Xbox 360

At first announced as a Microsoft published title, Infinite Undiscovery will in the end be released this week, or even today, by Square-Enix. As usual I rushed to record the first 10 minutes of the game, and since this game is a RPG, and a quite complex one at that, many more will follow.
Update: Added 2 more videos. Another will follow this afternoon, and one last tonight or tomorrow.
Update 2: Last video for today added, more tomorrow!

In my experience, Japanese voices are usually just as bad, if not worse. They're always very stereotypical, and very annoying. Yes, English dubs are sometimes terrible, but it doesn't mean the other languages are any better.

Look at games like Final Fantasy X, XII, Lost Odyssey and even Metal Gear Solid. The English voice work is brilliant, but the Japanese stuff lacks any kind of emotion or even effort.
Exactly, the difference here is that english speaking people can't tell if a Japanese dub is bad, I watch anime all the time and still can't tell when there is bad voice acting, I think people just think its cool to have Japanese subs for the Japanophile factor "Omg I can't understand it, so it must be cool"

It's kind of odd really when I watch Anime I always watch JP dubs, but as for computer games I would rather have english dubs, all that reading would make my head explode, plus its hard to concentrate on onscreen action when you are focusing on text.

@ WinterSnowblind )

you are kidding right? the english VA for FF XII is terrible beyond believe and the one for X not that much better either (but atleast it was bearable), while the japanese versions are just sugoi (superb)

@ Jollipop )

to me as a native german speaker the english voices, which are used to dub anime/japanese games, usually sound unfitting to the characters, especially for women/girls - the males mostly are ok and some good, like David Hayter/Solid Snake, but in FF XII they were emotionless robots

the japanese voices (for anime/japanese games) nearly always seem spot on to me

for movies the english voices mostly are fine/great for me, sometimes I prefer them to the (mostly good) german dubs

I can't believe they don't have english voices for some of the scenes. The first video's ending didn't have any at all!

As i said, the understanding of the language puts me out of the equation. I agree that a lot of people prefer original voice acting for "coolness" reasons, but many i know just like the japanese style of acting more.
It isn't true that if you listen to japanese you don't know what they are saying, subs are there for that. The conveying of emotions is given by "how" something is said. The meaning is lost if you can't understand, but again not if subs are there.

A fact is that when you listen to something you don't undestand AND you don't have subs, what you don't understand is automatically replaced by something you think would be best for your interpretation. This is a reason why some people like to watch RAW foreigner material.

I agree that it can be annoying following subs during interactive sequences.

As for me, i find japanese VA vastly superior most of the times.

@ blimblim: what's the level up/character progression system like? are there skill points to be allotted? are character stats automatically increased? are new combos and special moves unlocked by leveling up?

thanks for uploading these videos. i'm not quite sure about purchasing this game but seeing the combat system in action and learning about some of the complexities of the combat is pushing me towards a buy

All the most importance scenes appear to be voiced. I don't mind scenes where a character is explaining game mechanics to you not being voiced. Even if Tri-Ace did go out of their way to make such situations look more elaborate than normal by going through the work of animating the cutscene the way they did.

Sure but the Japanese language has a completely different tone in the way they emphasise words, something english speaking people don't do so much, although Australians do to some extent.

If you listen to the way not only Japanese but Chinese aswell speak they use a lot more variation in their tone when they speak.

English is just a pretty boring sounding language I think, although as an english native speaker its hard to know how english sounds to non english speaking people...

Japanese do like to use english words quite a lot though, so I duno.

The voice acting seems fine to me, although a tad irritating. Combat looked cool, as did the graphics. A possible buy, if not a rental.

I find English dubs are often done pretty poorly, and the acting is typically at least a bit worse than the Japanese versions. I can understand some Japanese, but it's more in the emotion and expression. A lot of English game voice actors often seem to be just reading the lines, or get the emotional context of the lines completely wrong.

I think there's also the factor that Japan often gets higher tier voice actors for games, and that voice actors in Japan are generally more well known and respected. Other than a handful of games in the US this isn't true. I don't know if Japan has a SAG-equivalent, but that also raises prices for voice actors in the US.

Something about actually getting to see the kids run up to the house just fascinates me :P

Normally characters would teleport to their next location and you find them, but actually seeing them run and following them like that is pretty cool.

Stuff seems to be mostly voiced until some in-game character mentions one of the game mechanics (cooking) and then it's non-voiced. Either they simply didn't have the time or it's as intended, but they still wanted some non-important dialogue to still look nicely presented, but from what I've seen so far, it's usually centered around some game mechanic or a hint that will lead to the explanation of one.

I like what i'm seeing, i don't understand how reviewers are talking negative about the graphics, nope...those environments dont look mind blowing but they look good enough and the characters in the cutscenes look REALLY cool. Surprisingly enough the voices don't really annoy me much at all in those cutscenes....i was afraid they would be horrible, but they seem alright actually. If i buy the game though, i will disable the battles voices, cause i don't wanna hear that stuff all the the time...that IS annoying.

The videos I'll put online tomorrow show quite a bit more of the game, with some actual battles and stuff going on. Also that "dungeon" looks quite a bit better than the first few ones, especially the lighting.

This game looks ok, it feels kind of strange seeing them talk in most of the video with no voices coming out. But I guess I'm just spoiled by Mass Effect putting voice acting into every little thing in the game.

I watched the first video and I dunno, it just feels a bit of a poor effort. The character designs are cute, but that's about it. It just seemed exactly like a PS2 game with upgraded graphics, and not even that upgraded (apart from the cutscenes).

I guess I'll get flamed for not understanding JRPGs but the design of the game seems to be completely old school in a bad way.

Well, I prefer excellent english dubs over japanese voices; however, japanese voices are better then shitty english dubs.

She uses a bow in gameplay, so why the fuck she stays like that in cutscenes, like she has a invisible bow? It's just a so... freakin' obvious bug, it freaks my immersion perception. Do Not Want!
shes not suppose to have a bow in her hand...!
she probably forgot the bow after she fought the ork

the voices sound very dated to me, like PSone era when voice acting wasnt really that big of a deal. but then i find a lot of JRPG's have that problem. but at the end of the day, i'd rather listen to some hokey dialogue then read endless amounts of text. this game looks pretty good tho, looking forward to renting it.

Meant I'm having a blast with tales of vesperia currently and so I naturally can't wait to get my hands on this game.

Best to not always believe what you read. The best way to go is always on your own gut. Watch the game in action to see if you like what you see. If you can't get a remote liking or interest in what you're seeing, then it probably isn't for you,

That opening cutscene was a whole heck of a lot better than I was expecting it would be, especially from a sound design perspective. Voice acting seems pretty good as well.

Graphically I think it looks fantastic. The art is definitely there and the lighting and textures are subtle, but still look great imo.
i know i know what your saying...
so many people were blasting this game to be generic and awful but from what i seen its gorgeous and doesnt look generic to me...
