Xbox 360 PS3

The Game Convention is almost over on Gamersyde, and I think it's interesting to do a direct comparison of two of the most popular games there: Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and Fifa 09. So I encoded two full videos at 60 fps so you guys can compare both games with the best quality possible. Be aware that the stream will still run at 30 fps though, so you'll have to download the video (in whatever format you want) to see it running at full speed.

According the metacritic scores, Fifa 08 was a better game than PES 2008, which, let's be honest, was complete turd. You stated that PES 2008 was awful, yet no Fifa has been better? A tad contradicting in your opinions.
There's no contradiction there. PES 2008 was awful because of its lag and lack of features. The gameplay was a step back from PES 2007 but even then, FIFA 2008 gameplay was worse but it was an improvement from FIFA 2007 which was atrocious.
I think it's widely acknowledged from both parties, that Fifa 08 was the better game last year. You deem it impossible to control, I disagree. It had response issues, but still played the more faithful representation to the real sport than what the ridiculously arcady PES 2008 ever did.
FIFA 2008 was the better game last year but not because of gameplay but because of features. Many people acknowledged that considering PES lost its strongest virtue: Gameplay and you didn't have much more else to look at. Even the framerate was ridiculously bad. This is why FIFA 2008 was considered to be a bit better, but not because it played better. Even with all those bugs, PES 2008 was far more enjoyable than FIFA.

As for reality, many people get things wrong when reffering to about reality vs. gameplay. In many games, specially football, realism doesn't necessarily mean better or more fun. To start with, you need to keep in mind that we're playing a 90min game in about 20mins. Starting from that point on, you can't make it loyal to real life and there's where Konami did it better from the first PES to PES 2007. They made their game fast, deep, challenging and responsive, which is all you need to deal with a 20min football game.

As for the animation, I'd have to give you the nod there. FIFA 2009's animations are better in these videos.

On the flip side, there are serious bugs with the goalkeepers (Almost 2 idiotics auto-goals? WTF!) I really hope they fix it before release and we might have an splendid game.

fifa still edging it in terms of graphics..infact the animation on fifa is looking great.

Pes is looking like its back on track though.. might be a case of too little too late for many...especially given fifa will be using updated info constantly. Also.. the loading times on Pes seem waaaay too long.

As a loyal PES fan(boy) since ISS on the SNES, I must say FIFA 08 was the better game (in both visual and gameplay). PES 2008 felt OLD and totally out-of-date. It did NOT introduce any real new gameplay feature. Graphics was ok at best (hello slowdowns).

FIFA08 on the other hand brought in "new" innovations (manually passing etc). Visually, it's technically better (smoother, more detailed character models, though I still don't like how fugly and bulky they look). Sure, the gameplay was still a bit too slow for my taste, but it was still damn fun to play!

I only bought PES2008 to play it with my friends (who, like many others, refuse to play FIFA just because they had a bad impression with fifa...1997 or some crap years ago).

I really HOPE Konami can up their game this year. Cause EA have.

ps: as for the loading times comment above... considering that each match lasts at least 10-15 mins, even a 1-min wait is nothing :) More time to go grab a snack.

Everybody perfered Pes last generation for sure.. but i personaly know nobody that perfers it this generation over fifa..cause lets face it, both Pro evo's this gen have been broken. Which is why this version has alot to prove.. where as last gen Pes had nothing to prove.

pes 2009's really good, I think you haven't played japanese games before. gameplay in japanese games always great. what I need in pes 2008 really in this version, I see that. fifa 09 is really beautiful and fresh but I feel that fifa still don't have a good gameplay, I can't see anything better in this version except graphic
This post just drove me nuts. What are you even talking about? Of course I play Japanese games. Have done since I was about 4 for fucks sakes. Modern day Japanese companies are just years behind western game devs now in terms of engine development and new tech. This is just a fact that has been evident for some years now. Another thing that drives me insane is people consistently saying that Fifa doesn't have good gameplay based on previous installments. If you even had a clue about real football, and how it looks and plays, then you'd understand that by looking at the two videos which one is representing the sport in the best possible way just by looking at them. Fifa 09 is blowing the doors and hinges clean off PES now as far as simulating how the sport actually is. PES just looks simply ridiculous compared to it. All Fifa needed to do was improve the responsiveness to get an awesome feeling and looking game. They've done this. It's curtains for PES, now. There is just no way around that fact. Next year EA will push their brand new engine even further by adding even more details, while PES will only just be getting out of the traps. It's fucked.

