Xbox 360 PS3

Microsoft showed some of their console's upcoming RPGs in Japan today, and a bunch of trailers were released on the Marketplace. First out here is Star Ocean 4, and we might have a 720p version up here later. The trailer confirms a 2009 release and nothing about Playstation 3.
Update: Trailer captures added.
Update 2: Added the 720p trailer.

thank you for that detailed analysis wuffyx, hopefully that will enlighten some people that seem to beleive an RPG will sell better just because its on a sony platform despite things like install base, and attach rate.

The guys at Square are really shooting themselves in the foot by making all these 360 exclusive games. Look at Enchanted Arms and Eternal Sonata. Those publishers realized they made a horrible mistake, and both games went to PS3 eventually. I mean even Ninja Gaiden 2 sold only 20,000 copies in Japan on day one. That's pathetic.

Bitter tears?

This is the one for Lost Odyssey from the Feb 2008 NPD US Sales Data
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1019143...
360 CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE* ACTIVISION 7-Nov 296.2K 1
360 DEVIL MAY CRY 4* CAPCOM USA 8-Feb 295.2K 2
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE NINTENDO OF AMERICA 7-Feb 289.7K 3
PS3 DEVIL MAY CRY 4* CAPCOM USA 8-Feb 233.5K 4
WII GUITAR HERO III: LEGENDS OF ROCK* ACTIVISION 7-Oct 222.9K 5
NDS MARIO AND SONIC: OLYMPIC GAMES SEGA OF AMERICA 8-Jan 205.6K 6
360 LOST ODYSSEY MICROSOFT 8-Feb 203.6K 7
360 TUROK TOUCHSTONE 8-Jan 197.7K 8
PS2 GUITAR HERO III: LEGENDS OF ROCK* ACTIVISION 7-Oct 183.8K 9
360 ROCK BAND* MTV GAMES/ELECTRONIC ARTS 7-Nov 161.8K 10"

Now how many JRPG achieved that status without being called a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest? :hehe: And that's just first month of sales...I'm pretty sure other people bought the game after its initial release.

Another thing I'd like to point out for that is despite LO being within the same month as Devil May Cry, it still got pretty good sales.

While I cannot find the other statistics right now, Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata have at least gotten 50,000 sales which is the default average sale of a JRPG title in the US.

And compare that with this...

Here's the March 2008 NPD Sales Data
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27952...

FEB 2008 NPD
360 LOST ODYSSEY MICROSOFT 8-Feb 203.6K

While its not for a major platform check out the sales of Final Fantasy Crisis Core. Interesting eh? While its definitely higher than Lost Odyssey, its surprising that a no-name game (with no franchise origins) got decent sales in a platform that is considered to be an FPS box and is more expensive than a PSP.

Of course lets see the much anticipated sales of a Final Fantasy title (a prequel to the most popular FF series...FF7) did against an FPS title. I haven't played FF Crisis Core but I've heard a lot of positive rave about it from my friends who also follow JRPGs. It's not a bad title but looking at the sales data below:

360 TOM CLANCY'S RAINBOW SIX: VEGAS 2 UBISOFT Mar-08 752.3K
PSP CRISIS CORE: FINAL FANTASY VII SQUARE ENIX INC Mar-08 301.6K

Wow...that's quite a lead for Rainbox Six Vegas there. And considering the platform 360 is much expensive than the PSP that is certainly impressive and to some extent shows a hint of the extent of the JRPG 'dream' influence..

But wuffyx You're talking about NA sales. broman Was talking about Japan sales. Its obvious the NA 360 sales of JRPG will be good.

Japan sales:
LO's First week LO: 56,251, Not as big as NA uh?

And broman was right about Enchanted Arms. They made a PS3 version because EA(360) sold poorly in japan.

http://www.videogamer.com/news/11-09-2006-3585.htm...

I think you misunderstood what broman was trying to say and hes right.

Dude common.... You WILL NOT die if you play the game 15 minutes after getting home. Installing the game will only give you benefits, and if you have a 20 gig ps3 which not many people do, you can easily and inexpesively upgrade the HDD as opposed to the 360 in order to have enough space for several game installations. Why you wont accept that it is to the players advantage to cut down on loading times is simply blindness.
Its even more idiotic to say that you'll rather stop playing in the middle of your adventure to switch a disc instead of getting ready for it beforehand and sitting comfortably in your couch the whole time. You sir are in one word, a FANBOY.
I never said I would die, I said it's more of a hastle than having to switch disc. All the PS3 fanboys seem to making such a fuss how much better the PS3 is because it doesn't have to switch disc, ignoring the fact that big games like these have MULTIPLE mandatory install periods. I'm not talking about games like GTA IV where you install it once, then it's done, I'm talking about larger games, like MGS 4, where you have to stop mid game, to install new areas.

How is that any different from having to stop to switch discs? In my opinion, it's far worse. If that makes me a fanboy, then fine, but I'd still rather use multiple discs, than more space on the HDD.

I didn't know there were mandatory multiple install games on the PS3! Wow, take a few seconds to switch discs (OK, 30 secs or maybe even a minute tops once fully loaded) or wait however long the multiple installs are? (I'm guessing not a few seconds?) Gee, let me think...

Gamersyde likes to include all platform the game is assumed to be released on (sometimes) not just the one its officially going to. As of right now, the 360 is the only platform the game has been announced for release, and as such should be considered a 360 exclusive.

Today Square-Enix released a statement regarding the platform. They clearly say that at this time there are no plans for a PS3 version.
Source (Japanese): http://messages.yahoo.co.jp/bbs?.mm=FN&action=m&bo...

Tri-Ace never made a real multiplatform game. The only exception is Lenneth which is a remake of the original Valkyrie Profile of the PSOne for the PSP.

Well time may change and so may Tri-Ace but if there is port than it will be a lot later…

Id take the load times(although even with the installs many PS3 titles are just on par with 360 in terms of loading)
.
That' right, all these installations on PS3 are mainly for compensating low blu-ray speed (9mb/sec - just terrible!) but who knows - the Uncharted runs without installation and only with one base loading. And the 4gb data on HDD... that's in the past, now the developers are more familiar with PS3 hardware

itaintrite no offence but it have basically zero to do with Battlestar Galactica, maybe you didn't know but there is far more Scifi out there then that.

If there is an Scifi Star Ocean is based the most of it's Star trek, but thats still quite miles away, Star Ocean just reuse the words and tenoology they came up with, like teleporter, warp drive and so fort, Why invent the wheel again when there is already some standard word for it :P

Yeah, and Battlestar Galactica is humans from Caprica looking for Earth so it's backwards. This is probably more like Titan A.E. but I haven't seen it for years so I can't remember the exact story.

in-engine and real-time (or in-game) are a bit different, in-game means the visuals displayed are seen during actual gameplay, where as in-engine just means the visuals displayed are created using the game's engine (being produced by the xbox 360 itself) as opposed to a CG or pre-rendered VIDEO, wich can look as goos as it wants, since its a video (could be video of real life for example)

these screens are a good example http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/903/903309/imgs...

all except for the very last one is using the game engine, meaning they are being produced by the xbox 360 itself.
