If you mean "standard rts" as in it is doing nothing new then yes, take a look at games like End War who are actually DOING something with the genre.
Second, I'm not saying they'll take cover on their own, play Company of Heroes sometime, you tell them where you want them to take cover or when you want them to stand in the open.

i think this would have worked better gamplay wise if it was more like full spectrum warrior, or maybe incorporated full spectrum warrior gameplay into the standard RTS stuff...sort of a micro managment of troops. so you can asically zoom right into the action and take direct control of two 4 man squads while everything else is going on in the background. maybe play using the guys seen in the recent live action trailer thing...i dunno.

In the game company of heroes you command your squads so they can take cover behind different obstacles. You can also command them so that they stand in the open like in this video, you have the choice just like you do in the Halo fps games. If you are still confused, in Company of Heroes when you choose where to move your guys you have the option of clicking behind sandbags or bunkers.
However, because this plays more like Age of Empires, your guys just stand wherever you put them and exchange fire. There is no cover system and it's just about who has the better weapon on the field.
Age of Empires is a dated RTS system, and that's all this is.

Wow! Now I can see why the developers were so confident about this game. It looks stunning and the control scheme seems to really work unlike EA's RTS offerings which were just PC ports with an average control scheme thrown in.
If you are looking for something to push the genre, this isn't it, but for anyone looking for a solid RTS, this looks like a worthy candidate.
It would have been really easy for the developers to just quickly make a crappy RTS and it would still sell thanks to the Halo brand name but thankfully they are showing the respect this franchaise deserves and I for one will be looking forward to this game.

I don't have a good strategic sense, and I suck at these games, but it's a freakin halo game, so I'm there!! (avoiding MP though... )

Too bad you have to use a controller...

Are you serious? Play through any part of the game and marines are always behind something and running out firing or firing around corners.
Not only that but you yourself are always darting for cover as soon as that shield gets burned down and starts beeping.