Fifa looks stunning in this video. I see nothing new in PES, other than the menus. Man I still dream of PES Gameplay with Fifa presentation, visuals AND license... ahh what a dream :) too bad it will never happen...

Anyways, I used to be a massive PES/ISS fan, never would have touched Fifa, untill my disappointment with PES2007. So EA being my previous employer I decided to try out Fifa08, and now I'm sold. The license, visuals, presentation and quality of online features makes PES look like a cheap arcade game now. Sure I would say PES has much nicer and smoother game play, but Fifa is now just much more complete experience I am looking for as a gamer, and football enthusiast. Fifa09 for the win :) (sorry Seabass)

BUGS: I have noticed some bugs in FIFA gameplay. The goalkeepers pretty much suck. One of them almost commited an auto goal when trying to catch an easy ball. Then the other let it slip from a pass from the defense almost striking another auto-goal and the only goal in the match was stoppable in my opinion.
The first goal keeper mistake was abysmal and annoying but the second one made sense....looks like the person controlling pressed the dummy move to let the ball thru the legs...

I thought the same. This is France's new away kit, and Spain's new yellow/gold away kit. The players simply selected them. Nothing more to it than that.

I don't think so, last year like many of you i bought Fifa instead of PES for the first time but the responsiveness ruined the game even the beautiful dribbling system was completely useless.

Now from this new video of Fifa 09 it looks the same, yes its a bit faster but in a 10 minutes video i do not see anyone able to play passes in small spaces or a decent dribble. They loose too many balls "waiting the player"

And thats not down to a poor player? There was plenty of little 'dinks' to avoid tackles etc shown in the video, which shows that responsiveness is improved. Not only that, the players are making no attempt to move towards a pass at times - which is even possible on FIFA 08 and is a very common 'error' by poor players who would rather wait for the ball to arrive.

PES was always the most realistic, and perhaps it's not now, but I like the faster pace, the more responsive players, the perfectly timed through ball, the gloriously different every time goal. It's still realistic, perhaps with more of a nod to keeping it fun and making you feel like a super star where Fifa concentrates on the grind of a real game, but can feel like a slog. Sometimes it's nice to get the ball to Kaka, take it past 3 players and score a blinder to set up a nice through ball to one of the fwds. PES always gives you that adrenalin rush, and it's cleaner graphics may not have the Fifa bling and EA filtering, but for me it always has looked better for it. I may change my mind, but right now I'm thinking of defecting back to PES again.

Well said, guys! That's what it's all about. I can play fifa with some of the friends that only play that game, but the REAL fun is had when playing WE/PES. Realism is good, and that's what the REAL game is there for. Get some fresh air you sim heads.

Plus, fifa graphics aren't done right. The post processing blurring effect is not good looking.

I loved the PES series and played every part to death...until PES5 and since then I have been struggling to like the game anymore. FIFA on the other hand has its shortcomings as well but no one can deny that EA has really been going for a next-gen approach for the FIFA series since the new consoles were released. It looks gorgeous and high-class, the animations are top-notch even if they don´t always blend together perfectly, it has all the licenses, it has tons of features, it has a realistic manager mode which I take over this PES league mode any day and it has a near-perfect online mode.

I think Konami really needs to redo the whole game. It´s obvious they are still working on the old engine which really started to show age and it will get not better from here.

You can see what i meant about 8.10 in the fifa video, nobody seems able to dribble a defender, during a counterattack your only choice in fifa 08 (and to me 09 looks the same) its a trough pass.

Then of course there is some dribbling in fifa but it looks a lot like 08 where the only effective way to dribble was turning 90° like a turtle.

In the end the response still looks too slow to me, i hope who is playing in the video its no good at fifa or he is just playing the game like 08, we'll see in the demo

On the other hand in pes despite the awful animations i see a lot of situation in tight spaces where they still pass and dribble.

I think all the crap EA has gotten over them has actually done some good. They're really upping the ante with their known franchises and new IP's.

All they need to do is to apply the same with the NFS series and I'm a happy chap!

Ontopic: Fifa looks pretty cool. I don't often play football games, but I do enjoy playing a game or two once in a while. Fifa seems the way to go nowadays!
