The first 10 minutes: Assassin's Creed

The first 10 minutes: Assassin's Creed

2007-11-15 22:35:06 by BlimBlim

Last minute change! The embargo for Assassin's Creed has been lifted here in Europe too. By chance I had already 2 videos uploaded, so here they are. At Ubisoft's request I'm not showing the real beginning of the game. If you know what happens, please don't spoil the surprise for the others! More videos, including from the PS3 version, and our impressions will follow later today and tomorrow.
Update: Third part available.
Update 2: Added a very short but still interesting video comparison of the 360 and PS3 versions. Thanks to TTP for the PS3 part :)
Update 3: Fourth and likely last video of the 360 version is up. Let me know if you want to see a video of what happens in the city.
Update 6: The PS3 video is back, this time with the right framerate. Again sorry about that.
Update 7: Since some people have claimed that the retail PS3 version ran far better than the review one, I went and bought it to make sure I didn't unfairly compare both versions. So I've done another comparison video, and you'll notice that the end result is still the same. I'm eagerly awaiting some people arguing that my PS3 is either broken, my capture hardware is buggy, or I've simply cheated the video so the 360 version looked better.

Only just managed to watch this video. Before I go any further, I'll tell you I own a PS3. I did have 2 360's but they both died so I invested in Sony's machine. I have to say its pretty obvious to me from the comparison video that the ps3 version is clearly blipping. Watch the background of the city as the camera pans around the character, you can see if you watch right in the middle of the screen, that the ps3 version is blipping. Just before the character jumps, you can see V-sync issues on the tower for the ps3 version. Then there's the jump itself. You can see a noticable jerk halfway through the manouver on the ps3 side of things.

Shame, I was really looking forward to this game and will not now be able to enjoy it fully knowing that I'm playing the more gimped experience of the two.

So unless Blim states it may be something to do with the capturing software he uses that hinders the ps3 capture. I see no other conclusion than that gamespot have got it the wrong way around.

Judging by this vid, its clear that the ps3 verison is the inferior one.

I'm not bashing, flamebaiting, fanboy hating, or trying to offend in any way. I'm simply stating the obvious. If that upsets people, I'm sorry, but you're deluded.

The Comparison is a bit too short to determine, but according to IGN, while in the early levels the PS3 version framerate is passable it gets really annoying in the later episodes whereas the Xbox 360 version does a good job through all the game.

I think that Petrice Desilet (sp) fella has some explaining to do. He said in interviews that both versions would be identical.

He's clearly lying.....

From what I have seen, it isn't even an issue of Contrast.

The dynamic range in lighting just looks shorter in PS3 games.

The contrast thing doesn't bother me, HDTV's have different contrasts, and you can even change contrast in the game. I think the framerate issue could be like bioshock's. Some have horrible framerates sometimes, and others play it with butter smooth performance. I don't know what causes it, but I wouldn't put much value on those words saying the framerate is abysmal.
In the end, it only matters for those that have both consoles. Those that have either PS3 or Xbox 360 should just buy that version.

What i don't like about that particular comparison video is that it's not really running concurrently. The versions are a bit off by a a sec or two and since the camera rotates counterclockwise of Altair, it would appear the PS3 has issues. If the camera were to rotate clockwise, then it'd appear the 360 has issues. Now unless the comparison between the two were running perfectly in sync.... but anyways, if you look closely to the 360 side, it also has some framerate problems, but doesn't seem to be as big as the PS3. Maybe you guys might want to do another recording run to see if that hiccup persists at that scene.

I´ve just tested Assasin´s Creed 360 at different resolutions and that's what I got regarding Vsync:

1920x1080p = vsync issues
1280x720p = vsync issues
1280x1024 = NO VSYNC ISSUES

So obviously someone at Ubi screwed it. I didn´t looked for slowdowns or so in different resolutions, but at 1280x1024 there´s no vsync issues. Maybe they should release a patch or something.

Looks beautiful. PS3 version is really mixed up at the moment, this shows bad frame rate at one part, and yet it looks a little sharper, and the colour is just a question of gamma, not the render... because that will be identical. I assume it's to differentiated between the two versions without a solid line.

thats funny..it shows the same thing as x360, the same part..and you say he is posting bad ps3 videos? yeah right. they are just weak because it looks worse on ps3, if it was the other way arround you wouldn't say a thing. ah, I get it.. you want him to show diferent parts where the ps3 looks better and compare them with parts where the x360 looks worse..what a fanboy.

When I read this it really cracked me up! Seriously, I laughed so loud it shamed me!

I have not much to add but the disappointment of my concluded experience of AC on the PS3. This game was a PS3 exclusive once! This led many to believe that eventually the PS3 version would look as good or better than the XBox 360 verion.

