Metal Gear Solid 4 gameplay
2008-01-23 21:08:38 by BlimBlim
Our friends over at Gaming-Age asked us to host a long Metal Gear Solid 4 gameplay video for them, and we gladly complied of course. This was filmed during the CES a few weeks ago, and is definitely not the way the game should be played!
Check out their CES report too!

It seems like MGS4 is getting worse and worse as other games are shown. Graphically it's not impressive, and the gameplay doesn't seem to be any different than the other games in the series.

I can see the downgrade to, specially in the video secuence with Snake talking with Otakon´s robot. The graphics are not stuning, low res textures, smoke effects a little bit...ugly, and the environments look a little bit edgy. I was specting better quality on textures mostly, but I´m dissapointed to see that, and the same robotic animations since MGS2.
The best of the video... the excellent soud effects
The game would be nice, I m not talking about MGS4 like a bad game, I´m only talking about what I see in this video.

You don't need me to tell you people that the graphics have been downgraded, but I can't help it. For one, Snake's hair has difinetly lost a few strings and now look more like a combination of hair pieces just like most of the other games out there. That's not a bad thing, but it's not like the original trailer. I know this video isn't the highest quality, but I have enough evidence before me to see that the textures are a little smeared. And I also got the impresssion that I was looking at the Splinter Cell engine at work. The AI seems to be as dumb as ever. So far from what I see, the gameplay/visuals doesn't warrant the long wait for this game. I'll play it, but I don't have a PS3. Perhaps my friend and I could swap systems when it comes out.

Looks ok, but why the grey hair? Does he pass out werther's originals as a bribe for information? :oP
I can't see the appeal of playing as an old man...

Game looks stunning. And like with all the mgs games you are gonna get frustrated with the controls, the less than bright AI and other oddities. But the quirks are somewhat part of what makes the series so good. In the end you can nothing but love the games.
I for one cannot wait.

Compare the secuence with snake talking with Otakon´s robot, the same secuence that we saw last year in a trailer. The downgrade is important in there

Considering the old trailer was 'real-time' and 'possible only on the PS3' there's not many corners to hide in with the graphical downgrade.
It may just be me, but i just got a whole 'Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter' feel towards the end, not special (certainly no Gears Of War), but not bad either (ie Halo)

This is much better looking than Gears, Art style is a big factor IMO, but then thats subjective I suppose.

I agree with citizenx. Nothing amazing really, nice crisp geomtry but not a vast amount of detail etc. Reading all your comments is almost as much fun as the FFXIII threads, rampant blinkered bulllshit about a GAME that no one knows anything about, but we can pretend we do. I hope this game delivers for all your sakes (snakes)...no pressure Hideo.

Looks amazing to me, the sound design, the graphics, the story telling, all of it. Really intense action, and it really makes you feel like your only one part of a larger struggle, as opposed to the focus of all the attention. I'm so impressed, and considering we've only seen such a small amount of the game, that's saying something.

Game doesn't appeal to me one bit. I prefer the James Bond-esqe setting and style of the Splinter Cell series.
Graphicswise is has plenty going for it, but the animations are just laughable. What's up with the JRPG-esqe running animation. It really looks silly.
Nope, not my kind of game I'm affraid. I was expecting more after all that hype.

I liked the battlefield atmosphere, definitely reminded me of the Africa level in Splinter Cell: Double Agent. I like the camouflage, but it could definitely become a crutch for the player for any situation. It's almost becoming like the Blend command in Ass Creed i.e. you can get away with anything.
Not impressed with CQC animations, and lol at being pwned by baddies when you're next to them (happened all the time in previous games), but that depends whether you suck or not.
Annoyed that reticles for rifles NEVER changes! None of the reticles look any different, but at least there's recoil...i think...i don't remember when seeing that. Seeing that in HD resolution helped a lot with seeing that the graphics are nothing to cry home about, whoever said it's BETTER than Gears of War clearly doesn't have the game, because Gear's much more detailed in every way (i'm no fanboy, actually hate the game).
I really like the level design, giving the illusion of a big world, but still linear. Don't like the traditional transition to the next areas, but don't mind either.
Stupid ass AI as always, I think the MGS games should be awarded awards for Stupidest AI ever, and that's not a hate of the games. Hideo just sucks at AI, should learn a few tricks from Splinter Cell or other stealth games.
LOL at being shot with the Javelin, and STILL SURVIVING! XD

As a owner of all three systems I dont who wins the console race but MGS is not the answer sony needs. The character graphics were perfect but the level itself lacked depth and colors and has a generally poor design. look at the ground and the walls sorry but it hold nothing on halo or call of duty 4. The exclamation marks over the head need to go, its the next gen, time to add real AI (its a trade mark but like the viewing angle its time to evolve). Everthing else was nice though but sony big ticket for me is Resistance 2

Wait a second, even if the graphics were crap, what does that have anything to do with whether or not the game is beneficial to Sony? It's incredibly stupid to think that because the graphics aren't as nice as you were hoping, all of a sudden the millions of people intent on buying MGS4 will suddenly reconsider. Am I getting through?

Game do not look that impressive just because this footage misses what makes MGS series interesting: the non gaming aspect: FMV.

has the dude in the vid played MGS before? it seems obvious that the demo is on the easiest difficulty, and the only way to get the proper MG is ramp up the difficulty,

I hate it when i make an account just because people write posts trying to knock games down a notch. I'll admit I'm a fanboy, but the major draw to any Metal Gear is STORY. At least it has always been the story that captivates me in ever single Metal Gear(2 still could have been a bit better storyline wise). Not everything that comes out today is textures or graphics, the most important parts of any game will come down to game play and a story(if there's really one). Look at Assassin's Creed I played the whole game and it looked amazing and the game play was fun(for a while) but it lacked a story to really drive me to beat the game. If MGS4 is like any other it's the story line that is going to hook you in a keep playing it, and prob some of the boss fights. Flame me if you wish, but I think I bring up a valid point.
