Xbox 360 PS3

Here is that much (?) awaited time, the video comparison of both PS3 and 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto IV by Dot50cal. And in the end, the differences seem to be totally meaningless. Some speak about aliased shadows, 630p and other niceties, but what I see here is a slight difference in tint. But I guess fanboys will find much to argue about anyway.
We'll do another video showing what should (or not?) be the big difference between the game, the famous pop-ins.

the difference is very minor, I own the 360 version and to tell you the truth, I dont really notice the popup
I've noticed some pop-up that actually interferes with the gameplay a bit. While driving really fast down a long straight stretch of road, I've had pedestrians just phase into existence like 20 feet in front of me making any attempts at dodging them impossible. It didn't bother me one bit, but my roommate has had solid objects appear like 5 feet in front of him causing him to be ejected from the car and take damage, and this occurred during police chases. That shit could get annoying if it happened too often.

While I mostly agree with the overall point of your post revengine, keep in mind that many people own both platforms and these types of comparisons may be helpful to them. It's not just fanboy fodder.
I agree completely, a comparison is very handy for those who own both and if I owned a 360 I'd most likely have the 360 version just because of the extra DLC seeing as that is the only real advantage. The reason I was looking for a comparison was to see how R* handled development for both versions and it seems to me they've done a pretty fair job. But I think all developers (who can afford it) should take note from Activision who had 2 separate teams develop CoD4 from the ground up for both systems. Which leads to my final point; posters who come here and start declaring that Sony is doomed because OMG the textures in the 360 version are SO MUCH BETTER really need to get a grip. If anything, this is not the fault of Sony's console, as anyone who has played 3rd party PS3 exclusives such as Drakes Fortune, Heavenly Sword, R&CF:ToD, R:FoM, and GT5 would know. Gorgeous games are obviously quite possible for the PS3, the developers just need to learn (or perhaps re-learn) what they're doing.

True. But the main issue here, as someone pointed out earlier, is all the talk about how the PS3 would spank the 360's ass and whatnot. Even when assuming that the PS3 version looks slightly better than the 360 version, it's still laughable when you think of how crappy the 360 supposedly is and how extremely powerfull the PS3 supposedly is.

This has mainly been done by the fanboys obviously, so it's to be expected whenever a multi platform game looks better on the 360 that the 360 fanboys will throw the waterballoon filled with crap back at the PS3 fanboys. Just like how all the PS3 fanboys whined about Halo3 being 630p (or whatever) and now GTA IV on the PS3 runs at a lower res than the 360 version. What do you expect the response to be?!

It takes two to play that game, and fanboys of both "supported platforms" make themselves look more and more stupid with each multi platform release.

popup/popin is present in BOTH versions. Anybody who says the ps3 versions is vastly superior because it doesnt have popin should take note of 2:45 in this.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33470.html

Also note just how much sharper the textures look on the 360 version, as well as a noticable draw distance difference...which could be explained by this.

http://www.gametrailers.com/viewnews.php?id=5868

Now couple that with the thousands of posts that are littering forums about ps3 freezing.. and the fact that is now been confirmed that the 360 versions sold an estimated 60,000 more copies in the uk, making the rumoured 3-1 thing mute. And it all becomes pretty funny how the fanboys latched on to "slightly better AA" from IGN's review, and considered it to mean the 360 version useless.

Personally I wouldn't argue for either version being vastly superior to the other. Any difference (other than the extra DLC for the 360) is basically an aesthetic preference. What one version has, the other counters with something else. 360 = higher res, PS3 = less pop in (notice I said less, not none - I did notice watching the video of the first link you supplied especially during the flying scenes the PS3 had noticeably less pop in) and more solid frame rate. Oh, and BTW, the freezing is happening on both systems. I've said this before, although not here, that the real differences between the consoles will be seen in the exclusives and not in the multi-platform games.

It really doesn't look like shit though for its size. I get it if you just aren't a fan of GTA all together; I used to pretty much hate it, but this one has been pleasantly surprising.

This game easily deserves a 10...at least no less deserving than other games that have gotten 10s. (total score mind you...not just graphics)

I own both the 360 and PS3 versions of GTA IV and have clocked up roughly 62 hours on both, roughly split 50:50 between them.

IMHO the Xbox 360 is the best looking version... the 720p resolution plus 2X anti-aliasing gives it a sharper, hi-res look although there's still some jaggies mainly in the backgrounds. The PS3 version looks softer, almost blurry in comparison and is noticeably more aliased and this is very apparent in the cutscenes were edges have a serrated look. I can tell it's lower resolution than the 360 version... cars look jaggier and backgrounds look slightly rougher with overhead cables tending to look more like a series of dashes than straight lines. The HDR lighting is more pronounced on the PS3 but the Xbox 360 version seems to have better colours. As for pop-in, I can't honestly say I've noticed much if any differences between both games, it's noticeable in both but never annoyingly so. Finally the 360 version has the better framerate although neither version's is perfect.

PS3 version: 640p, no anti-aliasing, FP16 HDR lighting
360 version: 720p, 2X AA, FP10 HDR lighting

To conclude both games are identical in terms of content and gameplay but there are differences in the visuals that mean that which you prefer is purely down to personal taste. For example, not everyone like AA in games but personally I find the PS3 version looks rougher and runs slightly worst than the 360 version but I love both games regardless... it really is an outstanding game on both platforms.

Peace.

P.S. Both games were tested on a Sony Bravia D3000 HDTV at 720p using HDMI and with identical picture settings.
