Page 1 2 >>Fun fact: Microsoft owned SoftImage from '94-'98, until Avid aquired the company from them--it's one of the few acquisitions that MS has split from.
Me too, this stuff gets me off..love seeing those wireframes. Bizarre uses XSI, interesting--It's been forever since I've even seen a copy of Softimage--I'd love to try the new one.
I believe it also includes PDF and HTML documentation so you'll have all you need to learn ;)
It's never too late to give it a try! Softimage just released XSI 5.0 and you can try a 30-day trial for free: http://www.softimage.com/products/xsi/v5/foundatio...

Hey thanks for the tip, didn't realise they did free trials--downloading now :) Are you a 3D artist? Is XSI a good solution for people using 3D for non-animation purposes such as illustration and graphic design? I've switched around quite a bit trying different things, Max, Maya, Lightwave--currently for illustration purposes I find Lightwave to be a pretty enjoyable package, and the renderer is friggin amazing.
Yup I'm a 3D artist and yeah XSI is quite a good solution. Although it has excellent animation tools you'll find the other toolsets are just as good. There are certain limitations that might make you go "wtf?" at times but its workflow can't be matched IMO. The renderer is superb (a native integration of mentalray) and via the rendertree (sort of like the shade network in maya) you have access to pretty much everything you want in terms of shading. Then there's the render region (press Q and draw a square box on any viewport, and it renders instantly) and other innovations that are amazing to work with. I could go on and on as you can see, but its def a great package :)
I'd also like to get into game modeling a bit, but I'm not exactly sure where to start--my experience hasn't been with dealing with polygon budgets..I'd love to get some people together to work on a HL2 of BF2 mod or something--it'd be good, fun practice.
Blim... you misquoted them... They said the average is actually 96,000 polygons, as some go as high as 105,000!!
Yeah, sorry about that, was in a kind of a rush.
DubC:
Yeah, you're right. Damn, many errors.
I cant believe Bizarre would lie to us like this...how long have they been hiding this from us :'( I'm cancelling my pre-order, I didnt believe Kutaragi when he said Xbox 1.5, but now I know he was right allllll along. ;-)
Excellent, my DL has 10 minutes left :) I'll probably wait til later this evening to check it out, I've been doing primarly 2D work for the last year or so--but I've never lost interest in modeling--been doing it on the side for quite some time..even considered doing 3D animation in school but I wound up going through the Graphic Design program instead--still no reason to give up on 3D though, I find it to be a terribly useful illustration tool, 3D for 2D if you will..

What?!?
I use XSI mainly for the Toon Shader, I'm sure you're aware that the Appleseed movie was made using this shader primarily. You can do some really creative things with it.

I'm impressed at the level of detail.
