Xbox 360 PS3

I guess we can now officially say that July is not a completely dead month for gaming news, and I'm sure you are as happy about this as I am. This time we get a brand new video of Tony Hawk's Project 8, and it looks like it's more or less completely ingame. I'm not as convinced with the animations as I was with the E3 trailer, but this is still a giant leap comparable to that horrible America Most Wanted game on 360.

RC_Master: I'm curious, where do you live?
There's quite a few black skaters. Kareem Campbell, Stevie Williams, Harold Hunter who skated for Zoo York, I know alot of Chicago skatevideos with many black skaters, there's even this new rapper Lupe Fiasco who has a new video "Kick Push" that's all about skating...even I'M a black skater!

They're definitely out there, and it seems to be increasing.

You have to play Thrasher to know what I mean
I did play Trasher, I remember it was good in terms of gameplay, but in terms of how much there was to it, it didn't come close to TH. The game had some ridiculous rag-doll physics, is that what you are talking about?

I didnt think these guys were able to reinvent something as next-gen as the orignal hawk was on the psx, or even X2 on DC. And I was right.

How about adding a physics engine for instance, inertia, torque, mass, blended animations. Some racing games are starting to approach a level of realism that is even remotely respectable (forza, gtr, rbr), but this game could run on the PSX absolutely fine (I mean the core game, remove the graphics). Last-last-gen is not next-gen, not even with sugar on top.

Codemasters and Neversoft must have the same brains in their management. Recycle, recreate, rinse, repeat.

30 FPS really doesn't work on a game like this.

Well, yeah, the gameplay is what i was basing my "best skate game ever" opinion on. It did and still does have killer gameplay. I agree that the game is a little short, but everything else about that game is awesome. The rag-doll physics were rediculous, but it was way better than the stupid pre-animated falls of TH. Oh, and FYI (RC_Master) there are lots of black skaters. Darrell Stanton!, Ray Barbee has been around since forever!, Chima Ferguson (who btw is only an AM and fircken RIPS!), and Corey Duf....oh wait...he only wishes he was black.

LOL you guys are histerical "It looks to unrealistic"

Games move to realistic... AKA Chromehounds... and people bitch its boring... Tony hawk makes it fun by amping things up and people whine that it's "not real enough" give me a break

Though there is 1 HUGE issue i hate about this vidfeo and i saw it in the pictures as well a few weeks back... how does he manage to change the trick (tap the board) without touching the board... watch the video... the direction changes on the board are done without actually touching it WTF

NO. It's not the same. There are some realism done very well (GTR), and then there's some "realism" done very bad (Chromehounds). And I don't want to argue about it, but there's a difference, and I know because I like realism in any kind of genre.

I'd gladly give them $50/year just to stop making Tony Hawk games... seriously.

Perhaps if they took the time just sit down, make a "fresh" game, and then release it, it would be ok. But nobody needs a new Tony Hawk game every year.

They were never going to be able to make the whole game animate as smoothly as the E3 trailer because of the twitch nature of the game.

It doesn't look terrible, it just doesn't seem like the "reinvention" that they claimed.

I said it before, the best skate game EVER is one of the very first (3D) ones made. Thrasher Skate And Destroy!! for the ps1!!! No one will ever make a better skate game than that.
id agree. SnD's gameplay with the 360's power, and id probably never buy another video game.

that said, this video was terrible. shoddy framerate, terrible transition animations (no ollie or impact animations) and the texture work looked blurry.

they had people pumped with the e3 vid, and releasing a video like this could detract from the hype.

The E3 trailer looked a great game with fantastic animation, this trailer demonstrates that that trailer was only a concept, a concept that the tight schedule set by a stupid boss or, unlikely, the lazyness of the programmers, has thrown into the waste bin. The game studios think that we are stupid.

The fantastic animation is there, but there is always a visible difference when you add player interaction into the mix and the transitions have to be quick or the game would be unresponsive.

You have to remember, sometimes realism has to be sacrificed to keep gameplay fun. think of halo. this 7 foot tall guy, that weighs 1000 lbs (he is about as dense as steel as far as i can figure, 7 ft tall humans are only around 300lbs when average build) can jump 10 feet high, absorb literally 100 rounds of submachine gun hits, but one punch and he dies. it sacrifices realism to make it fun. socom games are very realistic, but alot of it isnt, some guns have way way more recoil than they should (m4 has a ton in the game, in real life it has nearly none, ive seen my gunnery sargent friend put an m4 butt to his nose, pull the trigger, and be fine) also, the ammunition has so much energy due to its deformation after entering the body that one shot usually brings the target down, not 4, but they know that and change it in the sence of balance and fun. tony hawk has never been realistic, how many people have you seen ollie over a car, how often have you seen someone manual on grass for 300 ft or nosegrind a rotten log?i admit that the slomo animations where he doesnt touch the board are silly, but it isnt a final build and it is still fairly easily fixed at this point.

realism is one thing, I understand that games have to be fun. what I'm pissed about is that Neversoft still doesn't seem to think that the gameplay actually needs to be improved upon. This Project 8 game is the same as a the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater from X years ago. We're talking next gen here, that doesn't mean repackage Tony Hawk 1 with new graphics, I think a lot of us here were hoping for some advancement to the actual game itself.

Project 8 appears to be yet another sellout and milking of the fans of the genre by putting on a new gloss of paint and calling it a new game. That isn't good enough any more. The consoles now have so much horsepower and these guys aren't even TRYING to use it because they know they can just make sales by putting the TH name on the box.

I won't be touching Project 8 with a 10 foot pole. The series needs to be redesigned.
