PC Xbox 360 PS3

Finally, will say some, Prince of Persia: Prodigy is unveiled through these first screens with an awesome style. Really, it's wonderful, and gives Level 5 a run for its money in the graphical domain. Big surprise for me, knowing this game will be released before the end of the year.

to be honest, i cant help but be disappointed they choose to give it a cartoon cell shaded look. I really wanted Assassins creed with monsters.

Ofcourse this allows them to throw the game out much quicker, but with this and "Donnie Darko" voice overing it..i'm not too jazzed just yet.

Reminds me of when The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker was shown. People bitched and moaned to high heaven about how Nintendo had ruined Zelda, but the game was fantastic and looked great.

I would be 1/100th as interested if it looked like Assassin's Creed...and even less if it looked like Assassin's Creed with monsters.

Also, I don't agree with this whole "if it's cartoony, then it's childish" mentality. Not all cartoons are for kids. Plus, Sands of Time looked kind of like a Disney movie to me, in essence making it look more childish than this.

i really hate how people are saying the backgrounds look flat when we havent seen the game in motion yet... in a cell shaded game everything looks flat in screenshots lol

I skimmed through the GI article on this, and it sounds decent enough. With the way they talked about the female companion, it seems like the creators were inspired by Ico. I'm not sure how I feel about the art style though. A little unfitting for a western game.

there is nothing "next gen" about this, this could be done on a ps2.

"next gen" should not be cell shaded! that was last gen attempt to make a game look better than the hardware could support and have room to slack on graphics because it really isnt that demanding. a "next gen" game should push the graphical limits and reallity, this is not even close.

it doesnt take a next gen console to play a comic strip. its a glorified comic come to life. the type of detail in this game is like a drawing nothing graphically complex, not going to push the consoles with this one.

imagine if gran turismo prologue was done in cell shading, that wouldnt even be close to what it is now, no one would say that it was a next gen game and no one would praise it.
You couldn't be more wrong. There are a lot of people out there who are sick of games attempting to look as real as possible (me including). It's still A GAME, this is the virtual world. By copying the reality it just limits itself in its possibilitys.

Your compairson is just out of place. Polyphony calls their game a simulation, simulating real life physics and looks. PoP never tried to simulate realism in any way. For a game made up by just imagination it's more suitable to have a certain art style applied, and imo Ubisoft have done a good job on that one.

And I have to disagree with the people saying it looks like a comic. Show me one comic that comes close to that art style, it rather reminds me of a paint, and all the textures look like they're painted. It's NOT just the cell shading why people like it, just take a closer look at the textures. I've never seen a similar art style before.

The games architecture and clothing is originated from the oriantal culture. I don't see any connection to a "western" game, just that it's made by western devs.

If this was being made my Eastern devs, would you still have your apparent apprehension regarding the style?

As a professional storyboard artist in animation I've got to say - nice storyboard artwork. Can't see any screen direction though, so it's a shame about the line cross... ;)

What exactly isn't detailed enough? Where is there a lack of complexity?
Big flat polygonal floor and walls. Break that floor up into tiles or something and it'll start looking interesting, I don't know how well normal mapping would work with this style, probably not at all.

Not a single Pokemon game has ever been cell-shaded, and the Pokemon anime is based on the games, not vice versa.

I have no faith in Ubi. They simply cant deliver AAA tittles.

Nice art direction though, heavily inspired by Shadow of the Colossus and Okami adapted for american teens.
Okami was not the first ever game to be cell shaded, and acording to an interview with Edge, their inspiration for this actually came from the Street Fighter IV trailer, which looked amazing. They wanted to do a game that actually looks like that.

Ubisoft also do a lot of great work, I'd consider many of their games to be AAA. Some of it is complete garbage, but that doesn't detract from their quality titles.

Cell Shading takes a lot of work, I wouldn't under estimate it. And again, I far prefer the cartoon look to yet another "gritty/dark" tone. Also, I think you're a little confused. Jake Gyllanhaal is playing the Prince in the movie, but as far as we know, that has nothing to do with the game.

Beautiful

They can achieve a much more fantasy persian tale with this artstyle. I can see some amazing backgrounds

this is next gen cel shading, the game looking more closely to art with better shading techniques

Being a fan of the prince of persia series, definite buy upon release
