies, MARVEL VS. CAPCOM: INFINITE will feature a variety of exciting and accessible single player modes and rich multi-player content for new players and longtime fans alike. In addition to single player Arcade, Training, and Mission modes, a visually stunning and immersive cinematic Story Mode will put players at the center of both universes as they battle for survival against a sinister new threat.

“It was deeply inspiring for our development team to join forces again with Marvel and we can’t wait for our fans to experience the benefits of that collaboration first hand,” said Michael Evans, Director of Production for Capcom USA. “With Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, our goal is to provide memorable experiences and infinite gameplay possibilities for players of all skill levels.”

MARVEL VS. CAPCOM: INFINITE is being built to highlight a combination of iconic and fan favorite characters and stages from both universes, including Captain Marvel and Iron Man from the Marvel side, and Ryu and Mega Man X from Capcom. More characters, stages, modes and features will be revealed in the coming months. Tune in to ESPN2 on Sunday at 5:30PM PST, December 4 during the Capcom Cup 2016 broadcast to see an exclusive first look of an extended gameplay trailer from MARVEL VS. CAPCOM: INFINITE.

In anticipation of the new game, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is being re-released for current generation systems; with the “PlayStation 4” digital download version available today and the Xbox One® and Windows PC versions coming in March 2017. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for current-gen systems includes a new gallery mode, is packed with all previous DLC, and features an improved 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second. I really, really hope they put X-Men characters in it, because if not, it will be a really big letdown. The X-Men universe is an essential part of the Marvel universe. We'll see.

I love Mega Man's look, it looks amazing. God, how much I miss a new Mega Man, maybe Legends 3, game. Yet, we had 3 Lost Planet games and 4 Dead Rising games... T_T

As I said in the what's up box.. it's not just that it's a big part of the Marvel Universe. It's hugely significant to this franchise. Marvel's history in Capcom fighters starts with "X-Men: Children of the Atom" and the first versus game was X-Men Vs. Street Fighter. Wolverine is top tier in every game. They're basically losing their mascot.

And I'm triggered by the mention of "infinity gems". Very mixed feels but I look forward to seeing gameplay at Capcom Cup tonight. And I want it to do well even if I don't like the execution because it could be good for the "scene".

Wolverine has always been in all fighting games with Marvel characters, so I understand the significance. But I spoke in general, Marvel is not just X-Men, even without its characters, it's still a very rich universe with thousands of other characters. But of course, it would be a very big loss to the game.

As for Infinite Gems, someone said it might be tied to the Power Stones, the jewels that Thanos is searching for. So it might be a new mechanic, we will know more after Capcom unveils the Gameplay trailer at the Capcom Cup tournament.

It directly correlates to Fox owning the X-Men film property I think.
I'm speculating but it seems like Marvel has dropped a lot of support for X-Men until it's back in their possession.
The comics have really suffered for years and I'm not surprised they've pulled it from MvC too.
Marvel is going to focus on the characters they have total control over. Ones that promote their own films.

If people complain enough maybe X-Men will make it back later.
I'm real curious if Gaurdians of the Galaxy finds it's way in.

I guess it's worth noting too that the X-Men never deal with the Infinity Stones - if that's the angle they're shooting for

Yes, like GriftGFX said, it's 100% correct. One of the Marvel comics people said this to the community. Paraphrasing it, it was: "If you're a company and you have 2 properties and you can get more profit from one than the other, you know which property will get prioritized/focused on".

Also, while doing a little bit of research I found many other examples of Marvel "actively" putting a stop to merchandise of X-Men, Fantastic 4 and other IP's it doesn't have the full rights to. For the sake of not making this post very long, more details about these can be read in the article below:

Why Marvel Doesn’t Want You To Watch X-Men:
http://thefederalist.com/2016/05/27/why-marvel-doe...

There are many, many more articles about this, just Google search for "Marvel Fox Rights Controversy" and you will hundreds of articles. I'm not sure if this is solely because of Disney, who owns Marvel, or if it's a decision by Marvel executives by themselves, either way it's true.

Though it should be mentioned that both Marvel and Fox have been rebuilding the bridges recently, which is why Spider-Man - a character that Fox holds the rights to - has appeared in Captain America: Civil War, a Marvel Studios' movie with Marvel characters.

Hopefully this continues, I would absolutely love to see a X-Men vs. Avengers crossover 3 hours movie, like many stories in the comics have shown in the past. Now put a 200-300 million budget behind it and it will be a really big success. I personally would prefer to watch this crossover more than 2-3 movies of just the Avengers with some allies against Thanos.

To be clear: Marvel doesn't need Fox to use X-Men in this game. They're just bitter cunts.

Unfortunately, you're right. Which is sad. This also extends to next Kingdom Hearts games, would love to see X-Men and Spider-Man worlds in a Kingdom Hearts game. But they could always add The Avengers and/or Star Wars, though it's very unlikely.

Yes, you're right. I should have mentioned Fox only has the rights to the movies, but even so, like the many examples in the link I posted show, Marvel/Disney is actively sabotaging the brands they don't own the movie rights to - or to put in a less evil way, they're "focusing" almost exclusively on the brands they own the movie rights to.

Either way, X-Men has been getting the shaft for years now, be it the comics, toys, statues, clothes, posters or anything else. So there's no reason why it would be any different regarding to games. The only reason I'm not worried about Spider-Man not being in MvC:I is because the character is too big in popular culture, it's bigger than any other Marvel character - just like Batman is for DC. So Capcom nor Marvel would be crazy and dumb enough to not put him in the game.
