Last I checked this game's got just as much spikey hair and belt buckles as any JRPG and THAT'S why it's generic.

And I did just go back and look at some FFX screenshots. Damn that game still looks nice even by today's standards. I take it back alright. FFX in high resolution would blow this game out of the water.

Ha ha ha ha aha ha ha... Worst stealth grahics on a game ever.
looked so good on footage & video.

Why did i ever bought the bonus DVD version ( much more expensive tha the platinum), the frickin low-res textures, the utter horrible lip-synch and ALL THE TIME jumpy animation.
A fine Piece of crap game technically.
Some nice vistas, though.

Really? Who?

Next you can explain how the outfits are generic when they pull more from mythos than the standard FF suit with buckles fare. At least these outfits are elaborate in the right way.

This game is probobly the LEAST generic JRPG for a while, why? Because it's being made with mostly the focus of western gamers. How do I know that? Sure they prommesed not a so static world, where you can affect it and some actions will give different outcomes and you need to deal with it acordingly, aka what most western gamers is screaming of.

For me this game is one of the most interesting titles this year and SO4 the next :)

Graphically it looks also very very stunning, I'm not so sure what other games you compare to but this looks really good? What part of it does look so bad? I don't understand this at all.

I never said it was a technical marvel, only that the art direction was ahead of its time and still shames most JRPGS to this date. Graphics aren't just about the engine running it or the power of the GPU. It's about visually arresting design and compelling art direction. FFX had it 7 years ago (and a bunch of other games, too). This doesn't have it now.

The argument, which wasn't put forth by me to begin with, was that the game doesn't have spikey hair and belt buckles. Well, I see in every character screenshot and artwork an abundance of spiked hair and a good number of belts. And the design is generic due to those two factors PLUS the fact that none of it is interesting. The screens show a big guy in a wife beater with a giant axe, and belt buckles. *Yaaawn*. And don't even get me started on the plain-Jane main character.

What's so hard to understand? I look at the images, and personally I don't care for the art direction. Everything's blocky and the architecture is derivitive. The game doesn't look like it has a single thread of original style running through it. The videos also show that the game doesn't look any better (and usually worse) in motion, using an animation system that seems like it was copied and pasted from a PS2 JRPG.

So basically the only generic thing is the belt buckles, I think you would make anything seem generic only because you don't like the art and design of the characters,

Sounds to me that you don't like the JRPG genre at all, much of what you dislike about the art style in this or any JRPG are common place (generic), its what we have come to expect from the genre.

Your arguement is like wanting to watch an Anime only to be annoyed that the characters have big eyes, brightly coloured hair and females with large breasts.

I still like it.
The design might not be exceptional but that’s to expect of a game that is loosely going along with a fantasy medieval setting and architecture from Europe which we’ve seen quite a few times by now.
I think it is rock solid, except these two kids who might be a bit more creative but ugly.

I wouldn’t worry about art and graphics, it’s looking good enough, but about gameplay mechanisms, characters and story.

I don’t like this comparison at all. There are various types of Animes. It’s no genre. It just means that it is an animated movie.
You can actually be annoyed by the art style even if you like story and characters because there are various art styles and they do not have to meet your preferences. Saying that all Animes look alike is ignorant.

And how is that any different to a game ?

Saying that all Animes look alike is ignorant.
And I never said that, geesssh, obviously you didn't understand the point I was trying to make at all.

Let me be more simple, Why even complain about a JRPG's art style when you know that the chances of it being generic are going to be high, obviously the word generic being used to discribe something that is similar to provious games art style.

JRPG's art is derived from manga, anime and japanese culture after all.

And I never said all animes look alike but there is no denying that many of them have similar art styles and cliches.

That would be incorrect. He obviously doesn't like 360 exclusive JRPGs.

And the design is generic due to those two factors PLUS the fact that none of it is interesting.
Tip: if you don't like the design it doesn't mean it's generic. And if no games had belts or buckles how would characters keep their pants up! You're just attacking the style because of your hate for the game. Because there is much better and much worse, and I don't think the word generic is what you think it means.

Everything's blocky and the architecture is derivitive.
Now this I might be able to stand behind. Architecture is a mix of the faux-Roman-Grecco style that's been in all tri-Ace games plus your standard RPG countryside. But then architecture this generation hasn't impressed me much outside of LO.

The 'blockyness' is clearly from earlier builds, since it's not present in all the shots. Once they turn on the final post-processing filters, those should look nicely. It was the same with VP2.
