Konami releases six vaguely new images of Metal Gear Solid 4. I'm almost sure I've already seen this gallery somewhere, but we never newsed it here anyway so at least it shouldn't be completely worthless.

I think it looks great, I notice in many JP games that devs spend more time with character models than enviroment detail.

I don't think the textures are all that bad, its just the way the picture is taken, I doubt it is that noticable in motion.

This game has some of the best animation I have seen in a next gen titles so a few muddy textures are nothing.

Lol. I'm sorry, but Splinter Cell is not the "James Bond" approach. Sam Fisher IS a military stealth ninja (he was even called a Ninja by one of the guards in SC: Chaos Theory!). If anything, the James Bond approach is taken by MGS; fun, over the top story (La-li-lu-le-lo for example), incredible amounts of gadgets and weapons (MGS weapon counts dwarf SC), and the main character is incredibly popular with the ladies (hell, Snake hits on every female character except for Nastasha in the original MGS while depending on whether you got version A or B of SC: Double Agent, Sam got it or didn't get it on with Enrica). Tuxedo Snake even confirms Kojima's desire to make Snake akin to Bond.
You're right, I was referring more to the setting/environments and mission objectives when I refered to the James Bond approach. The character isn't all that James Bond-like I agree. As for MGS4, it seems more like slapstick rather than the witty over-the-top James Bond humor.

My first post in all the years ive been on this site:

What a MGS-Fan want from MGS? Best Graphics? Best Gameplay? LOL - No! I mean, MGS (!) speaks for itself. It is the best presented Game, with probably the best western story (Shenmue has the best japanese one ^^) in videogaming-history: and you are speaking about textures! I dont see bad textures, I see bad posts, bad videogamers, videogaming-history-noobs and a damn fucking great game! and no - I have not a ps3 yet (as also a big Ninja Gaiden and Mass Effect-Fan at the moment Im still 360-only). So Haters, GET OUT OF HERE and pls don't buy this piece of history - thats for me!! ^^

Every time a ps3 game is discussed in these forums people tend to bring in Gears Of War for comparison-reason. Why is that?

back on topic: The reason the Japanese focus more on character models is because most of the time Japanese games try to tell an emotional story. A huge important factor for an emotional story, is having character models that can show that emotion through expressions.

...Is....that a real question? In this case, I'd say one of these two reasons:

1. Gears is the greatest-looking console game out, but for some reason is on the extremely underpowered 360 and not PS3. (go figure)

2. Kojima said he'd like MGS4 to look as good as Gears specifically. He praised Gears.

I hope I've been of some help.

I see many fanboys around here. Gears of War is a great looking game, but especially in sequences and not in ingame (*water / blood*). I would also say right behind MGS poor textures there comes Gears. In fact the greatest-looking game out now is definetly Uncharted. Yeah Kojima praised Gears - but definetly not for storytelling. lol

Okay, as an owner of Uncharted I have to say I honestly don't think it looks all that great. It is a very fine looking game, but I have a hard time understanding where all of these "best looking console game ever!" comments are coming from. I know Gametrailers claimed that in their review, but I thought anyone with any sense disregarded that. I do appreciate that the developers chose to use colour, unlike most games these days, but I don't really think the game looks any better than Halo 3, except of course the character models. It certainly doesn't stack up against something like Gears of War, or even Mass Effect.

As for the amount of people bashing MGS now.. Try reading any topic where Halo is even *mentioned*.

What? I mean, Mass Effect? Or should I say (as a big fan) Tear Effect? And Halo 3? Okay I just spend a few minutes on Halo 3 (its always the same so I dont bought it) but better graphics than the jungle, the water (!) or the faces in Uncharted? Uncharted is more the "comic-type" of graphic (cause its deep colorful contrast) but I think, it looks so awesome. Perhaps at the end, in the base, it doesnt look better than gears, but the jungle and the water-effects are THIS awesome. Wow.

But dont care about graphics. I like Mass Effect, Shenmue or MGS more than Uncharted, Gears of even BioShock (thats also better in graphics than Gears in my opinion).

MGS is a deep storytelling presentation-game, with good graphics and solid gameplay. Every hobbygamer should take a copy of that masterpiece. :)

I'm going to knock on Gears even though I love the game. But Gears would not be the best looking game IMO if it had beaches, sunlight, and vibrant colorful scenery. =D Seriously! Heck 85% of the game is dark and murky. Now obviously it'll ruin the whole theme of the game if it was lush like Disneyland, but I believe its flaws are masked by the insanely morbid post apocalyptic atmosphere that is Gears. Take the tech demo with the thousands of locust running through the streets and if you notice the background buildings, they're just low polygon blocks with blurred out textures slapped onto them.

