Xbox 360

Epic and Microsoft drop the bomb and release the first gameplay video of Gears of War 2. Two minutes of extreme violence and fire, for what appears to be an explosive hyperbole of the first title. Visually, it looks stunning.

This looks like a very good-looking videogame. Killzone 2 looks like a CG feature film. 'Nuff said.
I guess you didn't bother watching the Gears Of War 2 video then? Because THIS looks like a CGI feature film! Tell me how the graphics could be improved? Sure, it could be more colourful but it's the style Epic have gone with and unfortunately too many games are lacking in colour. (Including your precious Killzone 2.) However it's not the 90s anymore and colour isn't really a technical issue. (I guess that more colourful textures would take more memory in a way but that would be to do with colour quality and detail more than actually having more colourful graphics. I doubt colourful games like Nights or Mario 64 have better textures than Gears Of War, lol!)

To the people complaining that although there are swarms of locusts in the background you can't shoot them should watch the video again. He DOES shoot them but the video cuts to further along in the level so you might have blinked and missed it. The video jumps to further points in the level a lot of times too so whoever claimed that this showed the entire level is wrong. And talking about the locusts again, I'm sure that once you're on the ground you'll have swarms of locusts attacking right in front of you because that's what one of the guys from Epic told IGN in an audio interview.

Also to the people complaining about lack of background interaction are idiots because. 1. This level took place on a vehicle and the player had limited space to move around in, exactly how much interaction could have happened? 2. Despite that there was the opportunity for interaction, a fixed machine gun on the vehicle that Marcus could use. (Or INTERACT with for those who are a little slow getting the point.) 3. Didn't you see the original GOW2 reveal? They demonstrated destructable environments. I don't think they would demonstrate that then not have it in the game. (OK, it's possible that they could demo something cut it from the final game (I'm looking at you Bungie and your Halo 2 demo!) but I doubt they would since they made such a point about having destructable environments.) 4. THIS IS 2 MINUTES OF 1 LEVEL THAT TAKES PLACE ON A VEHICLE, SO HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY JUDGE THE ENTIRE GAME'S LEVEL OF BACKGROUND INTERACTION ON THIS VIDEO???!!!

To the person who complained about it looking like an arcade shooter-fest, if you don't like arcade games then you have no business playing videogames, go have fun with a spreadsheet program or something.

As for Uncharted, yeah it's got great graphics that are up there with the best of them. However, from all the videos I've seen the actual gameplay area seems quite confined and I've only seen a few enemies on screen at once, plus it has a completely different art style to Gears Of War so comparing them does seem a litle pointless. (Having said that I think GOW2 does beat it simply because there seems to be more background you can see, more happening on screen and it's possibly more detailed although Uncharted is more colourful. Yes, Uncharted's jeep sequences look great but notice that the viewing angle and the positioning of trees and rocks allows them to reduce the draw distance so there's less background they need to render.)

Finally don't you think that considering the PS3 came out a year after the Xbox360 and has been out for a year and a half already it should have more to show than 1 or 2 games (that have been built exclusively for the hardware) that may possibly look slightly better than the best looking Xbox360 games but it's highly debatable even among industry experts? I mean look at the PS2 and Xbox, the Xbox clearly had better graphics from day 1 with launch games like Halo, DOA3, AirForce Delta Storm and PGR. So please give it up PS3 fans, both consoles are pretty much as powerful as each other and when you try to claim the PS3 is so much more powerful you just look foolish because of the overwhelming number of multi-platform games that are better on the Xbox360. Just admit that Sony have over-exaggerated and under-delivered again. (Toy Story graphics on the PS2 anyone?) Just be happy that Blu-Ray won the next-gen video format war (albeit in a completely unethical and consumer-unfriendly way) and you got a "free" Blu-Ray player. (Well, if you bought the PS3 after its drastic price cut you really did get the Blu-Ray free even if you don't count the PS3's HUGE subsidization before that.)

I was definitely more impressed with the new Killzone 2 footage. This doesn't look horrible by any means but it's obvious they maxed out the 360 hardware with the original.

LOL you never cease to amaze me, you always have to have a small pop at the 360 in some shape or form, you are getting quite skilled in how you hide it though.

