Official announcement:

EA ANNOUNCES DEF JAM: ICON FOR PLAYSTATION 3 AND XBOX 360 EA Chicago, the Creator of the Acclaimed EA SPORTS Fight Night Franchise, Partners with Def Jam Interactive to Redefine Hip-hop, Music and Fighting Games

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – October 18, 2006 – Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS), in partnership with Def Jam Interactive, announced today that DEF JAM: ICON™ will be released for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system in March 2007 in North America and Europe. Infusing hip-hop music, culture and lifestyle into the gameplay, EA Chicago and urban lifestyle powerhouse Def Jam Interactive, continue to push the boundaries of game development bringing unique and innovative content to the next generation of gaming.

“Music is the cornerstone of hip-hop culture so we wanted to incorporate music and rhythm into the actual gameplay mechanics,” said Kudo Tsunoda, executive producer and General Manager of EA Chicago. “In DEF JAM: ICON, we are changing the way fighting games are played! We are completely innovating the role of the environments in the games, moving from the typical lifeless arenas the hip-hop celebrities are fighting in to environments that play an instrumental part in the fight where they will react to the music and interact with both characters like a third fighter.”

EA Chicago is delivering star-stunning action and bone breaking beats as players live out the life of a hip hop mogul, going from rags to riches. Incorporating hip-hop culture into every aspect of the game, DEF JAM: ICON will deliver the intensity of a no-holds-barred street fight but with style and rhythm. Music will effect how players fight in each venue and environmental interactions and hazards will become a key strategy to staying alive.

EA Chicago’s unique fighting gameplay controls introduce a new way for gamers to fight as they assume the role of top celebrity characters such as Ludacris, T.I. and Big Boi. Innovative controls give better feedback to players so they feel like they’re actually throwing the combat moves. Gamers can now fight with the style and flash of the superstar personalities.

“The Def Jam Interactive – EA relationship has expanded into a new frontier with EA Chicago’s breakthrough technology. We have worked very closely with the team to ensure that authentic hip-hop culture and lifestyle permeates through every part of the product. DEF JAM: ICON will guarantee the ultimate combination of a real hip-hop experience and revolutionary fighting gameplay,” said Lauren Wirtzer, VP Marketing, Def Jam Enterprises.

DEF JAM: ICON is scheduled to ship in March 2007 for the PLAYSTATION®3 system and Xbox 360™. DEF JAM: ICON has not yet been rated by PEGI or the USK.

Whats with the look of the buildings in the background? And the seemingly cut-up car? This looks weird, in a American McGees Alice kind of way. Which is cool, but not fitting in the Def Jam style. So ... strange.

I've added the official announcement. Looks like the environments are moving with the music. Strange.

the graphics look ok but this is wrestling and Rap culture in one. Its like two of my worst enemies in a video game lol. I wont be buying it, but its nice to see the 360 is getting quite a few of the ps2 sequals. It means alot more developers are going multi platform. Which is nice.

Why so? they seem to be trying to innovate with this game.

I'm not into Hip hop and stuff, but I definetely LOVED Fight for NY for PS2 (Yeah I can actually play a game without being biased by its branded content)

I loved the violence, the finishers, the huge amount of characters, and one of the best Story modes in a fighting game EVER. Great voice acting as well.

So this announcement really made my day.

Has anyone else noticed lately that EA games have all been sharing the same visual style? This whole, "street" look... the same slightly over-exposed imagery, washed out colours, etc... am I just going crazy?

edit: this wasn't meant to bash the game in any way btw, it still looks pretty impressive, heh..

i actually like the look of this, the graphics are pretty good and suited to the scenario, looking forward to beating up some rich rapper ass!

I'm really looking forward to this, Def Jam is so much fun.

very very boring, ea has lost all imagination, dancing buildings, whatever

Def Jam is absolutely awesome. No amount of crazy hip hop bullshit could taint the core of that game, which was just nuts. In fact, those of you who have been enjoying Sega's Yakuza can probably imagine how the fighting in this game is set up. You've got loads of context sensitive moves, but also a huge number of things you can do from different grabs.

Create-a-character is where it's at, of course, for all you non-rappers. You can mix styles and buy moves however you like, and sort of tailor your own street fighting style.

Trust me, if this is anything like Fight for NY and made with as much attention to detail and customisation as Fight Night 3, it'll be fantastic. Oh and a bit of Live play on top too, please.

again for the obvious slow people...

The buildings 'dance' with the music... They actually move accordingly to the music stream.

Yeah "slow"... haha.. :/

Dancing buildings in a game lol ... again, that's what IS wrong with the buildings, eh?..
that is probably the dumbest idea i have heard in a while... will they charge for it as well?
Commentaire du 18/10/2006 à 19:57:32
Are they trying to make it "cool"? And make it look like a real music video??

Some people love to just grab innovation and fling it over their shoulder..
Taking a cue from good ol' Ninty I see...

(Where innovation is stupid)
Commentaire du 18/10/2006 à 20:20:47
hey whats with the buildings??

(just kidding hehe)
Commentaire du 18/10/2006 à 22:37:27
It would seem people dont like new things, stop bitching for gods sake you havn't even seen it yet.

I mean seriously come on now, its obvious your looking for reasons to hate the game, get over it.