Still, Gears was great and Uncharted's great too. They both are great on their own merits.

MGS4 will be one of the BEST games created ever.
And you complaining about textures? LOL.
Game does NOT need great textures to look like CG.
Just look at CG trailer of some 2000-2002 years, ground usually had weak textures, but still the trailers looked AWESOME.

Anyway, game will sell over 5 mln. copies and will be one of the best games in this gen, like you or not. =))
ONLY on PS3.

"Wow. I'm loving all the wild speculation going on in here. You haven't played the game, how can you dictate what score it's going to get, or that it will be better than it's predecessors?!"

All major Metal Gear Solid (1, 2, and subsistance) releases have gotten at least an average score of 9.2 on gamerankings...

This game seems to be an improvement in almost every possible way.

I'm going to laugh at all the retards TRYING to downplay this game because it's generating more hype and anticipation than Halo 3 minus the ridiculous amount of coverage and advertising, that in itself it's proof that no matter what the hell you say this game is set to turn the gaming world upside down.

I OWN Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, f*cking great looking game, so far the best i've played, HOWEVER, it suffers from the same(or some) issues games running on UE3 do. Screentearing, texture pop-in( AAAAHHEEMM* Gears Of War* AAHHHHHEEEEM), and the overall annoyingly and overly shinny/sparkly look of the textures due to the fact that they are so damn crisp.

Metal Gear Solid 4 achieves what no game, no matter what technical gimmick it throws in(character animation blending, destructible geometry yadda yadda), has ever achieved; and it is the immersing, obsessive compulsive level of detail and organic feel it draws you in with. It's a shame that all you spoiled kids consider "texture work" just the pores on the walls created by some fancy coding, when what truly matters is the artistry and talent that goes into drawing them. I've seen this game running up close (many moons ago that is) and I can confirm you this game is going to amaze even the most cynical and nitpicky.

I didn't hear anyone complain about COD4 having shamelessly pixelated textures, being a FPS. I don't see any other real reasoning behind all the "complaints" about MGS4 other than burning envy. This is game looks amazing, period.

They said the same thing about MGS3 and it bombed, even though it was a technically a very impressive game, probably the best the PS2 ever produced.

The problem, I think is that a game that focuses so much on story and character development is never going to appeal to the casual gamer who only want action games about killing things, and personally I find it very hard to believe anyone buys the MGS games for their gameplay. Even as a PS3 owner I have to say I think the main reason that there's so much anticipation over the game is because it's the first real triple A game on the system. Halo may have been overly hyped, but at least the fans were honestly looking forward to this. The majority of people I see listing MGS4 as a major release this year seem to be doing so out of desperation, more than anything else.

I know a lot of the complaints about the game are coming from envy as well, but come on. If you don't think the same is true for things like Halo as well, then you're just as bad as the people bashing this.

Just because the game didn't sell 8 million copies doesn't mean it bombed. It's still a multi-million seller. MGS4 may not sell as many copies as GTA4 or Halo 3 but I suspect it will still be rather successful, especially in terms of a PS3 game specifically.

So, you're saying that even website and magazine editors alike are anticipating this game just out of desperation? Because they also own 360's i assume, the "triple A" machine". If this was the only AAA title on the PS3 I doubt the console would be where it's at right now despite the success of Blu-Ray

To say that millions of fans of one of the biggest franchises in the industry aren't genuinely excited for this game because it "only" focuses on story and has mediocre gameplay, is just an opinionated statement. In fact, I'm glad that the MGS series is more story driven than revolving so damn much around stealth gameplay, otherwise it'd be just another Splinter Cell; and that's the reason why MGS is MGS and SC is SC. Do you hear anyone eagerly awaiting the next Sam Fisher game? Nah...

Besides, this franchise has been long running it's success on the loyal hardcore fanbase and it will continue to do so. It was never meant to appeal to the casual, which are oftentimes labeled as brainless monkeys with guns, but even this time around the level of complexity in gameplay has been streamlined for newcomers to the series.

And trust me, there is absolutely nothing appealing about Halo for me to feel envy, and there are lots of areas that deserve to be pointed at and laughed.

The MGS series can't bomb. Especially if it's heavy related on story. So you either are following the story and liking it or you are simply not.
I am following the story and I like it, so for me to know more about it, I and many other people will HAVE to buy MGS4 simply because it's the end of the MGS-saga (for Kojima-san atleast). There is no way around it. Kojima created a masterpiece of a story, one wich you will be remembering untill you get old, unlike the other zillion game-stories.
