Xbox 360 PS3

NaturalMotion has revealed a new tech demo for their engine euphoria, which will debut in Grand Theft Auto IV. The video shows how game characters interacts with objects, and this has gotten a lot of praise in the GTA previews. Star Wars: Force Unleashed is another of the many upcoming games that will use it.

Wow that video was awesome, this tech demo truly translates perfectly into a game unlike 99.9999% of the tech demos.

I consider this to be graphics related. How someone falls after getting shot has no bearing on gameplay, but it LOOKS better/more realistic.
For me graphics are all about visual appeal. Something that can be captured in a picture (that's why a lot of people refer to "photorealistic" graphics, animation for me is not related to graphics). However that doesn't matter as all I want to expess is that not everything in the game industry has to take the Cry Engine approach and create photorealistic graphics. There are a lot of other things to improove on and animation is maybe one of the most important.

It can however also influence gameplay. If you ever played a football game (and I mean the REAL european football :P) you'll notice that a tackle in the game looks quite a bit off: whenever a tackle is successful or not is a mystery to me, one player can tackle the air and the player running 2-3 meters near him falls to the ground. With the engine they can do a much more realistic approach to tackling. Also injuries can be simulated and players who stand up after the tackling and go on playing.

Also ever played Assasins Creed? Imo they've done a very good job with the crowd interaction. When you run into one you can be thrown back or loose ballance, it was just not very realistic. However it'd be sooo much better with the euphoria engine doing the job instead of the preredered motions. Then there wouldn't be the "IF you run into him DO" that options which are 100% predictable but sometimes frustrating. So in the end if he runs into another person there is a chance of him getting knocked to the ground depending on MANY factors, even on which foot set on the ground etc...

Thus it can alter the gameplay. Same with swords. Depending where he's hit he could react diffrently.

Just watched it, and the ONLY thing gameplay-wise that looked like it was affected by euphoria was the guy getting his legs tangled in the other guy's legs. The fall down the rock face looked fantastic... but that's not a gameplay issue.
Yes it is. In a previous GTA game he would have smashed down on that first rock, taken a per-set ammount of damage, and then the animation to stand up would play..
Here, due to the euphoria system and his angle of decent relative to the angle of the rock, made him roll down to yet another bunch of rocks, resulting in more damage to his body..
I'd say thats a pretty big gameplay altering event.

And in that other leg-tripping example, if that guy tripped on someone, and fell to the ground.. He can no longer fire his weapon or chase someone or attack or even defend himself. I'd say thats a pretty big gameplay altering event.

Or when the guys get their hands stuck in the car doors, then they cant run away, they cant shoot at the car, they cant call the cops, they can only hang on until they drop.
I'd say thats a pretty big gameplay altering event.

I don't play soccer games, so I can't really comment on that. Injuries can be simulated with or without euphoria.

K, that makes sense. I hadn't really thought about crowd interactions.

Euphoria's not necessarily needed for this.

I wouldn't. Plenty of games change the amount of damage you receive based on the angle of the surface you're falling on. GTA IV's falls just look better.

I already mentioned this.

Again, euphoria makes this look good, but it's not actually needed to make someone's hand get stuck in a door.

Things that can't necessarily be captured in a picture pertain to graphics though. Certain textures and surfaces often look MUCH better in video than in a picture. I do see what you're saying though, and I agree that euphoria is fresh direction to be heading.

It's very hard to do that. Again accounting for all the possibilitys is quite difficult and not possible yet. The engine makes it alot easier to implent these features because the engineers don't have to account for every possibility seperately. The work increases linear to the amount of possible injuries. That's way too much work to do. With the engine in place the engineers do the work a single time and don't have to worry about the rest.

And laughed IRL when I saw that drunken Nico vid. That's almost like me when I'm extremly drunk.

Looks amazing. Now if they could combine how realistic objects move in the source engine and how realistic people move in euphoria, and we could be headed somewhere amazing in the future.

If you look at IGN's video review you can see the npc characters react using the same physical rules as you. It's actually really cool. one thing that is missing from many games is not only realistic "deaths" but the time before and after that makes it much mroe immersive.

That's the hot thing. Sense of self-preservation. They try to keep their heads protected from surfaces they're about to hit. But if they'd animate a character with only this, you'd need a huge CPU or whatever that's needed to do the maths.

It's a great tech - so good in fact, that it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it gets swallowed up by a publisher, like EA, as they did with Renderware.

Played GTA IV over a friend's house and I gotta say that the euphoria engine is absolutley INCREDIBLE. Hands down best thing about the game. It lends a sense of realism that is incredibly immersive and you never stop seeing new things that make you say wow! Every shoot out is different, the way they react to bullet hits and the environment. If I had to describe it the best way would be to think of the scene in BladeRunner when Harrison Ford shoots the replicant Zhora in the back and there's and explosion of blood, she reacts to being shot, stumbles, falls over, rolls, gets up again, keeps on going, is shot again and falls through a plate glass window. Absolutely amazing. Any game without this tech pales into comparison. If they have any sense at all Capcom will include it in Dead Rising 2 and I will never stop playing that game!
