The embargo around DiRT is finally lifted, so it's with great pleasure that I release these three videos I recorded last week. You'll discover quite a lot of environments and a few game modes in there, and no doubt the majority will agree that this is a great looking game even if there is a lot of tearing and slowdowns in some modes.
As for the gameplay, I guess you all tried the demo so you already know how strange the handling can be at times. DIRT sometimes feels like a simulation, sometimes like an arcade game and sometimes like a big "WTF is going on?", very difficult to describe. Also worth mentioning are the incredibly long loadings between each race (thankfully only a couple of seconds for a restart), made slightly more acceptable by the excellent and very slick looking menu interface.
A game I can only recommend if you actually managed to get around the strange handling in the demo. Then you are in for an excellent single player experience.

So I would actually say some screen tearing and some occasional slowdown is forgiveable considering the overall graphical performance of the game.
And even from gameplay point of view it might come close to Forza because just because Forza is more or less realistic simulation this doesn´t automatically equal fun. Forza 2 can be a lot of fun, but the main mode (career) becomes very stale and boring after a few hours.

Commented on 2007-06-12 11:36:18all i know is, i was extremely excited to download the forza2 demo, and came away very disappointed. in fact, it didn't stay on my hard drive for more than 2 hours. i download the dirt demo, and came away surprisingly impressed, and it's still on my hard drive. it's more beautiful, got my blood pumping much more, and was more fun than forza2. although i will give forza2 something. within the first 5 seconds of playing, i thought to myself.. this FEELS beautiful. well, for me good gameplay isn't enough. i need something visually stimulating as well to fool my eyes and senses, to immerse me. forza2 did not immerse me...

For me is still the King of all Racers Rallisport challenge 2 just because it plays perfect, looks perfect and makes the most fun.
Anyway, look what I found. Hires screens of RC2. Add a bit more polys to cars, bigger textures and HDR effect used nowadays and you'll get the winner!

Commented on 2007-06-13 10:37:01It amazes me few people actually SEE the more than obvious screen tearing in the demo as well as in the gameplay movies. Perhaps a generation is getting used to unpolished (racing) games, perhaps they don't bother. Maybe both. Even worse, a generation of videogame reviewers simply ignores this technical issue (which is the consequence of devs using the VSYNC OFF option to artificially increase the framerate at the cost of screen coherence, hence the tearing which manifests itself as a horizontal line on screen). DiRT (to come back on topic) is a good example of a game using a new graphical engine which at its early stages cannot be tuned as projected within the timeframe of release so the devs chose the 'easy' way (production time and money saving way) of VSYNC OFF. It's a pity one of the DiRT devs stated earlier that they capped the game at 30 fps "to eliminate screen tearing". Obviously they didn't reach that goal. If we don't mention it on the forums or in the reviews, the devs will stop bothering about us feeling bad about screen tearing. That's why we should bring it to the public attention.
