The first 10 minutes: Assassin's Creed
2007-11-15 22:35:06 by BlimBlim
Last minute change! The embargo for Assassin's Creed has been lifted here in Europe too. By chance I had already 2 videos uploaded, so here they are. At Ubisoft's request I'm not showing the real beginning of the game. If you know what happens, please don't spoil the surprise for the others! More videos, including from the PS3 version, and our impressions will follow later today and tomorrow.
Update: Third part available.
Update 2: Added a very short but still interesting video comparison of the 360 and PS3 versions. Thanks to TTP for the PS3 part :)
Update 3: Fourth and likely last video of the 360 version is up. Let me know if you want to see a video of what happens in the city.
Update 6: The PS3 video is back, this time with the right framerate. Again sorry about that.
Update 7: Since some people have claimed that the retail PS3 version ran far better than the review one, I went and bought it to make sure I didn't unfairly compare both versions. So I've done another comparison video, and you'll notice that the end result is still the same. I'm eagerly awaiting some people arguing that my PS3 is either broken, my capture hardware is buggy, or I've simply cheated the video so the 360 version looked better.

Oh and the LE artbook is fantastic.
I really wish the ps3 was the lead platform for at least this game, oh well.
I can say this, I got into framerate issues like 2-3 times in various places, deep ones, like fighting and falling from towers to big hays.
You can always turn down the brightness down like 1-2 stripes in the game and it will look as the 360 version.
Hell, I even turned up one stripe on the 360 because it was way to dark!
The reason why I want the PS3 version is that the controller is smaller and is more comfortable with these type of games, while the 360 is more for FPS hands.
The other thing is that, the PS3 is MUCH quiter, like a small kitten, compared for the white demon so called 360 :D hahaha
One reason I want the 360 version is its custom soundtrack...seriously yesterday I put on some Kingdom of Heaven, Passion of the Christ, The Da Vinci Code...and OMG the game got like 5x better with those music tracks.
I am torned between the two versions, I dont know if I should keep it or trade it in for the PS3 version.
PS. I noticed that gamesites and their comparisons, they do not tend to turn down the gamma on the PS3 version, if anything, they do the opposite and turn it up :S
I turned down the gamma on theJericho demo on PS3 version and compared it with the 360, and it looked identical...only when I turned the gamma down to darker.
Here is the comparison that is better to look at...it looks ALOT different on the PS3 version than what gametrailers showed.

I tried both the 360 and ps3 version I hate to say it, but there is no question the 360 version really pounds the ps3 version into the ground.
If the ps3 was the lead platform then thats a damn shame I think.

It is important for me to know which version I should buy. Framerate drops and screen tearing hurt my eyes and as a Gamespot/IGN reader I could not simply know, which version I should play.
After I saw the last comparsion video from retail versions, it´s clear now the X360 is smoother and look somehow crisper. I don´t really care if its darker I still think you can adjust your TV at home to get picture you´ll be happy with.
So I would go with X360 version but the Problem this time seems to be somehow bigger. Gamespot (better framerate on PS3) vs IGN (better framerate on Xbox360 - this statement was later REMOVED). Hell, where lies the truth?
Thanks to Blim for all the videos and hard work, now I know the truth.;-)

i dont think the game should of been rated a 7
the lowest i think the game should of got was a solid 8 because this game is still very fun. i gone through about 4 assassinations and im still addicted to this game. i can see how it gets a bit repetitive but the game runs so nice and the combat and free running is really great i havnt got tired of it yet.

"Project Assassin" was shown at Microsoft's own X05. A few months later, "Project Assassin" for X360 and PS3 disappeared, but "Assassin's Creed" for PS3 showed up. Later Ubisoft annonced the X360 version as well. I guess Microsoft paid more money than Sony this time.

Both platforms had DEDICATED staff working on them. According to an Ubi coder on quartertothree.com the PS3 actually had MORE staff and resources dedicated to it, but that obviously does not guarantee results if the development tools are not up to snuff.

I think there was a comparison video on Gametrailers or some other site.
I have both, currently playing the 360 version. I've played the PS3 version to block three. Probably going to trade it in, and keep the 360 version. Differences are minimal, but they're there.

I can't compare with the PS3-version so I limit my comments to the 360-version: this is another Ubisoft game which suffers from dramatic screen tearing. How can a developer live with delivering superb artwork being chopped up by horizontal screen tearing lines which undermine the entire graphical concept? Imagine a Van Gogh cut in pieces, or a Da Vinci... would we accept that? No. So why are many review sites still being quiet about screen tearing. At least 50% of all next gen releases on Xbox 360 suffer from this graphical twitch. Causes are lack of development time to polish the gfx engine and/or implementing way too many memory consuming gfx effects (volumetric fog, high detail textures, bump mapping, paralx mapping, high dynamic range, etc.) AT THE SAME TIME. I guess if Ubisoft dropped the 'fog' effect in Assassin's creed, it would already gain much of the needed memory to run the engine without screen tearing. Please give us a patch to turn some gfx options (like 'fog') of so the game runs smoother.

Right Hiscore!
I mean, what kind of a next gen is that if it just goes to show that consoles have not enough resources to handle these next gen graphics. This screen tearing really gets on my nerves.
Before ps3 i've only seen it once in Jak and Daxter 3 on PS2. Hell even Shadow of Colosus never had that shit. It did had significant framerate drops but the thing is the game was so awesome this somehow added to the superbness of it:)
This is a choice for programmers: the either have to do screen tearing maintaining speed, or maintain screen intact by losing framerate. But as i've heard in AC we have both drops and tearing which is really strange and sad as well:(
I personally can cope with framerate drops as long as they are not to frequent and as long as the game makes you wanna play it. But this vertical desync glitch absolutely spoils everything.
And man do i get freaking tired of this fanboy wars. XBox 360 the best this, PS3 up your uretra that, Sony rules. Relax guys, I mean c'mon, the truth is quite simple and leaves no place for denial. They both suck if they can't make the developers respect the gamers.
Cut yourself in two, Ubi, and see what it feels like.

GameTrailers has a comparison. Looks the same as this one. No funny business. Obviously the 360 can run better shaders, and the ps3 can push more polygons (even though the framerate is slower, for whatever reason), but this gamma thing is just ridiculous. It seems like the ps3 team simply chose a different default gamma or contrast setting for their version. Who knows.

Yeah. I just saw the Gametrailers comparison video and its obvious that that the 3360 version looks better than the PS3. The CVG one really looked blurry on both videos. At the very least Gametrailers and Gamersyde were consistent.
