GRID demo online
2008-05-08 18:14:38 by Manager
Codemasters today released a demo for GRID on the Marketplace while PSN and PC demos are planned to go up later this week. Here are some images and a video from the quite impressive demo. As you will see in the video, the AI is pretty rough and won't hesitate to use heavy force to go past you. As you play the demo, you'll see that the game is more Arcade than sim - meaning that some people won't like the way the game use drifting, but personally I like what I've seen so far.
Update: First video is up, one lap in Germany.
Update 2: Drifting event in Yokohama!
Update 3: Let's be done with the best looking track of the three: San Francisco. I'm sure the fans of MSR and the first PGR will be delighted to see that track!

I like the visuals, I really think over all it’s the best looking racer out right now (considering demos). The presentation is powerful which I like after the boring GT5P. The damage is really cool and cars can flip, which is something most racer forget.
It’s a bit like PGR which I really like but don’t play anymore due to the stupid wheel support of the 360.
But what really let me down was the wheel steering. I got a G25 with a Playseat Evolution for my PS3 and good racing games but in this game it is horrible to drive with the wheel. GT5P may have a dead boring presentation and a horrible online mode but the wheel steering in it is perfect, I simply can’t imagine it any better at the time.
In Grid it just doesn’t feel right whatever I do, whatever I adjust. Using the normal degree option the cars will shoot around corners like playing with the pad, either you steer not enough or already too much. Using 900° it’s impossible to drive the corners at all because they weren’t made for 900° steering like in real life.
The game got tons of options to customize this and that for wheels (like Dirt) but only two useless degree options: 900° and standard which is probably 240° or something.
After getting upset about the wheel steering I played with pad and it was okay. With gamepad I could come to like this game, yet I swore never to play a racing game with pad anymore buying a 400€ wheel and chair combination… hence I’m disappointed.

I totally agree with you on that one Ishigami. I played with the 360 wheel and even while it is not 900° it's hell to steer with since you can't find an adequate angle to put the wheel to steer properly through the corner and you just end up swerving all over the place, and like you said it was quite disappointing(especially for my friend since he kinda bought the wheel for that game).
But leaving that factoid aside the game as a whole is quite enjoyable, as many of you have pointed out the handling is very arcady but it doesn't remove any of the fun from the game. once I removed all the driving aids and get the hang of how the game played I enjoyed myself. Especially the drifting aspect of the game, sure it may be easy as hell to do but being able to drift every corner of the course without loosing your combo just wants to make me scream ''OH F**** YEAH!

Beh. Do anyone really enjoy these physics? PGR hit a sweet spot. It was arcadey but you could actually get a real feel for every car. This is just trash. The american cars are particularly horrible.

Managed to play the demo last night, wow!
Absolutely loved it, it even addressed me by name! (that scared me...) :o)
Especially the San Franscisco race, awesome; when you hit the cicanes properly, a real buzz. Damage is sweet too, especially when you start getting feedback from your race team about what is going wrong with the car; it changes the way you race.
A purchase, defo.

This game is not even a bit sim, it's very arcade with crap controls except the USA race.
The controls in EU and Japan are so strange, very sensitive, there is no feeling and when driving in cockpit view or any other view from inside it feels and looks like you are floating over the track, very strange like you are aquaplaning in every corner, bah.
The damage isn't that great aswell, you can crash like mad before you can feel any difference on the handling and sometimes your car is immmediately destroyed.
The only thing i like about the demo is the USA race, it feels like a complete different game.
I was playing the USA race online a bit and i have to say i like the USA race because the handling of the car is pretty good and way more realistic then the EU race, Japan is total crap.
I almost pissed into my pants in my last race it was so funny, we had a massive crash really massive, all 12 carsh crashed in the 2nd cornes, yes the complete grid, it was so funny and the framerate droped at about 3-5fps