After getting my review copy on AC for the PS3 I dove right into it and tried to enjoy every moment of the game. I did enjoy the game and I still think it's a very remarkable game. Brilliantly crafted and executed! Please don't let the low scores deter you from buying the game. The experience I had with it was better than what I had with Halo 3 & COD 4. I don't have to write reviews just a quick impression on certain games that are part of our monthly sweepstakes. So I can take all my time and really enjoy every game that is send my way.

After finishing AC on the PS3 I had a few niggles about he framerate, screen-tearing and pop-in of textures. But these are simply minor quibbles when you consider how many things the game does so well!

And now you are asking yourself why did I start this post with a concluded experience that left me with a wry taste in my mouth.

This is because after finishing AC on the PS3 I was very curious how the same game would perform on the XBox 360. luckily we also give away xbox 360 games as part of our monthly sweepstakes. The instant I noticed that the Xbox 360 version of this game was running smoother and appeared better visually (color, contrast & lighting) my experience on the PS3 was instantly of a lesser grade than before.

I don't consider myself neither a Sony nor a Microsoft fanboy. I have both systems and really hope that these two awesome machines can keep on producing many more great games for our pleasure. It just upsets me to even realize that there are people out there that have spend a lot of money, given their support and still believing in the mighty Sony and in return they are still getting the lesser version the games. It must be frustrating for them! Many of those people payed the full price for Sony's machine only to see a hefty price cut a few month later. They didn't get any compensation either! But what can you do as a consumer? All you can do is hope that things do get better for the PS3.

I do put the blame on Ubisoft! You could have easily held off both versions of the game a few more months and iron out the creases. At least them everybody is happy when they come to the realization that both games are identical in how they perform! Over here in europe AC on the PS3 sells for 64,95. The Xbox 360 version sells for 59,95 and you also get a better performing game.

I do feel with the lot of you... it would surely help to punish the publishers if we could all afford both a PS3 and an Xbox 360 and simply buy the game that performs the best. This would make them loose sales to the point where they will have to make both games identical in how they perform.

Alas, this isn't the case nor a solution! The truth is what it is and that is that AC on the PS3 wasn't as great as I thought it was after playing the Xbox 360 version.

Are you implying I'm voluntarily trying to put the PS3 version in a bad light? If so I really really want to ban you over this.
It's even funnier when you notice that the IGN comparison pictures look *exactly* the same as mine.
The only mistake we did is with the long PS3 video that had a framerate issue due to an error during the encoding. We promptly fixed that and apologized.
The comparison video is 100% valid, and was done as it should have been done.
Ha well, you pissed me off, hopefully a one week vacation will make you understand that we have nothing to win in the long term by putting the PS3 in a bad light.

Well i run it at 1080p and have only seen tearing a few times, nothing as bad as some Ubisoft games, its fair to say that Ubisoft don't like using Vsync so we should expect tearing from most of their games.

I think people forget that the screens you find on the net are not representative for how they look on your hdtv.They just give you a fairly good idea of how the game looks like, and should be interpreted like that, weither its PS3, 360 or Wii.

Not saying these pics are representative for how it looks, they're not taken under ideal circumstances it seems, but they do paint another picture (atleast imo).

What does confuse me is these conflicting messages on wich version has the better performance.I dont see no reason why Cheboury would lie about his impressions, but then again i dont see why GS and some other sites would say the complete opposite.Who to believe? :/

Well, I think it's not the fault of the PS3 that AC looks worse on it. Ubisoft is the one to blame. Proof: Look at Oblivion, that looks superb on PS3. Runs smoother, has better textures and loadings are shorter than on any other system!!!!! So, it's the know how on programming for PS3!!!! I'm dissapointed. Really dissapointed.

To be honest... Oblivion is better on the PS3 for the following reasons:

1. Better framerate.
2. Shorter loading times.

However, visually the Xbox 360 still looks better with greater texture depth than the PS3. The PS3 version also seems to be missing some trees, grass patches, shrubs etc. Also aliasing is more apparent on the ps3.

PS3 really benefits from an overal lack of dynamic lighting and how the shadows are filtered. This probably results in better overall performance.

But to be honest... I'd rather play the PS3 than Xbox 360, which had terrible loading times and bad framerate.

The reviews for this game are so stupid, they are completely subjective to the reviewers opinion, they are supposed to be objective. I have nearly completed the game and can say that the only 2 reviews that are justified are IGN AU Review and the gametrailers review. IGNORE THE IGN UK AND US REVIEWS, TRUST ME!

Yep, maybe the PS3-version has saved on some points (trees etc.), but that's how it works. In my opinion it was the best version. Why didn't Ubisoft do it like Bethezda (well written?).
Hm, however, I lost interests in AC, just looking forward to Uncharted ^^
