Alone in the Dark 5 images

Atari and Eden studios today announced that Alone In The Dark 5 will be released on PC too. They also sent us these two images, probably from the PC version.

the first image is a bit confused, too much DOF....the second looks ingame graphic, it is ok but i expect more from a nextgen title..

Excellent use of lighting in the second shot

Excessive use of blurring in the first!

When you're looking at something far, the close objects blur.
When your looking at something close, the far objects blur.

This has done a mixture of both for some reason. :S

Hahahahahaha, I swear I'm the only guy who clicks on news excited about the actual game. I'm the single, only, sole person on this whole site!

It almost looks like tilt-shift photography which is used to make things look like models, but in this case it just looks terribly wrong!

Simon: I'm looking forward to it aswell but I wonder how much effort will go into this game after Uwe Boll totally obliterated the franchise with his movie.

Looks pretty good so far, I'm sure there are still lots of fans of AITD even after the movie, I mean look at RE4.. even though its movie counterparts didn't suck as bad.

I hope they get it out for this year

It's called Depth of Field, used a lot by professional photographers. ie. you look at a fixed object, which is then perfectly in focus, then the further away or the closer to you, the more blur. LOL ;O)

That use of depth of field blurring actually looks great. Very cinematic.

You see a ton of that kind of blurring in modern motion pictures and photography, you just don't notice it.

We notice. But the way they did it in this picture isn't right.
The eagle closest should be in focus.

Because that is how depth of feild works, your eyes can only focus on one area at one..

Not if the middle eagle is fixed in focus AFAIK. If you use a cam and focus (fixed focus, not auto!) an object, and then move the cam half behind a very nearer object, you get exactly the same effect with the near object and the far away scene both blurry.

I'm not gonna debate over the focus thing, but the game looks pretty decent to me.

I loved Alone in the Dark on the Dreamcast so I'm looking forward to this one a great deal.

yeah the DOF effect looks correct. the closest eagle would be blurred if the other one is meant to be focused. Ninety-Nine Nights uses this effect as well, though it's not as obvious in some of the screenshots. it was obvious in the demo i played though.
Commented on 2006-04-12 13:51:10
wow, i'm really impressed by these visuals! i don't care if the focus is right :)

Never played an Alone in the Dark game apart from a demo in playstation.

This looks good..kinda brings back the feeling of resident evil back in the days..(resident evil 2) except with next gen visuals!

That would rock though

It doesn't matter which one is the closest, it's which one you're focused on that matters. In this case it happens to be the middle one.
