Tales of Vesperia trailer
2007-12-25 09:53:07 by BlimBlim
Again from Namco-Bandau, here is the first trailer of the new episode of the Tales Of... series names Tales of Vesperia. Since it's a 720p video it's clearly not a Wii game, but no platform has been announced.
Update: Looks like the source of the game's page on Namco's site had some interesting indications, since it had Xbox 360 listed in the keywords. Not an official confirmation, but still something.

Seriously, compare this with Dragon Quest 8 and then Eternal Sonata, really does look DQ8 level, besides the resolution...

maybe you should play DQ8 and the various cel-shaded rpgs on the PS2 again before you start proclaiming the truth.

Actually, imo it actually does look like a ps2 rpg but I've only streamed the video. Eternal Sonata looks much better at the moment for me.

I've played DQ8 recently enough to see what's obvious. Resolution will make the images more clear and sharp, but it doesn't make the game even approach Eternal Sonata's graphical fidelity.

Well don't buy it then, because we know games with bad graphics are bad full stop right. ?

I didn't watch it in motion but the caps didn't impress me. The textures on the characters seem rather crappy and since they are going for an anime look there isn't much detail to speak of. But then again the style sort of limit's what you can do with it as well. Still the environments look rather empty and well...not much detail to be seen anywhere at all. But while i'm not impressed i'm not at all disappointed either, this is sort of what i've come to expect from these kinds of games. Let's just hope that it lives up to the expectations of the fans. I personally abandoned "Tales of" after destiny. Sthan was the man.

So basically it's a PS2 game in HD. Graphics of course aren't everything, but I can't see how you could argue these graphics are on par with other 360 or PS3 games (except maybe something like Beautiful Katamari).
Hell you even had the black and white drawings of the heroes , and its the same inkless , clean yet simplistic drawings ... You could give it the unreal engine , it would be a waste and not so much better (except imo for some collision issues)

The simple, clean character models don't bother me, but it would be nice to see more fluid animation. Outside of the battles, the character animation just looks very stiff. Time for the Tales team to learn some mo-cap.

Trusty Bell may have had nice graphics but it was a pretty rubbish game, this could be the complete oppisite and I kind of hope it is, because I don't buy games for pretty graphics.

Jolli: i do check the forums every now and again, but generally i only seem to find new posts either relating to these updates or in the off-topic section ^^
Also i'm not complaining about the graphics, i know that j-rpgs in general (and particularly those who want to have an anime look) tend to have a simpler art style and therefore offers less detail. Though i have to say that simple anime style gfx was not always a mark for the "tales of" series, Phantsia looked incredible for it's time and i can't say i'm disappointed with the work they did with Destiny either. Those were of course 2d, but there's high attention to detail in those games that i just can't say i find in these later iterations.

you said it , only Phantasia was at the top graphic wise when it was released . Destiny was indeed a lazy on the graphic side , since it was just basically a snes game using the cd space of the playstation for anime cutscenes and a few sfx.
However i disagree a bit with you afterward . Tales of Eternia , thought a game i cant enjoy because of its annoying (imo) characters and lame story , featured top notch 2d graphics back then . Just because some gamespot idiot dismiss anything 2d as "ugly" or not awesome , doesnt mean jack .
It featured highly stylised sprites in an hectic tales games with tons of effects , as usual .
Tales of destiny 2 and rebirth were awesomely done too , in the 2d area , and set the bar higher . It just wasnt released in usa and europe .
Lets not even mention the great tales of destiny remake with not only a complete graphic rehaul , but gameplay , story and content one too .
Tales of symphonia on ps2 was quite a feat , given its gamecube lineage , said gamecube game wich wasnt ugly in any way .
The serie lacked seriously in the graphics area around legendia , and only started getting better with Abyss , plagued with loadings and glitchs , and empty backgrounds .

I think that people ARE focusing too much on graphic this gen. graphic dosen't make a video game. Thats all, no need to get mad at me.

neolucifer: Eternia looks great but then again that's about it. Every other aspect of the game sucks dong. And that's not even my opinion, that's a full fledged truth. I can't comment on the other games except for Symphonia which looked alright, but hardly amazing in any way.
