Developer Diary Xbox 360 PS3

After a 15 minutes video just a few weeks ago, Brütal Legend is back with nothing less than 20 minutes of commented gameplay! And it looks as great as ever too.

definitely contender for GOTY, I had no idea it was open world, that instantly maximises the appeal.

I'll say this until I'm blue in the face, games these days become more inventive when they blend genres, Brutal Legend is a Racer, RTS, Adventure, Action, Shooter, Platformer and Story based game, did I miss anything. For this alone it's trampling in uncharted waters.

Racer? I didn't see any race so far.
RTS? Squad commands alone don't make a game a RTS.
Shooter? I didn't see any guns so far.
Platformer? The game has no jump button.
"Story based game"? WTF?!?

To me it looks like a mediocre Hack 'n' Slay game (like Psychonauts was a mediocre platformer in its core) that shines with great design and great dialogues

Racing as in driving, my fault and you've mentioned that it lacks the depths of the genres it attempts to incorporate but this is were it becomes the sum of all its parts, isolate them and it will appear bland but generate the perspective to understand that you get to experience a bit of everything and much like Zelda you begin to appreciate the scale and variety. More importantly what they do well is they take the core mechanics of each genre and banish the more extravagant traits, much like how driving games can allow for brake tweaking and so forth, all that is removed, allowing for a stream-lined driving experience, granted shoulder to shoulder with most specialised racing games it falls short but in the context of what the game offers you'll fail to notice.

Ohh and the shooting is where he lets out a streak of lighting and also he shoots bolts and there is a jump button for platforming and the story driving aspect is something that I shouldn't need to explain, it's what Tim Schafer brings to all his games, whether you see it or not, it will be there.

omniscient: Well personally i think that making 20 things and doing a so-so job is not preferable to making one or two things really good but hey, to each his own i guess. I'm not expecting Brutal Legend to shine in gameplay, but i'm expecting the game to make me laugh and that's enough to make me want to check it out :)

Definitely agree, I suppose my argument though would be regarding the point at which a game/ genres depth in features surpasses the enjoyment for the player, let me explain, so in Gran Turismo you can add spoilers tweak the engine essentially optimise your car, however if Burnout decided to add these features would it really enhance the experience, I think not, you see in the world Tim schafer has created the depth most genres lean upon is essentially as you may put the crux on which defines that genres specialty but in actuality this depth is like the cherry on the cake, the fun is imbeded in the core mechanics of each genre and so because Brutal Legend doesn't indulge itself in these genre specific eccentricities such as brake trweaking it ultimately still suffers nothing and this rings the louder when as a package you gain other experiences other than just driving, which is why I say blending genres always creates a more inventive game, not necessarily a better but just a more fresh or unique experience e.g, Mirrors Edge was just platforming in First Person yet it felt new, LBP is basically every genre another game that feels inventive and I'm sure there are more.
