It took me a few minutes to spot the self-shadowing in the 2nd gif, lol! It's way too subtle, they need to darken it about twice as much. It seems to be just an artistic graphical problem rather than a technical one as surely it doesn't take more processing power to just make shadows darker?
Yeah, I wonder why it's like that. Regardless though, the second gif was from one of the earliest builds, and it looks to me like the self-shadows were more prominent in the latest video.

DOAX2 was a rush job.
Yeah I'm sure Tecmo was just dying to get that one out the door...
I'm also sure they were dying to spend more development time and money on a game they knew wouldn't sell as much as DOA5 or Ninja Gaiden 2...

The gifs you posted aren't really all that compelling when there are dozens of high resolution screens in this topic that are completely lacking any sort of self shadows.
There are self-shadows during the gameplay. For some reason, I don't now why it's not captured in the screenshots. As I said though, I saw an enemy ninja cast his shadows onto Ryu when he grabbed him to the ground and did a suicide attack. Too bad the video was taken down.

The shadows on the baddy in the first pick could easily be cast by the environment.
If the shadows were casted by the environment, then I don't see why the shadow wouldn't already be casted onto the limb that's completely still in the GIF (which you later see a shadow casted on as the fiend falls down).

I could be wrong vspectra, I'm just not sold on the concept. I'm sold on the game twenty times over though. Also...

That does not describe a "self" shadow :)

If the shadows are casted onto other characters, I don't see why the technology wouldn't allow it to be casted onto yourself. ;) Generally, self-shadows in games will cast shadows onto your character as well as other objects in the game. But, since the screens don't depict any sense of self-shadows, maybe it's something their still experimenting with and it might not make it into the final game.

Anyway, since TN went through the time and difficulty to even get it to work, I hope they manage to get it in there.

Ninja Gaiden 2 news comes up, new screens/videos, people watch it, starts nitpicking the graphics.

Thats what I have been seeing alot, quite sad.
I for one loved the visuals in NG Sigma, it WORKS well, but in NG2 they have stepped up with small details from NG Sigma like blood effects and the details for Ryu which is awesome.

But I am glad I am not a nitpicking person in terms of visuals, I see the game as whole.

Fastpaced action, awesome gameplay, great animations, challenge, cutting bodyparts...brutally, amazing soundtracks from Team Ninja again, great visuals that works fine...that's what I want.

Sure we all expected awesome visuals on 360, but Team Ninja saw that NG Sigma engine worked very well for their needs with extra touch ups and they went for it.

Good thing Team Ninja focuses on gameplay formost than graphics when they already have a good engine up and running.

Just can't wait for May for the demo and June for the actual game though, my GOTY be default :D

PS. About Sonia...she looks quite cool, but her haircut is very similar to Dante from DMC3 (which I hate, but Sonia is a girl so the haircut fits her :P), and the black and white handguns...*sigh*

Overall, I say whoever made that photoshop hair on Sonia should be like that or the concept one, much better.
