PS3

After going off the radar for more than a year, Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain comes back now with two brand new screenshots. If we're still left in the dark concerning what to expect from the game, these images confirm that it should at least be a very nice tech demo for the Playstation 3.

according to a recent update (dont ask me to find the link) they have surpassed it...they admitted the tech demo from the ps3 anouncement was bang in between uncanny vally where it looked close, but there where wierd things that just broke that connection (womans mouth and her big ass teeth for me) but apparently they've just supassed it?? whether thats true or not remains to be seen. if they've created completely believable human characters then i'll be shocked. since there isnt a single movie which has yet.
They think they have surpassed it, or at least beleive they've done better than most rendering farms have in attempting to do the same thing. I'm not saying that we'll never see believable and realistic characters, I'm saying it's not going to be on the PS3.

I'd say normal. I think it's more effective for a main character not to look too unbelievable, to be able to identify with the char more.

I agree with that vidgames shouldnt mirror reality, though sadly were are heading this way :/
And for prerendered pics these are pretty lame.

Realistic graphics does not mean that it's "virtual doing the dishes DX". Like if you watch a movie, the storyline can be completely fantastic and unrealistic even though it's acted out with real actors on real sets. I wouldn't want to go around solving a dark mysterious murder with freaking paper mario graphics, would you? It's all about context. Certain visual styles fit certain themes better than others.

That said these pictures are pretty much worthless, yes. They say nothing about the game or it's visual...more than that it will feature a face...at least partially :P

The idea is to give us an alternate reality that is easy to escape in. What other reality would be easier than one that represents life well and is completely believable?

i think we've reached a point where these images are so close to realism that the images become visually distracting simply because they aren't truly photo realistic. A lot of artists claim that this is why they almost always take a stylized approach when designing human characters. These graphics are fantastic, but at the same time, they annoy me...

This is pretty amazing even if it's just a graphics demo at this point, I think this looks as amazing as Beowulf the movie if not better. Now picture a game looking as good as that movie did. Thats some serious Graphics... The eyes just have a really life like detail, I've never seen before in a game.

I think if they can pull that off this game is going to the set the bar pretty high up in the air.

And good or not good, Heavy Rain may go down as one of the most amazing looking games to date. That alone makes me interesting is seeing what this game is all about.
Hmm, not sure what the fuss is about.

Anyone care to check out the "Rachel" demo for the radeon 8500 on the ATI website? Takes a bit of digging about, but this stuff was done years ago.

The skin texture is still way too blurry to stand out with even films like final fantasy - spirits within (just google Aki Ross to check out how skin should be done!), let alone Beowulf!

And there's no way it looks as good as Beowulf the movie, dream on.

:o)

the closer a game comes to reality, the more fun it becomes to do things you would not normaly do in reality. eg. in goldeneye - the first time i shot an army guy in the bollocks, and seeing him crouch down in agony!! realism is great in games - because it's where reality can become fun.

not that i don't have fun in my actual reality - i just really like shooting army guys in the bollocks.
