The first 10 minutes: Assassin's Creed
2007-11-15 22:35:06 by BlimBlim
Last minute change! The embargo for Assassin's Creed has been lifted here in Europe too. By chance I had already 2 videos uploaded, so here they are. At Ubisoft's request I'm not showing the real beginning of the game. If you know what happens, please don't spoil the surprise for the others! More videos, including from the PS3 version, and our impressions will follow later today and tomorrow.
Update: Third part available.
Update 2: Added a very short but still interesting video comparison of the 360 and PS3 versions. Thanks to TTP for the PS3 part :)
Update 3: Fourth and likely last video of the 360 version is up. Let me know if you want to see a video of what happens in the city.
Update 6: The PS3 video is back, this time with the right framerate. Again sorry about that.
Update 7: Since some people have claimed that the retail PS3 version ran far better than the review one, I went and bought it to make sure I didn't unfairly compare both versions. So I've done another comparison video, and you'll notice that the end result is still the same. I'm eagerly awaiting some people arguing that my PS3 is either broken, my capture hardware is buggy, or I've simply cheated the video so the 360 version looked better.

Gosh I read something about 5-min loading times for certain levels or maybe those were rumors.... I hope this game is as good as it's hyped up to be. There were tons of people waiting at TRU only to be disappointed when the manager came out and told them they didn't receive shipment for it.

I would totally watch, if I wouldn't have the game when the download is finished anyway, thanks tho :)

first off, thats a pretty huge exagerration if you watched that vid and say "OMG!!!! thats a game killing difference!!!"
second, to throw in another odd twist. there's more than just GS claiming that its the other way around (about the PS3 having crippling framerate issues), and now IGN has actually removed their comments on the framerates (at least in the body of their review, they still mention it on their scorecard, but they mention framerate issues in the 360 score card too)

360 ps3, looks the same bar the obvious 360 looks darker on shadows and ps3 looks brighter, but we all know that is a standered on the machines

Afterall im totally dissapointed with AC. GFX are great but lack of ideas and same missions over and over again make this game truly boring after a while. They have wasted huge potential.

Wow, 360 has a sharper textures on those buildings.

Why are there all sorts of words and symbols around the enemy's body you locked on? Like reading him with a high-tech goggle or something?

Same difference as always, 360 has got more contrast, dark looks darker and bright looks brighter. A mix of both versions would be perfect.

I'm kind of frustrated with this contrast thing about the PS3 - the mags show screens and videos that don't show the real deal at home on the TV.
the PS3 has just another gamma and colorprofile than the 360 and any cheap TV can do the deserved adjustments.
just ask any pro photographer how he is setting up his camera... all of them do the work afterwards on the pc and try to get as much detail as possible first with the SLR cam. too much contrast and you loose those precious details in the bright areas of a picture etc. so in this regard the PS3 is even better than the 360 that comes built in with high contrasts etc.
let me show you what mags show to us:

http://insidermedia.ign.com/insider/image/article/...
the users: OMG the PS3 sucks, look at that shitty contrast!!! 11
now this is photoshoped, only functions that any cheap TV can deliver aswell (more contrast, less brightness, a bit more color)

I hope this example helps to understand that the PS3 has no disadvantage at all in any game with contrast, color etc.

So having to adjust the controls of your TV in order to get a good image is actually better than just having a good image quality right from the start?
Interesting.

blim, since when does any tv on the market come with good adjustments out of the box. so you have to dial in your preferred settings anyway for once... sorry but this is exactly the dumb stuff that all 360 users are bashing the PS3 with...
think again... what was that with the poor contrasts on the 360 via VGA? what about the preinstalled contrast settings you can choose from via HDMI?
yes very interesting how ignorant some ppl are... any you know too that AC does not look like the IGN screens on your TV... its only the screengrabber defaults that are causing the dull PS3 images.
again why does no pro SLR cam have sharpening and overrated contrast? yes because its up to the artist to choose - all others buy some cheap handycams that have everything preinstalled but are not as good to adjust afterwards.

all the pics show is that AC on the 360 has better contrast (out of the box).
No idea how the contrast in other PS3 games is, but I assume it's remarkebly better. So do you really want to change your tv's settings for every game you play?

why do you assume you have to do this with every game on the PS3? you do this once and thats it! you just can't use the elite 360 on the same HDMI input as the PS3 thats all... why blame the PS3 and not the 360!? they simply have other gamma and colorprofiles - nothing else. its an nvida vs. ati stuff that could be transferred to any pc...
you take screengrabs directly from the console - that has nothing to do with the picture you see on your well adjusted TV set. if the 360 screengrabber or whatever hardware you use to grab games is adjusted this way - why should that be the consoles fault?

Mcerono i understand your argument i do, i for one am a real biatch when it comes to it , so is jackfrost
But why should i keep changing my settings for the ps3 and 360 ? sod that, 360 overall has a better finish i find, personally.

as I said - i can't watch my DVDs on my DVD player on the same input as the elites so why should I be able to play PS3 games on the same input!?
its not a console related problem only - any image device has its profiles! we have to life with it - thats why the more HDMI inputs the better, because you can't have the same comfort of preset adjustments with a HDMI switch!
it's just sad that the PS3 is looking that dull everywhere - imagine ratchet would be that dull!? no way!
I think the elite is on par with the PS3 image quality (not speaking about games) the VGA 360 wasn't at all with its dull and unsharp picture that couldn't be adjusted on most TV's (no color, no sharpening functions on VGA on most TV's)

sure, it the lower contrast on the pics can also be because of the screengrabber working with different settings for the ps3.
anyway... can't wait to play the game. :)

dont' you remember COD3? if it realy is AC that is causing the dullness this time: that would be a shame but still not a problem of the PS3. that would be very annoying to setup the TV each time for AC thats for sure!!
if I would play the PS3 version I would scream for a gamma patch by ubi in this case!
but I don't think so - new dynasty warriors shot:

off topic maybe a little?
First you say it's the color profiles on the consoles, then games. pick one? Or is it just that the developers haven't actually checked what the game looks like on both machines? They just rolled the dice on PS3 and it came out kinda crappy?
I for one, think that the original looks better than the one you photoshopped. meh.
To me there is so little difference, that it doesn't really matter. However framerates do and I hear the PS3 version is a bit sluggish here and there...
<3 blim
edit: sorry I mixed the photos, I like the photoshopped indoors photo more than original. Photoshopped outdoors is still meh.

I overdid it ;-) its just an example to show it... outdoor has too much contrast now.
and it can be the consoles profiles or the games. both is possible - its just a fact that the consoles don't have the same default profiles.
gamespot says the PS3 version runs better...
""There are few differences between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. PS3 owners are blessed with a slightly more solid frame rate, although the 360 version features a little more contrast in the lighting, so it's pretty much a wash. But regardless of which platform you go with, you'll have an amazing and unforgettable game. Assassin's Creed is the kind of game you tell your friends about, and one that should be in your collection."
ign first wrote the PS3 has framerate issues but then deleted it again!?

this is exactly another story that bugs me soooo much ... reviews are just useless, some mag says this, another something else... we need even more demos to try it out ourselfs.

Just saw the long PS3 video. Framerate is far worse than I expected from Sony´s machine. Everything on PS3 runs slower and choppier including screen tearing.
Developers should either better optimise the game engine or remove unnecessary stuff from the game.
