Trailer and screens of Unreal Tournament 3

Midway just launched the official website of Unreal Tournament 3, showcasing a trailer and some screenshots. Planned to be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, the game is scheduled to hit shelves this winter.
Edit> Oops, seems like all this media is months old. Sorry for the mess.

I've been thinking and I've decided the "3" confuses me a bit. There are three Tournament games already, of which one was ported to Xbox and called Unreal Championship. That game spawned a sequel that wasn't based on any pre-existing PC game, called Unreal Championship 2.

So, Unreal Tournament still essentially has two sequels on the PC, yet this is called 3?

screenshot # 8...oh my god

the screenshots are pretty old, seen almost all of them I think. The graphics already looked better than GoW's a while ago so I have no doubts it'll look rather amazing when it's released. Have to see whether I'll buy it though as I don't only want it for the mutliplayer part.

Looks too good. I knew the first shot had to be PC. There's no way devs would devote that much video ram to the 360 and ps3 for the characters. The other shots might be from consoles, though since they don't look as good.

There are two answers, and they're both right. One way to look at it is simply that UT2k3 is a stain on UT's history, so it just doesn't count. The alternative answer is that 2k3/2k4 are so simular that it's almost not fair to call 2k4 a new installment in the series.. not sure which one is more right.. but for all intensive purposes.. 2k3 doesn't count.

Also worth noting that the worst installment in the UT franchise was not entirely made by Epic anyway (UT2k3). Digital Extremes worked quite a bit on the title.. and people generally don't like it as much as UT99 or 2k4.

Somehow I find it difficult to think that a company would officially sort of "smuggle off" one of the entries in a series because it "wasn't good enough", so I'd have to go with the alternative answer of them being too similar.

My theory was originally that they simply wanted to avoid confusion with Championship 2.

I can't wait for cole to appear in this game.

IT'S COLE TIME BABY!

Characters look like straight out of gears of war wearing different armour.. dunno why! since lost odyssey uses the unreal engine and has characters so different looking.

and dude, crysis is scary, the graphics actually scare me.. it's too realistic

Actually, in interviews with a couple of Epic employees, they specifically stated that they'd rather UT2003 be forgotten, as if it never happened, which is funny because we all SAW IT HAPPEN.
I do believe they've deleted any mention of the game on the main UT portal site as well.

So, UT2004 ends up being the 2nd UT, but we all laugh in the corner about UT2003
(which really wasn't that bad, just not polished enough... and I was thoroughly addicted to the fast weapon switching it provided "Shock, *ZAP*, Rata-tat!").

They've since learned their lesson, but in hindsight UT2003 ended up being a quick turn out for showcasing UE2.
I was admittedly wowed by DM-Antalus.

Love how everything looks so metal-ish. :)

Really? Wow, I stand corrected then! :O

I guess it's easier to condemn a product you worked on yourself though. Normally I reckon that's pretty bad ethics unless it was REALLY rubbish, because people worked on it - probably with best intentions - and it's pretty rude to diminish their work.

Art direction my friend, art direction. And as for Crysis, sure it looks insanely good, but you'll probably need an insane rig to play it at that graphical level.

UT3 looks better than Crysis to me. I'll take the colorful over-the-top look over realism anyday. Even UT2004 looks better than games like HL2 and FEAR to me.

i didnt think UE3 had anti-aliasing? cos alot of those shots are very clean looking. so im guessing either their typical promotional bullshots. or UE3 suddenly got a shit load of anti-aliasing

Well it is Epic's engine, i would assume they know how to get the most out of it, or they know tricks to get around AA. who knows.