They maxed out the Xbox360 hardware in Gears Of War 1 yet this looks even better and has more going on on-screen? Hmmm... I guess this must be a video of the first Xbox720 game then?

I'd be VERY inclined to disagree. They obviously did not max out the 360 hardware with the original if this one has better lighting, better water, better destructible environments, and many more characters on screen at once. Plus, we've only seen such a small portion, and I doubt they showed us the most impressive stuff. Best looking console game I've seen any footage of yet.

Did you not read any of the other posts in this thread? Did you really need to bring KZ2 back into this?

Lol, this thread's still alive ey...I might as well join in once more before it's too late. ;)

I must admit, I can't stop watching this footage and what mostly impresses me is the scenery. It's really beautiful and it all looks a bit more vibrant which it really needed imo.

And seriously, motion blur and depth of field in this game is very well excecuted. Very few games manage to pull those effects off properly.

I wasn't all that hyped for this game as of yet, but this footage has definitely won me over. Bring it on Epic!

I just love the cinematic feel to it. It all feels so intense, like there really is a war going on. Therefore, Epic have certainly kept to their promises!

I just can't wait to see what the multiplayer has to offer now.

I just hope they don't try to make the MP better by beefing up the number of players too much. More isn't always better in this case; some games are better suited to fewer players with more intimate combat.

But if they figure out a way to still keep the Gears feeling and not have it turn into just a bigger clusterfuck, then all the power to them.

Yeah, I agree. They shouldn't increase it by too much because it just doesn't suit Gears in my opinion.

Perhaps, 6v6 pt 8v8 tops?

More game modes would be nice as well.

I think they could possibly go up to double and keep the same intense close team effect but any more than that and you're right, it would just be a big free-for-all frag-fest thing that wouldn't quite be the same. (Of course it could be even even better for some people as a big free-for-all frag-fest but I think most GOW multi-player players understand what you and I mean and would prefer smaller teams.)

It really depends on the game modes. I would like to see the classic Gears 4v4 mode return (since, aside from the DLC addition, they're all just variations of the same mode). Maybe some of the new modes could up the player count. We could have the best of both worlds.

One major annoyance I had in Gears 1 is the switching of weapons and selecting/throwing nades. They really need to include a seperate button for throwing nades and get rid of the D-pad weapon select. It's horrible to say the least.

As for MP, I quite enoyed it at first but it started to get really annoying after a while. It's just too slow paced to my likings I guess. I don't expect them to change that and I don't care as I'll stick with COD4 for MP. The SP is where it's at for me with Gears 2. I just hope it'll last longer than 5 hours this time around.

I disagree. I don't want grenades as a hotkey in every shooter. Having to switch to frags/smoke/whatever makes their use more deliberate in a way. You can't just grenade spam or throw set grenades when they're a pick-up and you have to actually think to use them.

You have to think to use them in COD4 or Halo3 or whatever game as well. I see where you're coming from, but it's not like it requires more skill to use nades in GOW. It's just a different approach, and one I personally hate at that.

To each his own I guess.

Switching between weapons and nades takes time, so you have to make sure you aren't vulnerable before switching to them to use them in Gears. I guess that's where the thinking comes in.

If you had read any of the posts in what led to and comprised a very shitty thread as well as read the bold warning about being banned, you wouldn't have said what you had said and you wouldn't have been banned.

You mean like...reloading? That's not thinking, it's second nature if you've ever played a shooter before.

I guess so. The risk-benefit of reloading has to be weighed as well: do I risk exposing myself by reloading in order to get a new clip? If I don't, I may not have enough ammo to win my next encounter.

And I mean, you are vulnerable when tossing nades in Halo and CoD, but I guess not as much as you are in Gears.

Yeah, I suppose that makes sense alright. There is indeed a bit of thinking ahead involved.

I stand corrected.

That plays into my previous point. Having a hot-key to throw a grenade isn't thinking in the same way that having to ready the item is before using it, it becomes second nature. Having to switch to your weapon, item, etc before using it adds an extra step to the thought process and reduces the inclination to use it as a knee-jerk sort of instinctual action.

In the same way, while I like having a hot-key for nades and melee attacks in some games, I wouldn't want it in every shooter. In Battlefield 2 for example, having to quickly switch to your knife in order to use it really does increase the skill level required to pull it out and quickly get that melee kill in the heat of battle.
